Hello, I'm Seth, and welcome to episode 1 of our series on how to build a tiny home. In this first episode, we’re going to dive into an essential subject: tools-and more importantly, tool safety.
In this episode, we’re going to cover 12 essential power tools that we use regularly in the construction of a tiny house. Don’t worry-we won’t be discussing specialty tools for drywall, plumbing, or electrical work just yet. We’ll save that for another episode. Today, it's all about the tools you’ll need for the main construction of your tiny house.
For each tool, I’ll assign two ratings:
Necessity rating-how essential the tool is when you build a tiny home.
Danger level rating-how dangerous the tool is on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the most dangerous.
Tool Safety: The Basics
There are three critical things to remember when it comes to staying safe:
1. Experience
If you’re new to using power tools, I highly recommend practicing on smaller projects before attempting to build a tiny home.
2. Fatigue
In construction, there’s a saying about the "5:00 fluff-up." Most injuries happen near the end of the workday when people are tired and their focus slips. If you’re feeling worn out, step back and rest.
3. Rushing
Rushing is a recipe for disaster. Take your time and don’t cut corners. When you rush through tasks, the likelihood of accidents increases.
Also, make sure you invest in good-quality tools. They last longer, work better, and will save you money in the long run. Sharp tools are safer, so always keep your tools in good condition. If a blade starts to dull, it’s more likely to cause an accident because it requires more force to cut through the material.
Alright, let’s dive into the tools. These are the 12 power tools we use the most when building a tiny home:
1. Circular Saw
This tool is incredibly versatile and one of the first tools I recommend when you're ready to build a tiny home.
Necessity: 9/10
A circular saw is perfect for cutting plywood, dimensional lumber, and even some metals (with the right blade). It’s great for making quick, straight cuts.
Danger Level: 7/10
Circular saws can be dangerous if not used properly. Always use the safety guard, adjust the blade depth, and make sure the material is supported to avoid kickback.
2. Framing Nailer
The framing nailer is essential for speeding up your framing process.
Necessity: 9/10
When you're building a tiny home, driving nails by hand with a hammer would take forever. A framing nailer allows you to do the job much more quickly and efficiently.
Danger Level: 7/10
Since you're firing nails, it’s important to keep your hands and other body parts away from the firing point. Always be mindful of the tool's direction.
3. Table Saw
3. A table saw
is key for making precise cuts, especially when working with plywood or dimensional lumber.
Necessity: 8/10
For fine-tuned cuts when you’re building a tiny home, this is the tool you’ll need. It’s perfect for ripping large sheets of plywood or making straight cuts with great accuracy.
Danger Level: 10/10
Table saws are one of the most dangerous tools because of their exposed rotating blade. Always use a push stick for shortcuts and keep your hands well away from the blade.
4. Cordless Drill and Impact Driver Combo
The combo of a drill and impact driver is a must-have for building a tiny home.
Necessity: 9/10
You’ll use these tools for everything from drilling holes to driving screws. They’re great for assembly and other tasks.
Danger Level: 4/10 (Drill), 6/10 (Impact Driver)
Both tools can cause wrist strain or injury if not used properly, but they’re relatively safe when handled with care.
5. Chop Saw (Miter Saw)
A chop saw is indispensable for making accurate crosscuts, especially when working with trim or framing materials.
Necessity: 8/10
You’ll use it for precise angle cuts and crosscuts when framing and finishing your tiny house.
Danger Level: 6/10
Make sure to clamp your materials down to avoid the blade binding, and always keep your hands clear.
Whether you’re cutting, drilling, or nailing, the tools you use are crucial for the success of your project.
