It’s exciting that you are hiking the AT. It saddens me that you have called out a whole race of people due to the actions of a few. How would you feel if I judged you poorly because I had a bad experience in your hometown of Philadelphia, or another large Northern city? There are bad people among all races, but I want to believe that most people have kind hearts and love all humanity. Good luck as you continue your hike.
@TrailheadJustin2 жыл бұрын
Black people have historically been judged poorly, so your point is lost there. I called out what I’ve been seeing from the folks who have been exhibiting those behaviors. I knew it wouldn’t go over well with everyone, and I made sure to address everyone towards the end of my rant, but I’m always going to express how I feel in the moment, respectfully.

How ignorant can you be? Just gonna totally ignore the part he said if you’re not a white male THE MESSAGE STILL APPLIES? too many old white guys who never learned LNT or basic trail etiquette ruining it for everybody. Re entitled white male hetero hikers in the shelters, I would say that the male hetero part describes most thru-hikers, so any generalization is going to impact that population. My experience is that people are just clueless in terms of proper shelter etiquette. I’ve seen people pitch tents in shelters and claim no more space. People also like personal space from a front-country perspective, especially when they’re dry and wet hikers will be coming. In situations like you were in, I come in like a ridge runner. Grab the shelter sweeper, announce that bad weather is coming and it’s going to be a packed house tonight. Then say I’m cleaning the sleeping area so when all the wet hikers come in they don’t turn all the dirt to mud, asking the people to move their gear into small areas. Once I’ve finished sweeping, I just say there will be a dry area for hikers who are there before the storm, and a wet area for the hikers coming in wet. Everyone always is appreciative and moves to my appointed dry area, and then I just put my stuff closest to the wet area. I’ve already taken control, so there’s no issue saying there’s a lot of hikers coming in, and asking people to move a little tighter. Not doubting your experience. Peach your truth. I just think sometimes a little diplomacy can fix unpleasant situations as they’re developing.

@@TrailheadJustin but for those of us who are white, and have supported you, it was a bit it a slap in the face. Rudeness is not limited to one specific group of people. There is good and bad in every person. The sad thing is, that as we allow society to further divide us into opposing categories instead of treating each of us as individuals, things will not get better. I have enjoyed watching your hike, but that segment hurt my heart. We are all humans, not groups to be cataloged & stereotyped. I wish you will on the rest of your hike, our trail will part ways here. I have no room in my heart for hate. I wish you well.

@@PS_1904 As it turns out, the only individuals who I’ve witnessed exhibiting that behavior have been white men, so that’s who I chose to speak to.
