Chrysoran22, Would you consider a longform keyboard commentary video, where you discuss the present state of boards, the trends past and present... all the different angles/contexts like switches, form factors,... just kind of the culture of it all, and a looking forward? Because you're a clear enthusiast and I don't recall quite this video idea from you before. Your opinions are given in each video, of course, and you've done longforms about things like _best switches_ and such. I'd love to hear you talk in like a social commentary capacity about the whole of the keyboard enthusiasm past, present and future.

South facing is preferred because cherry profile keycaps have issues when the switch is oriented the other way. This is their "fix" to have shine through rgb legends and still be compatible with much nicer caps.

I think the keycaps are the main problem, they look like a generic oem set that you can get from aliexpress for less than $30. It seems like they just slapped them on and called it a day. I'm pretty sure it would look better if they actually made their own keycaps for the board.

Great board. On the south facing LEDs, it's like that because some combination of keycaps and switches get interference unless the LEDs are mounted south because they are too close together. Well, that's the legend, I've seen it in some videos but I never had that issue, but videos convinced me it can happen in some combination of boards/keycaps (specifically cherry profile) and switches.

Yep 100% true, there are switches that do support northfacing and cherry keycaps they just have a little cutout where the interference would happen. If you do have a north facing keyboard (that isnt hotswap) I do recommend getting some OEM profile keycaps.

Dang, have it show audio levels, or any number of trigger mappings if someone is doing music mixing, or a metronome! you have the space you could have a whole bunch of blinking lights that mean different things . make seperate bars for build status, tests, and git status, when building software that have colors for the state, red, green, yellow. That would be genuine added utility as I would be able to know when the build was done before task switching.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for a screen (on our keyboard). Given the work to integrate a screen though, maybe the board could be more designed around using it to offer keyboard-ish features: Calculator ?, Internal encrypted password list accessible after a passphrase ?. The preprogrammed "rain" animation is really cool! The typing demonstration at the end was also cool, and very interesting to see the screen displaying the text in real-time. Did it feel like a distraction to you as you were typing it though?

An improvement they should have to that software is a way to import a PNG or something that has the series of frames so you can use any drawing software. Whatever improvements they could make to the software on there will always fall flat compared to mature options or at the very least not fit someone's workflow. Also yeah they need to have some kind of color compensation, either onboard or in the software or something. I imagine the RGB cycle has been tuned pretty well, they just need to have some way to apply that correction to everything.

South-facing LED is preferred for compatibility; cherry profile keycaps have a tendency to hit the switches on bottom out and bind up on pressing fully down when in north-facing config.

Why do you need south facing LEDs ? Because some thicker Cherry profile keycaps collide with led diffusers in switches when facing north, giving an extra click when bottoming that many dislike.

I do like their chassis. It appears vintage-inspired overall. But without a barebones and custom order, it's maybe less sought after. Things like the 8bitdo exist now for that purpose on a budget.

I have a backpack with a dot matrix screen on it. The app to upload stuff to it looks very similar, except I can also upload GIFs and AVI files to my backpack.

Forget the gimmicks, the EPOMAKER Shadow-X is a far better value. It has a TKL layout with hot-swappable switches and PBT ASA keycaps. It completely changes pricing game at $60 on Amazon.

I got it with the flamingo switches. Haven't really been a fan of their switches as i find their factory lube to be sparse at best for my liking but once i slapped in my preferred switches this board is almost perfect. The only real complain is the stabs. They absolutely need some TLC to make them passible

i forget what's the exact wording on this, but south-facing LEDs is a feature for some reason cuz ppl who have GMK keycaps (which are cherry-profile iirc) are scratching are top housing of switches or sth like that (plz help me correct this)

yeah, the top housing of the switch hits the keycap if the switch is north facing and the keycaps are cherry profile. However, there are some switches that are designed slightly different so they dont have this problem even in the north facing configuration (e.g. long pole switches).

The time I bought an Epomaker board it was not for a big dot matrix display. I got the atomic purple one with the big whimsical DOS font and a demand written on it that I believe in fairy tales. Part of me knows it is the ugliest thing I own, the other part believes in fairy tales.

Those keycaps look like they were planned and executed, without prototyping at all. Clearly falling short of achieving the intended effect.

That screen is pretty useless. I would rather have a fully configurable LED/OLED screen where I can display stats, create macros or use it as a secondary display for novelty shit. Granted it would be expensive, but nobody buys a keyboard like this if they aren't sure of what they are doing.

I don't really understand the appeal of linear switches. I need some kind of actuation response or else it feels like butts. (Negative.) Which means Cherry Red, black, clear, white, all awful. Brown and purple, not awful. But I still prefer an audible feedback too.

Agreed! I never understood the appeal of linear switches, considering they're marginally better than most rubber domes. Linears dominate the marketplace even though tactile holy pandas and their clones are the most popular switches. The only linear switches I can tolerate are Alps SKCL and even those are slightly tactile.

It took a great linear switch before I was able to appreciate linears. Cherry MX is not that switch IMO.
