Having done a catboat restoration I know what you are in for. It will all be worth it in the end.

I feel your pain. I have spent a good deal of time lately trying to remove bronze screws from a Bolger Black Skimmer that has spent about 30 years on the hard. Worse, these were Robertson head, which substantially reduced the leverage available. I too have resorted to the oscillating tool. Stainless screws, by contrast, have been no trouble at all. I have no intention of using bronze screws anywhere except possibly for decorative locations as I rebuild.

Yea, that's a good point about using bronze only invisible decorate places, like on a bronze deck fitting. And I think stainless screws would be cheaper and easier to work with when putting the planks back on. I need to do some thinking about that. You've given me something to think about for sure.

Really nice to catch up on progress. Every time I see her her lines look more beautiful. Regarding the bronze screws, I saved as many as I could from my resto boat. Not all of them were re used, but most are re useable. I know it was a fibreglass hull, but I preheated the screw heads with a soldering iron, which helped with unscrewing them. I wonder if you have tried this method? It is a shame so much damage was done during the poorly slung lift. Keep on keeping on.

Never heard of that trick with the soldering iron! Weill def give that a try, thanks!

@@TheSalvationNavy The heat travels down the screw and softens any sealer in the hole. Hope it helps.

I live in Gloucester, MA. Are there any updates on the guy who drew the catboat being hoisted in the air?
@kb8wfh Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no. Any chance you might know who he is or see him hanging around there?

@@kb8wfh No, but it's a small town. I will ask around and let you know if I find him.

This boat looks very similar to one that was in Wickford RI late 60s early 7 0s named Patchy Fog ..........I wonder???

This FL boy was going to guess that ice crushed the hull at some point in time, ie Shackleton's Endurance...Ha! So much less romantic to hear it was an inexperienced crane operator.
