In this video I am building a chess board that could also be a cutting board if you felt like it. I made a couple chess boards a few years ago, and always wanted to do a new version and improve some aspects from my original design, so that is exactly what I did. There are a lot of interesting techniques in this one including, checkerboard veneers, mitered frames, cross lap joints, and more.

We get a lot of comments on this video about Shaun referring to the pieces as "the Horse, the Castle, and the Pointy One". Some people think he is serious (probably a vocal minority)... well let me just clear the air. He 100% thinks they are called the Horse, the Castle, and the Pointy One. I haven't had the heart to correct him, and all of your commenting won't help as he can't read, and doesn't know how to operate a computer. For the record, he also refers to the Queen, King, and Pawns, as the Mom, the Dad, and the Babies respectively.

I bought this as a gift for my friend kzbin.infoUgkxcZqgZ8Ynkiz5n_LxIWRlAicuzmz5kCHG who is just starting out in the world of wood work. He loves it!! @Woodledude
@Woodledude 4 жыл бұрын
@@pauloarnedo4019 I believe someone else already pointed out that it's a joke, and that technically "thicknesses" is the widely used plural. The "i" suffix is generally only used for loan words from certain languages - Octopus is one example; the word being originally from Greek, the plural would normally be octopodes, but so many people use "octopi" instead that it's become the widely accepted as a correct pluralization. However, for the sake of simplicity, it's also acceptable to simply say "octopuses" and be done with it. English is full of crap like that, which is part of the original joke. People get confused about pluralization all the time. I'm a native English speaker, and I'll be the first to tell you it's terrible. Which is part of why many people who study it take a "descriptive" approach rather than a "prescriptive" one. As in, they try to describe their own observations of how people use the language, rather than prescribing their opinions of how it *should* be used *to* other people. I prefer the former :)

As a chess player, I can tell you that there are a few things I would add to make it a custom made chess board. ie; Both sides should have a design where you can put the pieces taken as you play along, may be like a qtr inch carved section on both sides to place the pieces taken while playing along. While making it somewhat carry able, the bigger the better. Each piece should have a rather heavy weight to its bottom as to maintain the piece not easy to be knocked down. I am sure it will be sold.!!!

You should consider swapping the head of the queen and king pieces. The queen should have the multi pointed crown.

Despite all the smart assed comments below, Shaun, I think it looks great, and is definitely a project I would like to take on. Thanks for the demo of the simple techniques on making pieces, inspirational.

Did you actually have problems with solid wood chessboards warping, or are you just being cautious with going to the mdf base?

Pretty clever to make the pieces with the table saw. I like using the pencil to hold those small parts, I am going to adopt that technique. Nice video thanks.
