I think a big difference is that religion is considered a personal thing in Europe, none of someone else's business, while in the USA, it's more of a collective thing that binds communities. So I can see how more people are religious in the USA. A question like "what church do you go to?" is not asked in Europe (to my knowledge).
@lu_shulmu3 жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone in Europe bats an eye at religious iconography in a stage performance (or any other art form, for that matter). I've only learnt from Americans reacting this way that they are very sensitive to the depiction of religious themes (or rather Christian ones, don't think they feel the same way about e.g. Hindu iconography in entertainment). Many Europeans find it strange how in the US Christianity is regarded as the default and the role it plays in American politics. European countries are largely secular (with the exception of the Vatican...) and religion is thought of as private. And of course some of the Eurovision participants are majority Muslim countries anyway, like Albania, Turkey and Azerbaijan. This was a good video to react to, although I was missing Ukraine's 2007 entry and international Eurovision treasure Verka Serduchka who got second place that year.

Finland 2006, Lordi, is an established band. They always wear their costumes to any official appearance. Funny thing about that Lordi performance (Finland 2006), that was pretty much the point when pyrotechnics became a thing for Eurovision, but at the same time, they had to take extra break after the performance, because the smoke didn't get off the stage as fast as they had planned; Lordi is still pretty popular, but only two of the band members from Eurovision are still in the band. They have started in 1992, and they never show their real faces publicly, if there's any connection to the band at least; Their real names aren't supposed to be public information, although some magazine leaked them, and got a big law case because of that. Also, the vocalist announced Finland's points in some later show, and they were part of interval act in 2021

I need to comment: 1. The sax guy could only do those moves because he wasn’t really playing the saxophone. He knows how to as that was his study at university. At ESC no live instruments can be played. It’s all backing tracks. 2. Italy with the dancing gorilla was a serious song but made tongue-in-cheek. Read the translation of the song. Also read where he got inspiration for that song Occidentali’s Karma. I’ll be back later for more comments if I feel they need making. 3. I’m back: proposing did happen at ESC, just not on stage. In 2017 the boyfriend of one singer from one of the Balkan nations proposed to her in the green room (the place the artists sit when they are not performing). 4. Sylvia Night was a troll. Read about her and find reaction videos/comments online. 5. In case you didn’t notice, Iceland 2019 was an S&M band whose song was entitled Hatrið Mun Sigra (Hatred Will Prevail). They also held up a flag of Palestine during the reading of the votes. They were fined because no political statement are allowed at the contest. Ok,, that’s all.

An online forum decided to mass vote for him to go to Eurovision to represent us that year and… that happened lmao. It has a ton of pop culture references and I’m sure everyone who was alive in 2008 still knows the dance to this day. Also Italy 2017 is probably one of my favourite ESC entries EVER. Francesco is an amazing performer and the song has super clever lyrics actually! It references a book calle “The Naked Ape”, that’s why there was a monkey on stage. My country Croatia is on the paper mostly catholic, but in practice a lot of us are a bit more laid back although you will find always some individuals who get offended by anything and everything. But the majority of us doesnt freak out when seeing certain stuff regarding religion. In comparison to America we are quite open with that topic and no matter how religious the people in a european country is...the religion cant dictate how the country has to function.

I also think that it is not right to say that all the "crazy" acts were trolls, the countries pick who goes to represent their country and music tastes (as well as cultural backgrounds) vary greatly across Europe. It is also less of a fancy competition and more like fun party vibes and because of that acts that are liked by the public gets sent (so they send the ones they like, not the ones they think others will like most). Hope this makes sense, I am not saying they don't want to win but winning is not all there is to it.

Besides, both songs by Finland were what we're known for, which is metal music. As for someone getting married on stage, Finland did have a song called "Marry me" by Krista Siegfrids (and looking at that performance I can imagine many male viewers actually saying yes) so there's proposal for you. ;) These were some wacky ones throughout the years for sure but even in that timeframe I could have squeezed at least 20 similarly interesting acts in this video. Now let's see how this year will shape up for Eurovision and the promised United States-a-vision if it happens. The latest news I heard tell it should happen. Will eagerly wait to see that one too.

Finland 2008. The singer in that metal band is Jarkko Ahola, now one of Finlands most popular solo artists

Can you react to different countries' Eurovision songs? I'm from Bulgaria & kinda wanted u to see them all, as well as other too. P. S. The one at 6:07 is considered as Bulgaria's worst EV song, soo... P. S. S. Or u should react to 2018 ESC, as in my opinion is one of the best!

You are so right - the song should be interesting to stand out of the crowd. Interesting, however, in this compilation is that there is just a single example of a winner, i.e. the last song.

The entry of the USA into the Eurovision Song Contest is long overdue. We promise not to make fun of (1) the song (2) the performance or (3) the costuming in any way at all no matter how terrible any of these are. Honest!

I know it's not your video (the original one) but I am pissed that Occidentali's Karma is here. Just because it's in Italian many people think the gorilla is a gimmick when actually if you read the lyrics, IT HAS A MEANING! The song talks about theory of evolution and shopping culture. The chorus literally says "la scimmia nuda balla" (the naked monkey dances) referencing the work of Desmond Morris. I wish you could read the lyrics translated and see why the gorilla was there. I loved your reaction, so respectful and open minded!

big difference is the last band is L0RDI, an actual band who entered the competition for free PR but they ended up winning the whole thing ;)

Moldova 2005: Band: Zdob si Zdub Song: Boonika bate Doba They are a folk/punk/rapcore/ska/etc. band and they are not “trying” they are doing their thing. They are actually very well known and loved in both Romania and Moldova. They also came 6th that year. My favorite song of theirs is “Doina Haiducului” (ballad), but to be honest I enjoy almost everything they put out.

DUDE REACT TO ICELAND 2019, BUT LIKE, FULL PERFORMANCE hatari are iconic also i suggest finding their lyrics but not apart from the visuals in short, the story with those goes something like eurovision: we share a message of love and unity iceland: our song is about how we need to unite and leave in peace otherwise the hatred will prevail eurovision: .....

The story of Spain 2008 is simply crazy. A Spanish TV programme made a mock song about Spanish politics, and they presented it to the national contest to see which song goes to Eurivision, also as mockery. People voted them just for fun and they ended up in Eurovision. There are videos of the singer (who's actually just a comedian) begging people NOT TO VOTE them, as they didn't want to go jajajja.

I can only speak for Germany but even my catholic, conservative grandparents don’t mind stuff like that on TV. They think it’s “kinda odd” but are not offended by it. It’s just a show 🤷♀️

The one from Iceland with the woman with the head dress was booed off stage at the end, more due to the comments the performer said about the host country a few days before. Although the 'performer' is a comedy persona rather than the actual person.

Italy 2018 was a song about evolution hence the ape. Italy did well all last decade with two or three minor exceptions. This wasn't one of them.
