This swarm was caught at Garys home in Troy Missouri. It was later move to a site in St Charles Missouri. The swarm trap was built using Dr. Leo Sharashkin at HorizontalHive.com. Thanks also goes to Doug at "Off Grid with Doug and Stacy", for their encouragement and info I received at the www.homesteadinglifeconference.com in 2018

You were looking for the queen and I happen to see her right on the first frame you pulled out. In the bottom left corner where you see the clustered bees which appeared to be drawing out comb, she is right in the top of the cluster walking down. I saw her at 1.03 and 1.04 then the camera moved up :) just noticed her because she was slightly different color and smoother. Obviously you didn’t need to find her if you have eggs, just wanted you to know you caught her on film after all.

This is an awesome video. I have been Lanstroth for decades and going to be trying out a Layens next year. Will just say this. Dont worry about the comb being cock eyed at the bottom. They will eventually fill the frame. Often they will build in an upside down triangle shape that gets wider and wider until the frame is full.

Hi, Nice video. The reason the bees are fanning their wings on the top frame at around 14:15 is because they are releasing phermone to help the rest of the colony locate the new nest location. Perfectly normal when you disturb the colony while working with them. The tails are up and the fanning wings release the smell of the colony. The bees are paying no attention to you. This is different than the behavior of an established hive when you are working the frames sometimes the bees come up to the top like that and stand with their wings spread and watch you. This is defensive behavior and you need to check it with smoke to keep them from attacking you. Their tails are not up in the air as well.

Listen to your boxes as you move frames over if you can't find the queen, when she is not with them they really fan, the box that is quite has the queen in it.

What you thought was a Queen was actually a Drone a Queen is bigger and more Tapered toward the rear so she can get it into the comb and lay an egg.

I said the same before reading the comments. The best indication of no queen is that fact that there are no larva for the amount of honey.

I caught 2 swarms this year. I am still learning and am a bit unsure what to look for. There is nothing like jumping in with both feet and trying to swim. I will do a full inspection of both my hives in the spring. Thanks

Hi, could I ask you a question? Where did you position the brood frames in relation to the entrance holes? It is important to keep the centre of the brood over the entrance if possible, as the bees will re-order the hive to place the brood nearest the entrance. Don't worry too much about the queen, if there are eggs and larvae in the combs then she is there. The other way to tell if the colony is healthy is checking the field bees as they come back for pollen, loads of pollen equals brood!

That was a drone. The queen would have more of an oblong bottom. You had no larva for the amount of honey which means there is no queen. Also, you should have a slight gap between your frames with a solid lid on top. This will prevent killing bees when you smash the frames together and make it easier to remove them. Your frames are built backwards. You should not have the tops as wide and so much gap under the tops.

I am a new bee keeper and posted the video for a record of the first two swarms. I built these hives using plans from horizontalhive.com this is. the link horizontalhive.com/how-to-build/hive-frame-swarm-trap.shtml. They are Laynes Hives. Thanks for you comment.

@@greenpartsusa5157 I know the website. If you go back and look at the plans, you will see the frames have a slight gap between them. Above the frames is a top made of separating slats that do come together to seal the bees from getting to the lid. The purpose of the top being in slats is to prevent having to open the entire beehive at once. You can remove a few slats to look at the frames underneath without bothering the entire bee hive.

I noticed that you have a screen board on your 30 frame Layens hive. Do you have trays below the screens to catch Hive Beetles? If some do you have anymore pic or plans of the bottom board.

Hello Gary. I have a question for you. Do you find that honeybees prefer longer frames to work on? Like those in your Layens hive? I had an idea of glueing one of my deep and shallow boxes together and doing the same for the frames to create a longer frame. What do you think of this idea?

I’m a new beekeeper and am starting with the layens hive. I’ve just caught my first swarm and am just waiting for it to build up. I watched your video to see how to do the transfer. I have a question about the wired frames. Do you need to put some type of starter strip in it or can you just put it in per Leo’s plans? I’ve incorporated wax foundation into mine and melted it on with a 12v power supply but I see that you/he in the video put one in without anything. This is @3:40, it’s fast and now that I see it again there may be the slightest strip. However, just using wires can’t be a thing?
@kade426

I use wires for support and popsicle sticks coated in wax for a starter strip. The bees draw it faster.

Hey, have a question for you. I have two langstroth boxes, a deep and a shallow. Could I essentially glue all that together, including the frames, and make my own layens hive? Also, do you find that middle bar on the frames impedes the bees from going down further on the frames? Thanks you

The sticks give the frame strength, I'm a new beekeeper and wanted to try both. I do have a extractor but these frames are too big, so thinking I will have to cut the comb out and crush and strain. I didn't remove any honey last year. I plan to take whats left in the spring and let you know. Thanks

I don't understand why people that don't use the standard Langsthroth hive always work so hard to show how much better their unconventional hive is. The way I see it the Layens hive stay mostly empty, lots of wasted space. I have not yet seen any advantage of the Layens hive standard over the Langsthroth hive. I don't see a single commercial beekeeper using Layens hive. Commercial beekeepers are in for the money and if the Layens hive gave them an advantage they would certainly be using it. It seems to me that the people that promotes the Layens hive over the standard Langsthroth hive are exploiting the inexperienced beekeeper. BTW, how do you add a honey super on the Layens hive
@philipe.9738
@philipe.9738 Жыл бұрын
We chose to go with a Layens style hive because it's less intrusive on the bees, no 75lb supers to lift and move about, are relatively low maintenance with some only opening their hives once a year, and can be set up to be better insulated (ours are 2.5" with RockWool in the walls and 3.5" in the roof). Once they are up and running there is no need to medicate the bees. A strong colony knows how to take care of themselves and any pests. Oh, and the bees get pretty comfortable with us working around them so no need for a bee suit for most anything we'd need to do.

Painful to watch.... bees will take every opportunity to vex you but please DON'T smoke them so much all bees should be in the hive or encouraged to use the entrance. Not the floating around in the dead space beyond the board. If you had left the swarm trap to the side of the hive with the top closed they would have made it inside on their own as the others will fan the pheromone around the area advertizing the colony to stragglers. Good luck

Brent, exactly how many years have you been keeping bees? I commented on what I saw, as a full time beekeeper of too many years I thought the KZbin mantra was to comment in a constructive way. Being abusive is never constructive, neither will it help to make contacts in the industry.
