Get a drum track and run it into a compressor. Set threshold as high as possible, set ratio to max, set attack to minimum, set release to min, set make-up gain to 0. Start the drums rolling. Bring the threshold slowly all the way down and listen to what it does when it starts hitting the peaks and when it gets into the body of the sound. Leave the threshold low and slowly increase the attack. Listen how it lets more and more of the hits of the drums through. Dial back the attack and then slowly increase the release. Listen to how you can time it to the drum beat. Now experiment with less extreme settings.

In Ableton, I always had the problem that I peaked in the final master chain from -1,0 dB to -0,9dB. With TDR I finally solved this problem. Thank you, Michael!!!

As others have commented, you have found a niche, exemplified by THIS video, where U show not only the why, the how and the what, but provide the ‘because’. At the root of this, your method of EQ/comp/EQ is really a subjective opinion, not that I disagree, but you had topped it off with the a healthy dose of ‘Because’. You explained, and showed the facts in a pleasant, non-authoritarian manor. Tho I already practice what you are teaching here regularly, I did it because my ears told me to and I understand how compression works. My point is, even tho none of this was new news for me, seeing the facts in your presentation has helped me visualize the processes in my head better than I already had. Nice job mate & thank you!

I was always convinced I needed to use compression first, but I found that sometimes (mainly when things weren't really recorded properly) I couldn't get it it to work how I wanted it to: it would react to peaks in frequency ranges where I didn't want it to do so. Game changer when I started using eq first in these kinds of situations.

mic pre-->adda --> - comp, EQ, DeEsser maybe, chorus pitch etc (verbs delays on bus) goal is to enter with the clearest signal, then add some gain if necessary, maybe gate or de esser, then a comp then once the levels noiseless and crystal clear, you can boost them with a group, sidekick, bus or master sing a comp but the comp is before fx (pitch. or mod fx on channel is ok) but verbs and delays should be on a bus to balance the mix together.

Could you do without the subtractive EQ before the compressor by using a multi-band compressor instead? Just compress the frequencies that you want compressed and EQ (add and/or subtract) after the multi-band compressor?
@iqi6164 жыл бұрын
No, even if you're feeding a multiband you still want to remove the nasties first. The multiband might eliminate the post-compressor EQ depending on a bunch of things.

in some cases the *bass* of the guitar in a mix would not be listened in this case we don't need a to add bass with EQ, but there might be parts of a song where we need that low end and we could automate or sidechain to raise the bass. Really nice tutorial learned something!
@inthemix6 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right Boris, all depends on the context of the mix :)

What you feed the compression will drive it. I think I like to use EQ control first to tame the low end. Maybe some EQ after compressor to polish the highs and clarity

HI @In The Mix love your vidoes! I learn so much! QUESTION: How about you send the sound to a second channel with the EQ on it, and use that as a Sidechain for the compressor, so you get the range of the original sound, but it's still only triggered by the mid-low frequencies.
@OK-ei7io4 жыл бұрын
Smart idea! I’m not actually quite sure of why he didn’t also suggest this. However, one thing he mentioned was that with a more balanced, brighter sound, it might fit into the mix better. If you have a sound that already sounds great, but need to compress it in a balanced way, definitely go ahead and try this. Great insight!
@heavymetalmixer916 жыл бұрын
"It depends on each track but that won't help anyone" yeah, people that are new or confused about what they should do have problems because they (most of the time) can't identify what the track needs, having a method that works most of the time (and tweaking when needed) is better than doing everything from scratch, wasting a lot of time in the process. Very good video buddy, keep it on :D

Another technique that you can use TDR Nova for is dynamic equalization. Each band on this EQ can attenuate (or boost) its frequency range, based on the level of the signal within that range. So, it can be like a compressor and eq at the same time. So for example, if you didn't want to lose the low end on the guitars, you can set the low band to lower the signal level within its frequency range, but only when the signal is above the threshold. The other bands can be left alone/unaffected, if desired.
@inthemix5 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely. It's a good tip. I mention it in the video too :)
@davidnika4465 жыл бұрын
@@inthemix Yes, nice highlight of TDR, which is one of my favorites. Interesting that you used another EQ before TDR, and used TDR like a single, broad band compressor. I usually just roll off the low end with TDR itself, and use the multiple bands of TDR to catch peaks at different frequency ranges. But both ways will work: As usual, we use our ears to get the results we like!
