Learn how to build an equation from a story problem. In this problem we use the description of an open top box to construct an equation for the cost of materials needed to build the box in terms of the width of the base of the box.

Hi, I’m Krista! I make math courses to keep you from banging your head against the wall. ;)
Math class was always so frustrating for me. I’d go to a class, spend hours on homework, and three days later have an “Ah-ha!” moment about how the problems worked that could have slashed my homework time in half. I’d think, “WHY didn’t my teacher just tell me this in the first place?!”
So I started tutoring to keep other people out of the same aggravating, time-sucking cycle. Since then, I’ve recorded tons of videos and written out cheat-sheet style notes and formula sheets to help every math student-from basic middle school classes to advanced college calculus-figure out what’s going on, understand the important concepts, and pass their classes, once and for all. So logical. Such a clear explanation. It's mathematical beauty in motion.

thank you so much! I have always been so bad at writing functions from these types of problems but I understand it much better now.

I think you have found your calling. You are an excellent instructor. It is ironic that you and others who take a cognitive science seem to excel in teaching. Case in point, David Harp majored in cognitive science and know he has a ton of books on learning music. Thank God for both of you.

Have you developed this teaching technique yourself, or did you have a great teacher whom taught you this carefully step by step technique? I had a bad teacher, and in this particularly problem you presented her, he would just have written the equation with no explanation at all. For him it was a totally mysteriousness why people take a shower. With your technique I would had learned this five times faster. You are certainly an excellent teacher.

I guess this is why most structures constructed are a variations of squares and rectangles, its much easier to put them into an equation. lol!
