Sight a side mounted scope the same amount off as it is off center from the bore and it will stay there at all ranges. Done it for years. Works great

Just to be clear (as I've never used a side mounted scope, but very well may soon) If the cross hair center or center of lens is 1 inch above and 1.5 inces left of the center of the bore.... then you would place your cross hair 1 inch up and 1.5 left of where you want to hit?
@profesonalantagonist
@profesonalantagonist 3 ай бұрын
@@OldSchoolParatrooper, I have never done this, but I was coming here to say this a well. But for your question, always aim your cross hairs at 1” to the left ,in this example. But treat elevation as you would with any other scope. At 50 yards 1” to the left, at 100 yds 1” left, at 300 yds 1” left, always aim 1” left. Adjust normally for windage and elevation.

@OldSchoolParatrooper sight an the height the way you normally would but for windage you want to hit 1.5" right of the cross hairs

With side mount scopes you simply let it shoot 1" to the right. You don't have to cross. I have a 30-40 Krag with a 1-4 x 20mm scope on it and it works fine. It's no difference than shooting close with a rifle, you have to allow for the height over bore for shots.

Really enjoyed listening to this. I agree that guns are intended to be used, not put in the back of the safe. The closest I come to having a safe queen is my old Mauser 98 in 7x57 that sat in the corner unshot for more than two decades. I recently took it to a gunsmith for a full checkup so I can put a scope on it and start shooting it again. BTW - I did vote for you in the Gundies 🤠

I like listening to this while I’m at work makes my day go by faster. I use my ruger American in 450 bushmaster for hunting here in WA. Not restricted by law just like the big heavy bullets because most shot opportunities are within 100 yards. Other than that I use my Weatherby in .270 in Missouri. I love them both but the ruger was my first gun I bought.

Straight wall cartridges for deer states...most were Shotgun Only states that were getting lots of pressure to expand options, so they implemented some "straight wall " pistol cartridge acceptability. Then manufacturers started offering rifles chambered in those calibers.

I grew up on a farm in South Africa (without a father) but I used to ride along with my neighbor (livestock manager) in his bakkie (pickup) and he often had a 22LR for pest control in the vehicle. I can still remember the smell of the gun oil! I took my first Rooikat (Caracal) with that rifle (it was lambing season....). I now own close to 20 firearms and reload for them all. My son shot his first springbok at age 14, and I had the skull mounted. Great memories!

Grew up hunting with .270 30-06 and .308s. Dad traded the family .308 to replace the old .270 that had worn out from heavy rugged use. I loved the versatility of .308 for where I hunt. Picked up a new .308 Tikka 3x on a whim, not knowing anything about Tikka, a few years ago to feel like a kid again. Wow the consistency and accuracy is awe inspiring. Just wow. Thanks for your videos.

I picked up an old Savage 340 in .222 Rem a few years ago. It was manufactured in 1964. *It has a side mounted Weaver K4 from the same era. Works great, does not need anything more* I bought it in AZ from and old farmer that had it as his truck gun in NE. for 30 years. It shoots great. LOVES a load of CFE with Fiocchi primers, and a Hornady 50 gr SP SX. Does even better with 4198 & Speer 1023 45 grain pills.

Talking of safe queens I have one but it's not a rifle it's a shotgun. It's a 1966 remington 1100 20ga. I bought at auction from my neighbor who was the greatest small town local firearm dealer. Little shop setup right in his garage. But he would work to find whatever you were looking for. After he was diagnosed with dementia the auction off all his collection. That was unfortunately the only one is was able to buy that day. But everytime I bring it out to the skeet range or to shoot sporting clays it reminds me of being a little kid sitting in the shop across the street listening to the old man that always come in and chewed the fat. Being 10 or 12 years old just hanging in that small little shop listening and learning are great memories my safe queen brings back.

If you have a scope mounted to the side of the receiver then you will just zero for that off set. If it’s mounted 1” to the left of bore centerline then your “zero” at 100 yards will impact 1” to the right of your point of aim. In a perfect world you windage will only be off by a 1” at any given distance

My Winchester 94 with a side mount vortex 2-7 I zero 170gr corelokt at 50yds. At 100 it’s about 1/2 in to the right at 150 it’s about 1in to the right. Any further than that and that 30-30 round is bouncing off the ground anyway lol. My weaver side mount rings are 1/2 inch left if center bore. So zeroed at 50yds you’ll gain a 1/2 inch of right drift every 50yards.

Ron, I caught episode #389 via podcast - another great episode, as always!! ...and I especially appreciated your advice on the efficacy and viability of the 6.8 Western. The 𝟲.𝟴 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 = 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗲. How many times have we all heard on youtube or read in the comments section or some hunting forum, "Don't get the 6.8 Western. It's a great cartridge but there's not enough factory ammo options and no brass." If every person who's said or written that had actually bought a rifle in 6.8 Western, it'd be one of the most popular cartridges out there with lots of factory ammo options and at least a few companies making brass. Keep up the great work, Ron (and keep Ron on track, Betsy)! Steve in Flowery Branch, Georgia PS - You asked what 𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘀 & 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. In my home, we've got - appropriate for whitetail... > 270 Win (my current go-to) and 7mm-08 (my daughter's go-to) both in Browning X-Bolt Hunter, > 444 Marlin in a Marlin lever gun, > a Smith & Wesson M&P10 in 308 Win (also great for feral hogs), > a Herter's U9 in 243 Win, and > a Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag. >> Hoping to get a Browning X-Bolt 2 Speed SPR in 6.8 Western and a Backcountry 2.0 in 338 WBY RPM, then I'll be set. 🤞

Ron. Old gun powder does get more volatile. Just like TnT sticks of dynamite. It will sweat inside the case and become less stable. Ammo discarded in WWII will randomly go off without primer ignition.
@seth094978
@seth094978 3 ай бұрын
This is less true for powders after about WWI. The issue with really old stuff is picric acid buildup. Some WWII era stuff still had older powder formulations, but by the mid 50's or so powders had become remarkably stable and safe.

Yes, a splitting maul is the right tool for the job, but it should still be sharpened (at the broader angle they’re designed with). No, they don’t come that way from the factory, but neither do most axes and for that matter chisels, plane irons and even many knives. 32:57 I was out grouse hunting with my brother and found a fallen tree branch across his road over head height. You’d be surprised at how effective a pruning tool a 20 ga shotgun turns out to be. I used my Winchester model 50 with whatever birdshot I was carrying that day. One shot totally severed what was about a 3-4” alder branch. When we got back to his pasture I asked his permission to try it on a ruined galvanized trash can in his recycling pile. I expected some dents or maybe a bunch of little holes, but no. It completely opened up a dinner plate sized hole in that can. I wouldn’t do it these days, because in retrospect, shot bouncing back would have been a concern. Gave me a whole new respect for the shotgun as a tool, even with bird shot. I’m still amazed to this day that Dick Cheney’s attorney didn’t suffer much worse than he did. 43:43 if a safe Queen was like a Queen bee, shouldn’t there be new rifles in your safe every time you open it?

For a light rifle(that I didn’t buy for that purpose) I’m a bit less than $2000 into a Tikka T3X Ultralite Ember with a Vortex Viper HD 3-15. Very lightweight and a phenomenal rifle. It’s available in most any desirable hunting cartridges. I say I wasn’t seeking lightweight because I have no problem hiking around my B-14 HMR all day and scoped up that comes in at 13lbs, but the weight of the tikka impressed me quite a bit when I bought it on a whim.

@46:07. I believe that the reason for Scott's accident was notban old cartridge, but rather a massively incorrect load. Scott at Kentucky Ballistics was shooting (apparently) reloaded SLAP rounds in an RN 50. Scott and the gunmaker spent some time trying to figure it out, but it seems it was probably an overcharged load, but could have been sabots shaving off in the barrel and eventually causing an obstruction. Seems like it’s the prior.

The guys at the club told him out could not hit where it was aimed. I explained who a lot of military armored vehicles had the aiming device of from the barrel by feet, not inches. One being a 30 wcf and max is about 200 yards. Not providence. Midst hunters in a standing position, Can not keep it dead on anyway.

In Michigan the Lower Peninsula is divided in half. North is all cartridges larger than 22, but the southern half is slug, straight wall and blk power. Its the population density and to limit the range of the bullet, 300 yards vs 1 mile plus. My Biggest buck was taken a half mile from the High school. I do wish the old lever rounds would be allowed.

Marlin 336 in 30-30 with 170 grain corelokt or federal power shock for any deer inside of 200 yards but especially inside 130 yards. I have 2 K98 Mausers from the 1950s in 270 and 25-06 with 130 grain or 117 respectively , Hornady whitetail has been consistently accurate and devastating of blacktails for me out to 350 yards. My Custom AR 10 that I built in 308 using 150, 165 grain Hornady and federal loads have been great aloso out to 350 yards.

Grew up in an area that was slug or muzzle loader only. The farmland was divided into sections, meaning every square mile had a house on it. If you’re aiming at something 3 feet tall, your slug isn’t going to cross the section of land and delete your neighbor. Even then I stuck to muzzleloader or archery, slug season could get kinda sketchy

There was something wrong with the 50 BMG rounds that were used by Kentucky Ballistics causing an overpressure, but he never figured out precisely what it was. He suspects that it was reloaded with the wrong powder. He fired the remaining 11 rounds from that original batch (using a cord to pull the trigger while hiding behind his truck) and all were overpressure, but not enough to destroy his new gun.

What kind of deer and - Are we in bear country? So much to like and so many ways to like it. e.g. Lever action 30-30 is a joy to hunt sitka blacktail in the woods with (5 to 150 yards). When that rifle comes to hand, I feel like "the old man" is right there with me. You're a bit lite in the loafers if you should have any bear trouble though, especially at close range. That changes what I'd rather be carrying, "perfect for sitka blacktail" notwithstanding. - -e.g. 22-250, appropriately tipped, is a low recoiling hillside laser out to 300. Assuming you do your part, it turns deer off like a switch, but much too lite a choice for bear defense. - e.g. Above the tree line around Kodiak (where I'm from) glassing deer at distance and picking them off out to 700 yards with a 300WM makes hunting a completely different deal than close range in the timber or still hunting the hillsides. 300 WM also changes your relationship with the bears, to a certain extent. I suppose this is one of the great things about shooting sports; we'll never run out of lively subject matter. Gents - To your health.

Ron, what a wonderful show tonight. Just what I needed after the day I've had, thank you. Tonight's show was relaxed and humorous, in no small part because of the behind the camera commentary of your lovely bride Betsy. The only thing missing was a surprise guest appearance from that other beautiful lady in your life, Covey. Keep up the good work, you are the Johnny Carson of the KZbin shooting channels. Now I have a deal for you. I'm willing to drive to Idaho (I think that's were you're at) and split wood for you for a few days. There is a condition. I'll bring a truck load of my firearms and we can have some fun at your range. Just turn your back when that single shot of yours ends up in my truck. Wink wink. I'm in full agreement with you on "safe queens". Use the old gals, that's what they need. I've gotten to a point in life where even my fine collector arms are being used. What else am I going to do? Will them to nieces and nephews and some dear friends? Of course, but they'll be used and enjoyed before they get their hands on them. Exhibition grade walnut came from the woods and deserves to be in the woods. As to the folks saying that 1.5 MOA is junk. I say hogwash. You and I remember when the only manufacturer to put an accuracy guarantee on their rifles was Weatherby. Their guarantee was 1.5 inches at 100 yards (roughly 1.5 MOA). That was the benchmark of a fine hunting rifle in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. Sometime in the mid/late 90's they make big waves in the industry with their Vanguard MOA series. That may have even been in the early 2000's. Truck loads of game has been cleanly harvested with rifle that were not sub MOA. But we knew our limits as hunters/shooters. This was before the Madison Ave. ad talent convinced people that only sub MOA rifles and 1000 shot were the way to go. Skill can't be bought and "targets" are not wrapped in hide. I'll stick to woodmanship and ethics first. Now I fully understand and agree with your desire as a reloader and gun aficionado to ring all the accuracy out of a rifle. But I'd never say, like some folks, that 1.5 MOA is junk. Heck I'd hunt with a 3 or even 4 MOA rifle. Just need to know the limits and be able to salk closer or watch the buck/bull of a lifetime walk away. I believe that people forget or don't understand that a 4 MOA is only 2 inches off of the aiming point. Still in the kill zone. Add to that the fact that I don't have X-ray vision to know exactly, to the fraction of a millimeter were that buck's aorta is. So if anyone wants to dump those junk 1.5 MOA rifles, get in touch with me. In closing, please stop talking about the joys of reloading. You're about to cast me into a hobby I do not have the time for. I'm sure it's a blast, no pun intended, but I know that I can stick my toe in. Nope, I'm the guy that would put an addition on the house just for the reloading science lab. It's important in life to know which guy you are. All the best to you and the family. Cheers, Jeff P.S. I have heard that ammo that has been roughed up, bounced around on the floor of a truck for years and years, can have an increase in pressure. It's my understanding that the grains/flakes can get ground away and end up with a faster burn rate. I have no idea if there is a grain (pun intended) of truth in that theory.

The guy talking about powder getting stronger over time is something I’ve heard but it wasn’t actually powder propellant but I heard cordite degradation can produce higher pressure at a certain level of degradation I have no personal experience or facts to support this that I can list but that’s what some say ?

RON, To your request on the gentlemen? On cleaning bore before Copper Jacketed Lead Core Swifts. Same as 1 needs to do before trying out Monolethics. In my experience with them n the liminted but still made Barnes Orginals. YES for best accuracy. I have also seen the need to clean between Brands of Monolithics ie Barnes X to Hornadys GMX I havent shot enough of the others to say. I also since finding the above doing load work ups with the Barnes All theres n Swift in a couple rifles and my Late Uncle n 3 of his.. If checkeing loads with All Cooper Jacketed n Mono's.. I just go ahead n clean betweem them. Your Recent groups with the Hammers on Top of another n good accuracy result, as well as Seeing a vidieo of Accubonds n TTSX in a 340 Weatherby with good accuracy. This deal with not good accuracy when switching or in this case still good.Maybe a particular barrel / powder combo. Now if had the Bullets or $ for would definitely find out for sure. For now am Cleaning between. 😉

As much as we talk about the venerable 30-06, I'd bet the top guns - discounting poachers and muzzleloaders - the .270, .308 are still the top dogs with the 6.5 Creed quickly catching up. I'm guessing there are plenty of folks using the older cartridges including 44 Mag take plenty of deer but dint talk about it on Facebook, KZbin and the forums. Two of the three guys I know that have taken the most deer - we're talking 60+ - two of them only own one deer class rifle. One has a 270 and one has a single shot 30-30. Neither were purchased new by the current owners. I love the old stuff and the new stuff is fun to research and talk about, but I'd bet a considerable percentage of hunters haven't bought a new gun in 20 or 30 years.

I’ve come to the conclusion that cheap rifles you can get away with. I’ve not found there is a way to get great optics that perform great cheap. The one exception is Meopta but those are still $400.

Here's another reason straight-walled cartridges are popular. Reloading! As in I can reload the same piece of 44 mag brass over 100 times. Try that with a bottle-neck case!
