I would love to see how it prints on 120 pound card stock! How it loads it (can it load it in the trays or does it have to go through the back as well?). I print greeting cards currently on an Epson ET-2760 and I have to manually "push" each piece of card stock in the back feeder, so it makes it a very slow process. Would love to be able to load like 25 pieces at a time and leave it to print! Thanks for this!
@KeithCooper3 жыл бұрын
What is 120lb stock? Only the US uses this measure ;-) It depends on the thickness and stiffness of the media - you certainly can't use the internal feed tray - that's for copier paper and thin photo paper (just) You can stack a few art papers at the back (350gsm works fine) but not 25 sheets
@glowatyourownpace3 жыл бұрын
@@KeithCooper Thank you for replying! Sorry, crazy American here! The paper says 325gsm if that helps (sorry, I am an amateur when it comes to all this). I understand I couldn't do like 25 at a time, but just to be able to do maybe 5 at a time and not have to "push" each one in would allow me not to have to babysit each one! I watched another one of your videos and saw that there is actual greeting card paper! I had no idea! I'm looking into that now and would love if you could recommend one that works well with he ET8500. My cards are a little smaller than A6. I basically fit two cards per one sheet of 8.5x11 paper. Thanks again! :)
@KeithCooper3 жыл бұрын
325gsm seems to feed OK. The pre-creased cards I test with are on inkjet media and from companies here in the UK - I can't see why photo paper suppliers in the US wouldn't do them and at US sizes? The 8550 I have here seems to handle several sheets quite well, but it's something to check with any new printer. The specifications suggest it should work OK.

Is a pressurized air can for dust removal acceptable as an alternative? The problem i have is since this is textured paper, i can see that the rollers are making a slight groove all across the print! Do you think that feeding it from the back or selecting another paper type (card stock) might solve this problem. @KeithCooper2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! First up, you don't need to use the cardstock media setting - the problem printing such light card is that it is rarely a media coated for inkjet use - I've had a steady stream of people asking about printing 'basic' card, and it rarely works well in _any_ printer of the sort I test. I assume you're also not using ICC profiles, so you can pick any media setting. If you use the VFA setting, it includes the pigment black in the mix and _may_ give better results on some media. The biggest problem in card printing is always the media, not the printer. Any media supplied with a weight in 'pounds' doesn't bode well in my experience - check with suppliers to see if it is coated for aqueous inkjet printing.

Keith, You are a gem I have just found. In anticipation of your full review, can you address the question of if this printer would be worthwhile to consider in addition to a P800 (which I have), p600, p700, p900? The 8558's one certain added feature is double sided printing, which you have seemingly trashed? I will be printing numerous short run, largish, double sided, multi-sheet, folded pamphlets (mostly images) soon, and double sided printing could simplify and speed things up. (Affinity Publisher PDF -- to a RIP if p800) Thanks for your excellent work, analysis, and exposition. Bill

Thanks for the video. Recently purchased the ET-8550. If I use 300GSM + paper such as 350gsm I have two clear roller marks on the paper where it is fed through. I checked the settings and have ' thick paper' enabled in the settings but it made no difference? Is this a known issue as I was quite surprised. Additionally if I try and feed A4 through the rear slot due to the small paper feeder it's completely inaccurate on the feeding and skews by between 5-10% on the paper, even if holding - make the rear unusable for borderless a4 printing. Thank you for your excellent videos! I've learned a lot from you. This was interesting since I've been hesitant to test Epsons Enhanced matte because Epson says it's for pigment inks (though not clearly saying it won't work with dye inks, I'm remembering couple of retailers actually does say that) but it seems to be working fine with ET-8550 that I recently purchased. Epsons Archival matte is I guess a completely different thing and for pigment inks if I'm understood correctly. One thing I've not fully understood is what are the things profile determines and what does the media type selection do. As you said the same profile gives different results on same paper if you select different media type in the options. I kinda thought the profile overrides all the information needed except print size. Does it matter what you select on the printer itself as a media type if you use Epson Print Layout and select media there. Often forgot to change it in the printer but not yet noticed any problems. Can you tell how does the built in Epson matte profile work with this or is it necessary to get custom profile for this. Well, I might anyway purchase it from you if I end up ordering some this board. Lastly, what do you think, is that board thick enough to hang by itself, I'm considering this as a budget exhibition media without framing/matting.
@KeithCooper2 жыл бұрын
Glad it's been of help - media settings and profiles are two different things. The 8550 is unusual in having a hybrid ink set - The Epson set-up does install some Epson profiles and the driver can over-ride printer settings. Have a read of the actual 8550 review where I discuss this in more detail www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ It also has links to all of my 8550 articles/videos The videos are generally produced to supplement my actual (written reviews) not replace them ;-) BTW the board can bend in humid conditions and the corners damage easily Just beware that 'budget' exhibition media can, without care in use set the tone for the images too ;-)

Hello Keith I have just bought the ET8550 and hoping to print A6, A5, A4 + . The card weight I print on is 300 or 400gsm, hopefully heavier in future which is why I have bought this printer. I cannot find out how to print an A6 "CARD" in either the top rear feeder or bottom feeder. Is there a size limit for the bottom back feeder? I cannot even find a card setting for top feeder without it telling me to switch to the bottom feeder, but no option for small size card. Thank you
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
You may need to create custom sizes - I don't recall from the specs, what the limits are. See the main [written] review though - there is much more in the written reviews than I can ever fit in a video www.northlight-images.co.uk/epson-et-8550-printer-review/ Note the enforced trailing margin on the rear feed - there are no borderless options either IIRC

@@KeithCooper Well I finally found what I was looking for - there is ONE sentence in the user manual. "To select the rear feed slot as the paper source, select the option for the compatible paper size in the Paper Size setting". I always use 8.5 x 11, so that's the paper I selected. I did not realize there is an arrow that opens more choices in this (and many other sizes), one of them being, "8.5 x 11 rear feed". That is definitely obscure!
@melanielukic92033 ай бұрын
Here I am a year later and still struggle with finding the rear "slot" as paper source. Apparently there has been a firmware (or software) update, and the "slot" is now selected by choosing MANUAL FEED. (On a Mac). I think calling one "Rear Feed" and one "Rear Slot" was confusing - most people probably assume the rear feed IS the slot.

@KeithCooper8 ай бұрын
Probably not - if you use the rear slot, there is a longer rear border. It is also is very dependent on using card meant for inkjet, that and you can't stack card on the input... What's a large volume'? something to get printed commercially unless you have a lot of spare time ;-)

I also can not get my image to print to the edges of paper so if the border is off center on my 11x14 image then I can't sell them because they don't fit in a standard 16x20 matt cut out for an 11x14 or straight into an 11x14 frame. This was supposed to save me money not cost me more hassle. Any thought son how to fix this or did I just get a defective unit?

Sorry - you need to read the manual for whatever system you are using. I just opened up the back, fitted the guide rails and made the settings in the software - it worked. You need to select a media type that is supported via the rear feed However, that's on my Mac with the system I have - yours may be different, hence you'll need to read the manual

Do a search on "et-8550 manual" and you will find downloads for it. support.epson.net/publist/?model=ET-8550%20Series&lang=EN Not much more I can say, since the precise look of the settings is different on every system - it does work though
