Inlaid epoxy resin is a popular woodworking technique. Crayons, maybe not as much.

A few months ago I needed a break from a #woodworking project, so I grabbed a piece of scrap wood and melted some crayons into it. It looked really cool, so I decided to take it to the next level and make an entire coffee table with inlaid crayon wax. I think it came out looking really good...but it might not be the most practical table.

Tip for the future: If you stick your crayons in the freezer for a while before you use them, you can slide them right out of the paper rather than having to take the time to carefully cut the paper off!

I'm not smart at this type of stuff, so I'm confused about why this is a bad idea - is it just because the wax will forever be susceptible to chipping/rubbing off on items you put on the table? You kept saying this wasn't a good idea but didn't explain why, and I'm left a bit confused lol. BEAUTIFUL table nonetheless - you have skillllzzzz

Thank you for doing this and saying what you said. Throughout school and even for the last 8 years since graduating college, I thought I needed to never fail, never do anything unless I was ready for it to be crap, so I haven't done anything outside my comfort zone in years. But hearing how you feel about it and that you went through a time where you felt like you weren't allowed to fail either... Made me feel less scared. I'm less worried or scared of failing, and less worried about being too old to start again! So thank you very very much. I'm going to try again, and if I fail, I'll keep going.

that's awesome. Truth is, I've probably worked on 150 woodworking projects and not one of them has been 100% perfect, and not one of them has been a total failure and not worthwhile. Even if you're experimenting with an idea that doesn't ultimately lead to whatever you thought it would, there is still usually something to take away that shoots you off into a different idea or direction.

Generic Name you must be blind. Re-read the comment, and watch the video again. He addressed "doing" the top in resin or epoxy, while the comment addressed layering it in epoxy. Two different techniques. Not sure what he did when he "did" the table in epoxy, but layering (assuming that he wasn't just using that word as a catch-all) is applying multiple extremely thin coats onto the material in order to seal it. Im assuming when the dude put resin on the table extra, he just poured it on.

I was thinking using a coat of ultra clear casting resin would work but you said you did not want to do that for some reason. seriously though. I'd really like to know this answer. This type of stuff might be great for kids furniture (not that you're going to go in there with a bunch of hot things and poke at everything of course). Would poly be a good idea to seal it over the wax in this case?

Nope. I love crayons but I hate it when it's called 'crans.' It is not a matter of accent. It is plain laziness. And it sounds strange when you call dowels 'dominoes.' Moreover I am also a woodworker and I love wood as it is. Each and every piece of wood is unique, perhaps even more so than the fingerprints of a person. I hate woodcarving. The natural texture of the wood is better than any carving.

@romulusclay6697
@romulusclay6697 5 жыл бұрын
The people who could dislike this video is any person who was not parented by someone who hovered over you constantly and allowed you to play with crayons and make messes and do crazy things like take your magnifying glass and melt crayons and realize you can't clean it up and that it never really gets hard and it's always kind of messy and that crayons kind of suck as a material for building or constructing anything. Crayons are for coloring in a book that's about it we all learned it by age 8 if we didn't have the helicopter parents

I'm not too fond of the new music. It's great to experiment, and it's understandable you probably wanted to change something, but I found myself missing the calm, lowly played guitar in the background. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, but just wanted to voice that. It's not that it's bad, which it isn't, it just doesn't fit as well as the calmer guitar-only. This music easily clashed with your voice and made the video almost too noisy to watch.

That is fair. I will definitely be using the normal music the bulk of the time. But I do want to switch it up from time to time. I personally don't think it clashed, other than in that it's not what you're used to (or what you expect) - so for somebody watching me for the first time...they probably wouldn't notice it as much.

@@Foureyes.Furniture That makes total sense, I wasn't trying to imply that you should never do it again either. The music was nice, just not what I, or several other subs are used to, so I assume that threw a few people off. And for first time viewers, I agree the detail wouldn't be noticed as much! Just thought I'd voice my opinion. :D
