Barrel harmonics absolutely are real, the issue that confuses people when discussing the topic is what most people call barrel harmonics are actually small sample size variations. On a good barrel with minimal material stress the harmonics should play very little part if the true dispersion of the rifle is actually tested.

I don’t have a tuner on any of my rifles. However, I do use Quick Load, in conjunction with the Optimum Barrel Time (OBT) chart for my starting load. I adjust the powder and seating depth until I get as close as possible to a OBT node on the chart, for my barrel length. These loads have been incredibly accurate. From there, I may adjust powder up and down .2g for testing, then same for seating depth. Saves a lot of ammo as compared to OCW.

Hey Ron, you and I have a South Dakota connection, though I'm not from Mitchell. I am originally from Lead and that is where my dad sparked my interest in the outdoors. My first Hills deer was with a Smith and Wesson Bolt action chambered in .243 Winchester. That was the same rifle my younger brothers harvested their first deer. I eventually graduated to a Ruger M77 chambered in .270 Win where I have harvested pronghorn, deer, and a cow elk in Montana where I have currently resided for the past 39 years. Thank you for all the information you pass on to us. I know I use it to better my knowledge of guns, gear and ballistics.

Actually, I believe the best choice would be a Thompson Center Encore with a barrel in . 410 bore, which is great for small game, turkeys, and even up to white tails with proper slugs and still is technically a rifle caliber, 308 Winchester, which has a huge array of bullets available for an incredible variety of hunting situations, and finally a barrel in 458 Winchester Mag, for anything you feel requires the ballistic equivalent of a sledge hammer to take down. The Encore platform itself can be tremendously accurate and is very versatile despite being a single shot. Follow up shots can be done quickly with a little practice, but are rarely needed with such an accurate tool. Slapping the barrels is not a cumbersome task and be done quickly and with optics mounted directly to the barrels sighting stays true.

The problem with engineers is there is never enough data to please them . All that matters is what happens on the target. Same thing with tuning a race car an engineer would wear out an engine when all that really matters is the time slip.
The main concern with neck tension is consistent internal ballistics, not coal change due to recoil in the magazine.

Are barrel tuners for barrels that aren’t great maybe or for store bought ammo? If you reload you can minimize unwanted results and essentially tune your system. Or maybe a tuner is actually just a micro tuner in the instance of a gun that is already shooting great? and at that point are you just chasing perfection which is difficult as no shooter is perfect. Or maybe it’s really for long range and below 600 yards or 1000? Which people are using barrel tuners? Lots of questions I know but my only knowledge of them is a reoccurring conversation on the vortex podcast.

If you are depending on small game for significant nutrition hitting the ribs can give you more calories than a head shot. Brains will keep you alive whereas pure lean meat will not. Shot placement is admittedly more important than for a head shot as you can lose shoulder(s) or bust the gut. I really like brains and did this with squirrels and cottontails. Racoons I headshot for pelt value and picked the fragments out.

With placement right in the boiler room it’s devastating, but it requires you to do your job and not hit any major bones so the bullet makes it to where it needs to be. Personally I’d rather use a bonded or monolithic for the margin of error it provides in the field.

I do think we are learning that we are not shooting enough shots to determine what the rifle will actually do, especially on rifle reviews. Hornady has done lots of testing in this area and have come to the conclusion you really need something like 10 three shot groups all overlapped and lined up with the original point of aim to accurately determine extreme group size along with point of impact shift. They also came to the conclusion that tuners didn't have a significant impact on group size with a large enough sample size. This also means that 3 shot ladder tests don't really show much either unless the 3 shot group is too large. If 3 shots are smaller than the previous rung in the ladder, that doesn't mean much. Shots disperse randomly and even a 2 MOA gun can randomly place 3 shots within 0.5 inches. But with enough shots, you are more able to see the trend.

@jaydunbar75383 ай бұрын
At 50 yards nothing in North America will notice the difference :P
@jfess19113 ай бұрын
Recall that Ron was looking for a large spread of capability. He said "300 Win Mag, yeah, you can do everything with that. I dunno, I would make.a little bigger jump from the 270 to say, a 338 or 35 or something... because the 270 and 300 Win mag...not ALL that much difference" . He did not say they were "equivalent." Others were choosing things like 375 magnums when their middle cartridge was something as capable as the 270. The jump from .17 HMR and 270 is very large, from 270 to 300 WM, much smaller. The 270 with modern bullets is arguably a big game cartridge. Then again, if the small cartridge is a 22, and the "mid" cartridge a short action like a 243 (or even *gasp* 6.5 Creedmoor), the 300 WM is a bigger difference: at least a couple jumps in bullet diameter and a couple in case capacity.
@scottstruif39393 ай бұрын
@@jfess1911 He thinks they’re comparable because he doesn’t take into account that people use the 300WM to shoot bullets over 200 grains.

@@scottstruif3939 Watch Ron's "300 Winchester Magnum Roars Again" where he spends a fair amount of time discussing the performance of a 212 grain load. In a video about the 300 WM vs PRC, he goes over the data of 220 grain bullets in both. It seems that Mr. Spomer is quite familiar with 200+ grain loads in this cartridge.
@scottstruif39393 ай бұрын
@@jfess1911 I’m sure he’s aware of the capabilities of the 300WM. But he often uses a 165 grain bullet in his spreadsheets, because he thinks it’s the most popular weight used by 300WM owners. That allows him to argue that the 7mm is as capable, while ignoring that the 300WM is handicapped by the poor BC of a bullet less than 200 grains. Even the 308 and 30-06 are capable of shooting bullets heavier than 200 grains in 11 or 12 twist barrels. That’s where the 30 cal shines. Ron frequently ignores that fact, resulting in apples to oranges comparisons.
@boygirlandadad58143 ай бұрын
I cannot waste an hour to watch Ron read peoples letters and I've wasted too much time already today with Ron. But about barrel harmonics, vibrations etc. Back in the day Browning came out with the BOSS system and offered all dealers one BOSS A-Bolt II at 40% off.M of wholesale. I got me a 300 WM. I called my boy at Browning told him this was my Elk gun, what ammo should I buy and wherr should i set the BOSS. A 300 WM shooting sub MOA outta the box. Turn that BOSS 1/4 turn either way and the group would open up. Crank it a full turn and it was not good at all. Now I've watched about as many slow motion vids as there are with barrels being shot and read as much as I could find and I cannot disagree with the experts opinions that free floated barrels do their movement after the bullet has left. But how does that explain what the BOSS does?

@galactic-goat3 ай бұрын
@45-70Guy No when they are regulated after the first shot is fired the empty shell must remain in the gum. At over $5.00 a shell I just follow the instructions given. It's sighted at 200 yards and works well, but I don't take it out target practiceing. Cost $600 to regulate it to the ammo I use. Bought 8 boxes so the ammo is from the same lot#. The gun is awesome but they are not cheap and they are real finicky.

How I understand it from the big tests performed by manufacturers and governments is it shouldn’t matter much on a quality barrel, older barrels that may have had voids, higher levels of internal stress, or bore that’s inconsistent may see some gains from barrel tuners. It’s a “it might help in rare cases” type of deal, problem is by the time you do all the testing and everything it would have been cheaper to just rebarrel it and fix the underlying issue.
