There’s no doubt that prescribed fire is good for wildlife habitat, but what’s the best time of year to burn? What are the pros and cons of burning during the dormant season (winter) and the growing season (spring and summer)? In this episode Bronson and Steve visit with MSU Deer Lab graduate student Luke Resop and discuss the findings from his research where he examined the response of vegetation to dormant and growing season fire. Which is the best? You guessed it…IT DEPENDS.
Check out the MSU Deer Lab’s online seminar series (here) and choose the Natural Resources option from the Categories drop down menu. You will have to create an account to view the seminars. The seminars are free unless you are seeking professional educational credits.

I watched your Interview on the Exodus channel Dr. Bronson, Lots of great info there too. I think the moon phase Die Hards, just need to that beat to death horse down. The lack of moon phase impact on deer breeding & activity is in the Bag!!

Also interesting as far as deer habitat, hear in the u.p. of Michigan they're continually logging off the cedar, which is the cover & wintering food for the dear while they don't select burn for cedar seed stratification prior to cutting. It's only a renewable recourse in you know how to renew it before killing it.😉

You Guys are Great, you should do a big reform study for the Great Plains, How do you rebuild the great plains after killing the largest manure, blood & bone meal spreading rototiller in history, 30,000,000+ Buffalo? Interesting research you cover, I don't know about in the south, but there's lots to be covered about stratification by fire up here in cedar country. Loggers need to learn to select burn cedar cuts in fall to pre seed the cedar pre cut. Look at the peshtigo fire map compared to the boom in cedar logging, its a nice match up.

Starting fires is a dangerous business. You are liable for damage to other property and structures. CRP areas cannot be burned after April 1 (nesting season in my area). I hire for the day a person certified to conduct prescribed fire. Wind, humidity is very important. I get volunteer s with ATVs and water sprayers and shovels to control flame escapes. Burning near harvested corn fields is very difficult due the the large amount of stover left. I mow and disc fire breaks the year prior. We notify the neighbors and the local sheriff and fire department. Usually after 1pm the winds picks up we must stop. It's a long day to burn habitat. I'm glad when its over. My certified burner usually says' "Well, how much did we run today?"
