ePropulsion VS Torqeedo
3HP ELECTRIC OUTBOARD SHOOTOUT
Welcome to the 3 horse power electric outboard shootout! Featuring the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus and the Torqeedo Travel 1103C.
In this video we take to the water and do a head to head top speed test comparing the two three horse power electric outboards. I test both electric outboards on my 1436 jon boat that has a fully built interior, on the same electric only lake, back to back. Same boat, same conditions, different outboards. I'll share the results with you.
I'll cover the retail cost of each unit, one of the biggest questions I get.
I do a full breakdown of the differences in battery size and full throttle runtime.
I also take a look at the two electric outboards installation process and share my experience. I'll demonstrate the installation process for you.
I'll take a look at the power connectors on the units, the standard battery charge time, the solar battery charge capabilities, external battery hook up capabilities, demonstrate the noise level produced by each unit, and much more!
I'll give my conclusion at the end.
Yes, I am a happy ePropulsion partner and outboard owner. There is a reason I chose to use ePropulsion, because of their innovation and willingness to work with the small boat community to push the envelope in technology and capabilities. I already knew the product they produce and the difference between them and their competitors. I did this video to show everyone else the differences I am already aware of. Which is why I use ePropulsion. Hope you enjoy.

I have a torqueedo, and wouldn’t mind if it dropped overboard. Totally agree about the connector, but I’ll add the shear pin breaks ALL. THE. TIME. And the delay in the throttle almost knocked my 7yo overboard into the prop once.

I have an 1103C. Same issues you describe. The little pins on my power connector broke due to the bad design. Torgeedo said it was my fault and would not cover the repair. Repair was over $900 and was nearly impossible to find someone to work on it. Also had the shear pins boke after one season. They rust! I think these are import details for prospective buyers to know.

@@bfraik I tried tef gel on the shear pin this season, but it broke on our first outing. I’ve replaced it with the biggest cotter pin that fits through the shaft hole. My hope is the softer less brittle metal will stand up to stress better.

I have been using my Torqeedo 1103 for two years with my Etap 22i without any problems. My max speed is only 3.8kts, but not too bad for a 1.5 ton boat. I do agree with the comment on the difficult power cable plug, it could have been designed so much better. My problem is that the plug does not naturally align with the socket and has to be rotated 90 degrees against a strong thick springy rubber cable in order to insert it correctly. This cable alignment could easily have been achieved during the body assembly stage. My motor is mounted in a well forward of the transom, so it is controlled with a remote hand lever which duplicates the information display of the unused tiller. Generally, the battery is sufficient for daily trips as I need the motor only for leaving and returning to my mooring. However, for peace of mind I always carry an extra battery, although I have yet needed to use it.

I bought the epropulsion awhile back for my 12ft inflatable that we took out to the Oregon coast bays for crabbing. Didn’t want to deal with gas and storage. Started initially with a Newport 55 trolling with a lithium ion battery- not enough power when dealing with outgoing tides. Got the epropulsion and no problems with overcoming the tides. Salt water hasn’t been an issue either. Love it.

I love my ePropulsion. However I think you skipped over one notable feature of the Torqeedo, which is that it has GPS that gives you speed and distance remaining, vs just time remaining. In practice, I think time remaining is good enough to gauge whether you can make it back to the ramp. Also, one feature of the ePropulsion that impressed me is that it will automatically burn off power from the battery down to 50% if it’s left charged for over 10 days. This helps preserve the lifetime of lithium batteries.

I own the Torqeedo Travel 1003C. I use it as the dinghy motor on my powerboat. I rarely use my dinghy. I like that the Torqeedo doesn't drip oil (outboard). I can store in inside the boat in a locker. Nice video. Two comments. I'm not surprised at similar top speeds from similar e-outboards. Another explanation is hull speed. Both motors pushed the jon boat to hull speed. After that, a resistance wall comes up. Secondly, my one Torqeedo complaint, as Anthony mentioned, is the goofy main connector. It's always difficult to thread.

I do have the ePropulsion 1.0. Still, I think it's a funny video. A guy with "ePropulsion" all over himself, his boat and whatnot, makes a comparison between the Epropulsion and the Torqeedo. That is like the devil makes a comparison between hell and heaven. Guess who is going to win that. Anyhow, I personally would buy the ePropulsion again, it's a good motor, and I never had a chance to test the Torqeedo. Also, I am convinced that electric is the way to go unless you cruise in very remote locations. But, there may be a problem coming our way with these electric motors. We had a crack in the black part of the battery housing, the battery was not water-tight anymore. It did not take a lot of force to cause that. The black plastic is very brittle, cheaply made. Very unfortunate, the company did not offer this part as a spare part. This list of spare part seems to be pretty short. They told us to buy a new battery (> 800$) or, better, a completely new motor since there is now a newer version. Here is the problem I see. Even though more expensive like their gasoline counterparts, electric motors may become the same as an iPhone or other electronic devices. Sorry, no real repair, just replacement.

I'm ePropulsion all the way. I let that be known rather than hide it. I see value is being fully transparent about my relationship with them. I get many offers to work with companies and I choose to align myself with ePropulsion based off their product and continual evolution of their product. Instead of hide in the shadows, dress in regular clothing and act as if I just doing a video for fun, I show the truth. That's why I wear the hat, the shirt, have the boat decal. The video is to show the world what I already know, that the ePropulsion is a better product. And it is. It's not an opinion of is a Whopper is better than a Big Mac, there is no biased. I simply show on video why one is better than the other and why I work with one company and not the other. Torqeedo never had a chance. I knew long before this video where their product stood. I hope this makes sense. Sorry to hearabout tge battery. I cannot speak for ePropulsion on that regard nor know their warranty policy in that case. It sounds you have the Spirit. Improvements were made on the Plus. There will always be newer technology making the older stuff more obsolete. I do not see that with the outboards so much as the batteries. Even then, I don't feel it is that bad. But sonar and fish finders? Drastic difference every year. I know guys who upgrade year after year spending 3-5 grand a year. Unbelievable. Outboards not so much on that level.

@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats I didn't think it was unfair comparison, given the difference in the price, the work time, the charge time, etc. Facts are facts. I don't think the torqueedo looks like its in the same class. Dare I say in the looks department either. Maybe there are some torqueedo features we weren't given, but 50% better runtime would have sold me on epro just for that. That's the difference of a lot of fishing time on the water. $500 cheaper is a hammer given that one thing already. How many of us have given up the day fishing when we run low on battery (or gas). I didn't think it was presented unfairly. The criticism about the connection looked accurate. Seems like epropulsion is a more advanced design, which given it is newer, is likely. The next commenter had a good question about weight though. Is epropulsion heavier?

I bought a first-generation Torqeedo 10 years ago and used it for just two years before I gave it-literally GAVE it-away. It stranded me numerous times and went back to the US distributor three times for warranty repair. When the warranty expired I knew it was pointless to continue. I bought a noisy but totally reliable gasoline outboard and vowed to have nothing further to do with Torqeedo. I'm cautiously impressed with what I've seen and heard about ePropulsion-and almost interested. But the cost remains an issue. I just can't understand why an electric outboard should cost twice as much as a comparable gasoline motor. When you bring the price down, I'll be interested.

When you don't have the power required to jump up on plane, aren't you dealing with the physics of hull speed? The rule of thumb equation for a displacement sailboat hull is square root of the water line length x 1.35 = theoretical maximum hull speed. Without planing a boat gets trapped in the trough of the bow wave. So, the square root of 14 (even thought the waterline length is less) = 3.74 x 1.35 = 5.05 , but that's in knots. In MPH it's 5.81 mph. Which is pretty darn close to max speed you demonstrated in this video. Doesn't it require some horsepower and speed to jump up and skim the surface of the water? And if that's not achievable isn't our speed confined to the physics of pushing the weight of water we displace aside and it reuniting behind us? Can anyone 'splain this to me?

On the ePropulsion, I like the fact that I can simultaneously solar charge the internal battery while I'm using it and now with the Spirit1.0 Plus which is a stronger 48v version, if your internal battery becomes spent you can simply attach an external battery, the E40, while your now removed internal battery continues being solar recharged and its just a little more than a second internal battery (I don't think the E40 floats though). Too bad the prop is not of the weedless type either. I'm just not sure after all that expense it would push a Sea Eagle FastCat 14.4, catamaran-hulled, 4-passenger, inflatable, pontoon boat along at displacement hullspeed with some reserve if the wind should come up. If I opted to go with the next two bigger-sized motors I'd be talking about spending more than the rest of the boat and trailer combined. Probably not worth it.

One thing that I think is holding both of these back, especially the torqueedo, is the fact that you can’t run them off of normal trolling motor batteries. The epropulsion at least gives you the option to buy an external battery but it has to be the one that they make. No experience with either and I’m just now learning of most of the features, so maybe there’s a way to jerry rig them but I feel like that would be a big turn off for many potential buyers. Especially those who may already have extra marine batteries ready to go into their boats.

Very good changes. ePropulsion is giving Torqeedo the urgency to improve quickly. Competition is good for us users. I have a Travel 1003C and agree with the cable connecting woes - shear pin also. Otherwise it moves my Capri 22 (2250 lb sailboat) to just under hull speed in most weather and seas. I bought it primarily for my dinghy. I use a Torqeedo Cruise 2.0 as the main electric outboard. The tiller is built-in and is not detached normally. It can be removed and changed to a remote throttle. That fidgety data cable is still there but is now internal. Most people will never see it, let alone touch it. The battery slot looks the same, but the power connector self aligns as the battery fully seats. The battery is held in place with a large top-mounted integral clip. No more orange "locking pin" to get lost!

the big concern is the battery longevity, Torqeedo is using some Panasonic cells, no clue about the Hong Kong built ePropulsion, time will say which is better. Torqeedo battery cells you can't replace one by one without serious damage on the circuit, they are fixed in some tar, no clue about ePropulsion battery if you can replace cells/repair by yourself.

I am curious about longlivity of both. A friend of mine owns a 2kw 24V torqueedo and 2 motors died because of water came into the motor leading to a $1500 damage twice. Bad luck or shity quality? There is no cheap rebuild kit available. Is there any service kit or seals available for both?

i can't speak for the Torqeedo at this point but we have run the ePropulsion's for years here in Ga, only know of one lower unit having to be replaced on one that was used very very heavily. I myself have never had any issues nor has my friends. Good thing for ePropulsion is since that video, they have implemented more dealers in the US and here in Ga TBNation Outdoors Southeast is a certified ePropulsion service center. Definitely good to have a network if you need it.

I owned both of these motors. So far im very satisfied with the Epropulsion. I bought a torqeedo and had nonstop issues. Bought a back up battery and a extra tiller as the screen failed. The torquedo warrentee is usless. I took it to a service center for another issue and they told me it would cost me 600 dollars to repair a new motor. There was nothing wrong with the motor. I'm looking to repower my sailboat and would not consider a torquedo product.

Comparing the details are very simple, your preferred comparisons, process of elimination, the preferred choice will always take top place, if your money is not that much of a matter, your details were good, I've just recently discovered electric boats, didn't know the market was that big, as for having a big interest in fishing is huge plus, as for getting to a certain spot in the given lake 20,40,50 mile so-to-speak of if really handy, but only if you make note of how much battery run time you actually have, then you sitting fishing and slow trolling, but now that I have seen the personal home made built, in my opinion beats factory built every time, putting in your own floor plans pattern is icing on the cake, I think the battery operated system beats the gasoline motor all the way around, beats gas hands down, it's a no brainer,

Now that ive made my mind up after this video i'll definately try to save money for the spirit 1.0 plus with the external batttery. I just wish they came 2nd hand because of the price tag on it. I wanted to start a boat project and bought a polyester base console boat and im ready to sail besides the missing engine. Too bad i just became homeless so its gonna take a while but im sure ill be happy with it in the end. Again, thanks for the video!

It would havee been nice if you took the time to provide a waterline length and have the boat and your stuff weighed in order to make your speed and run time data relevant to other vessels.. How do they have the nerve to rate a 1.0 kw motor at 3 hp? The engineering conversions that I've been taught are that 1.0 kw motor is only 1.3 hp. Does not matter if its gas, electric, diesel, steam or photon power, 746 watts = 1.0 horsepower. Could have been a great video if the objectivity wasn't compromised

Haha, I'm transparent! I work with ePropulsion for a reason- all the facts stated in the video. Their product and technology is pushing the envelope in the electric only community and simply out doing the competition. If I didn't wear my hat or shirt, I'd get called out for being a fake trying to pass as a non affiliate. Again, I am a affiliate and ambassador for ePropulsion but the testing and demonstration in the video is real. I guess I am biased because what is in the video is why I work with ePropulsion and why I share with the world. Side note, if the competition could outperform ePropulsion, you'd simply not see this video because I'd have no case.

Hello, the XS has worked out for me with a 15” transom, but based on the recommended lengths provided by ePropulsion I would go with a Short for a 16” transom (16 (transom) + 5.5 (propeller) + 4 (extra) = 25.5). Shaft Options Shaft Length XS 52.5 cm / 20.7 inches S 62.5 cm / 24.6 inches L 75 cm / 29.5 inches

Both these motors are rated at 71 or 72 lbs of thrust. I don't get how they can call that 3 hp equivalent? I have a 36v MotorGuide salt water trolling motor that has 105 lbs of thrust and it certainly isn't sold as 4+ hp equiv. I do sometimes feel the 3 blade weedless props sacrifice speed, but how much magic can they do with propeller design? Seems a matter of physics. Puzzeled?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 3 жыл бұрын
@@esvarwyn trash huh? The 3HP rating is equivalent in torque and static thrust. Not mathematical conversion of KW to HP. Electric motors can achieve the same propolsive power as combustion engines with significantly lower shaft power. The reason lies in the different torque curves of electric motors and gas engines. While the torque curve of a gas engine features a prominent peak, with maximum torque being available only over a limited engine speed range, electric motors feature a much flatter torque curve with ample torque available at any engine speed. With that said the 3hp rating these manufacturers give is not a direct mathematical breakdown of kw-hp but more so an equivalent based off what I stated above.
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 3 жыл бұрын
@@esvarwyn Also, I showed in another video how the Spirit 1.0 plus absolutely smokes a 70pd thrust 24v system by Minn Kota. Either of the outboards in this video would shame a 24v trolling motor. Completely different leagues especially given the outboards a much lighter, brushless and direct drive.
@tomcen
@tomcen 3 жыл бұрын
First, 1kW is the input power of the electric motor, not the shaft power. When we talk about gas-powered outboard, the power is referring to the shaft power, say Mercury 20HP, Yamaha 425HP, Mercury Racing 450HP. Second, the 3HP of Spirit 1.0 Plus is the equivalent horsepower to gas-powered outboard. The 3HP is neither shaft power nor input power. By equivalent horsepower to gas-powered outboard, it means both outboards have a similar speed at the same load. You could check the ePropulsion performance report (www.epropulsion.com/performance-bulletins), and you will find a 14ft dinghy can go 6.2 mph with Spirit 1.0. If you swap to a Mercury 3.5HP FourStroke, you will have 6 mph too. That’s why we say it’s a 3HP outboard.

I've had my spirit 1.0 plus for a year. My only issue with it is that the propeller is a vegetation magnet. I have to pull the weeds off by hand too often. I have a little 30 lb thrust minn kota that rarely traps weeds and if it does, I just put it in reverse and the weeds kick off. Does this weed problem happen to anyone else? Also, I have not been able to find that epropulsion sells a weedless propeller. Any possible suggestions\solutions would be appreciated. Thank you

What about WEIGHT?? What is the weight difference between the two? Since the Epropulsion has a "bigger" battery, does it weigh more? You also forgot to mention the Torqeedo has 2 cables, the ePropoulsion only has 1! They BOTH need to make these about 1hp stronger!! They are just a bit week for dinghy duty, another hp and they would be the bomb.
