There are tutorials on youtube that explain how to do standing stitches. They are used instead of chains to make the finished piece look neater.

To do a standing stitch, instead of chaining, you pull out your loop until its the height of the stitch you want (in your case it was treble/triple crochets) and using the loop to yarn over instead of grabing new yarn. I would recomend a tutorial to explain more thoroughly.
