Great job on the boards!!! I have not done my first epoxy project yet, but want to badly. I am a bit intimidated mainly because of limited budget. LOL

Looks great. How thick is the board? What is a good minimum thickness where the board would be stable?
@JkCanvas Жыл бұрын
I like to use 1” to 3/4”.

When you made the mold for the serving tray, what did you use to make it so the resin didn't stick? Did you just disassemble it once the resin was dry?
@JkCanvas3 жыл бұрын
I used Tuck Tape, Amazon Link in the description, and then applied some paste wax. Depending on they type of epoxy being used. Total Boat 2:1 has about an hour working time then it takes about 24 hours to fully cure. 3:1 has a longer working time but also takes 72 hours to cure.

@JkCanvas4 жыл бұрын
The Grant Alexander not pour the epoxy above the wood. It is easier to plane the wood down.

Beautiful, I am new to this, what are the sizes? Is there a standard size?
@JkCanvas3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. No there is not a standard size. I custom make them when ordered. Those are 8x15. I have made 16x22, 9x16 or what ever you have stock for.

Very nice. I swear to god if I could go back to school I would learn all this shit. Ok so I can do most of what you did I have everything I need but wondering after I pour epoxy how do I get it look crystal? Sand it down to 400 or 500 and then what? I'm not sure havent messed with epoxy at all but I have purple heart and walnut wood I want to use maybe I should ahit wood first to try it out? I really got into this wood crafting and want to try everything. Thanks

There several factors when working with epoxy. First is having good quality epoxy. I like Total Boat because their 2:2 epoxy is “idiot proof”, yes I am in that category. A pump of the resin is 2 and a pump of the hardener is 1, so equal pumps of each and you have the right mixture. Their 3:1 is a little trickier because you have to measure out 3 parts resin to 1 part hardener, but their mixing cups make it stupid easy. I found using a digital kitchen scale just as easy. Then mix mix mix and mix even more. You cannot over mix it. Then add pigment and mix some more. My buddy Caleb at YouCanMakeThisToo has a great video on it. Once you pour the epoxy to within a 1/6 or less of the wood. This will allow you to plane down to meet the epoxy. Oh clamps. You can never have enough clamps holding the wood down. The righted it is the less weepage you get again check out Caleb’s channel. Once you have your epoxy set, planed (both sides) and sanded (120-240 for General’s and 120-400 for Mahoney’s) you have two choices micro mesh (wet sanding) sanding or what I like to use Generals Finish, salad bowl finish or Mahoney’s walnut oil to fill in the sanding marks. Both are great options. Hope this helps. I would practice on something like Walnut or local species. before going to the Purple Heart. You can make your own live edge with a flap wheel on an angle grinder.
