Not usually the kinda stuff I listen to now, but I was 10 when Hybrid Theory came out, so it was nostalgic. The lyrics were hitting home on the worst relationship of my life to the point where I had to laugh. And then came the lines "You hate yourself, I hate you more. All the anger, I can't seem to let it go." and I was just like "YES!" I know that feeling so damned well, man. Ever just had someone you cared about even more than you cared about yourself and wanted only to be there for just completely exhaust you of all pity and compassion? Something in you says you should feel bad for them... try to be the better person... but then you read Dante's Inferno and remember what level of hell they fit into. The stories I could tell you about that girl. I've never met someone with bigger problems and less accountability. It's almost wrong to say she's a bad person, so much as she is so willfully stupid and irresponsible when it comes to the effect she has on other people that she's become delusional to the point where she truly doesn't see it in herself. Because to do that she'd have to acknowledge her own deep self-hatred. Instead, she steps outside of it, leaving it out in the world for the people closest to her to trip over. And somehow she's convinced herself that has nothing to do with her... like it's just another unfortunate situation. Her mother or her child could die tomorrow and on some level she would be sad, but on another level, she'd be glad to be free of all the things she hates about dealing with them (and all of the things she'd then have 'gotten away' with) - all of the things that test her that she has to watch herself fail at because she's so stuck on this whole idea that her life is this grand misfortune, rather than a pile of gross decisions and not a staunchly committed denial of who she actually is and how that looks to literally everyone else. I am dead serious. Who needs morals when you can chalk it all up to luck, right? Blame fate. Blame the world. Blame everyone else. Because as hopeless as that attitude is, it's easier to digest than the idea that you yourself are the reason why you keep winding-up in such perfect positions to absolutely devastate lives. I wanted revenge for so long - it ran deep and for a lot of it, I held it against myself that I'd even consider going after anyone... but it seemed like as soon as I was totally out of the picture she did a good job of running her whole life into the ground in a way where nobody could not know. What a year she had! And here's me, life's better than ever and I have things as a person that I NEVER had before. It's almost enough to make me believe in divine forces. People say karma is a bitch, but I dunno I think she's pretty great, you just gotta know how to talk to her. :P Probably always hate her, and in a weird way I'm okay with it, haha. I don't know how to put it. It takes a lot for me to consider that a person may just be beyond redemption, but in this case, that hatred... and just, all of the damage I had to sift through, motivated me not to hurt people, or myself, but instead to simply be everything that person would never ever be. Sometimes you can hate someone and still be in the light and be a better person, and it doesn't feel like a burden anymore. The burden is dealing with it and not knowing or accepting that maybe they deserve to be hated by you - instead you turn it on yourself and it just keeps you in a dark place. All I had to do was let it go. Accept that I truly do hate her with everything I have, that there are unavoidable reasons for that, and just move on. Try to work with it, because like or not a piece of you has died and this is the replacement. Most people who know us both now say she fucked up with me big time and all I can do is smile and say "Well, nothing I can do about that now." I can't even say a single mean thing about her. It's like there's no desire to, even though I know exactly how I feel about the kind of person she is. The thing is... I don't have to make it known. It's obvious how I feel about her as a person when you compare the choices we make, and how we deal with other people. I know she's gotta know it too. I know she knows I'm in a better place and that I was always a better person than she ever tried to learn how to be. She wouldn't have tried crawling back otherwise. The only thing she neglected to realize was that I've actually grown, because even then I was onto things about life that she has no concept of. I leave the disdain where it is, again, as a reminder of all of the things I will never be and all of the darkness I got away from. Not all negative feelings are bad. Sometimes they serve a purpose. Sometimes there are good reasons for having a deep aversion to a person. I learned a great lesson there. Because of it I now do a much better job of giving more of myself to the people who appreciate me and less to the ones who don't, and for the most part the outcomes have been beyond imagination. To me, that's what this song is all about. It's a difficult emotion to pin down, but he really nailed it.
