Equestria Girls Rainbow Rocks is AWESOME!

The First Equestria Girls Movie was a mixed bag with a lot of cool ideas, but felt very barebones. But it did well enough to warrant a sequel because the next year in the fall of 2014 Equestria Girls Rainbow Rocks. And let’s just say… the first movie walked so Rainbow Rocks could run. Rainbow Rocks quickly cemented itself as the best Equestria Girls movie in the hearts of fans. So with the 10th anniversary of the movie on the horizon, let’s look back and see if it’s as good as we remember, shall we?

Also you're right on about Rebecca Shoichet. Sunset Shimmer is not just my favorite G4 character, but Rebecca doesn't get enough credit for singing in Twilight's voice for 10 years. The Dazzlings are perfect villains as well, especially coming off the season 4 finale with Tirek it's like the stakes with the villains just kept getting more dire.

"My past is not Today" is not a prequel to Rainbow Rocks. It still belongs to the RR shorts, but it takes place after the movie and after Sunset became an official member of the friend group (what only really happens at the end of the movie). But I love how the other shorts all establish something that will come up at the movie again (other than the girls still having magic). - DJ's short shows how she sees the world and (most importantly) that she cannot hear anything when she is hearing music - The Rainbow Dash short establishes the Rainboom's rivalry with Trixie - The Fluttershy short shows Rarity's obsession with costume/clothing making - The Pinkie Pie short shows Pie is mostly in the band for fun, while Rainbow wants her band to be the best - The Rarity short shows the girls having to wait for Rarity and being annoyed by this - The Appelejack shows her having to wear a stupid costume, what could be the reason why she is so annoyed by Rarity and her costumes in the movie But the most important thing the shorts establish is that Sunset is not an actual part of the friend group,yet. They never invested her to do something with them after school. In hindsight I would even say the events in the movie were actually the first time she spend time with them outside of school. That would also explain why she looks so excited when Pinkie mentions they are going to have a sleep over. I disagree with Sunset being the second protagonist. The main conflict of Rainbow Rocks is that the people, Sunset had hurt in the first movie, do not trust her and do not really give her a change to proof that she has changed. Her friends did not even invite her to be in the band and everyone around her constantly remind her about how awful she has been in the past. Plus, Sunset is the one who drives the plot the most: - the Dazzlings only went to the school because of Sunset's actions in the first movie - Sunset is the one who informs the Dazzling about the musical showcase - she is the one who gets Twilight involved - she has the idea to use music-magic to defeat the sirens - she is the one who pushes Rainbow from the stage when she was about to ponie-up. What makes the students mad, because the Rainbooms should have been disqualified because of that. - she is the one who tells the girls they play into the Dazzling's hands (and gives the moral of the story) + she is the last piece to defeat the Dazzling. (The girls did not defeat them before, because they had to start seeing Sunset as a friend and give her a change.) Twilight on the other side does not to that much in the movie. - She explains that the Dazzlings are probably sirens, - then tries to use "the magic of friendship" (what fails, but makes the Dazzlings aware of them), - then tries to write a counterspell (what at the end is not even written by her, but by Fluttershy instead) - and at the end she gives Sunset the change to proof she is a better person now. Twilight is still important, but I do not see her as the protagonist. (Meghan Mccarthy also said Rainbow Rocks is Sunset's story in the DVD commentary.) The Dazzling are also kind of counterparts/parallels to Sunset. They are new girls who seem to gain a lot of popularity in s short amount of time thanks to manipulation and that manipulation makes people dislike each other. And what did Sunset do in the first move and before it? She manipulated people into disliking each other and was probably also somewhat popular before she became a straight up bully (as seen in her "princess" photos and her mentioning having dated Flash only because of popularity)? (Also they are all from Equestria.)

I still remember when I was a child this movie was released, and when Sunset's name appeared in the intro credits, I wondered what role she would have in the movie and I was not disappointed, she became my favorite character too.. The songs really are still a banger and I can't believe it's been 10 years wow, I will never forget the day this franchise started and I don't regret watching it since it started

I got into the show right before season 4. I thought seasons 1-3 were good, EG was alright, but I loved season 4, especially as the episodes were coming out one at a time. That season finale is a huge core memory for me. Then I saw the Rainbow Rocks teasers and got excited. Seeing rainbow rocks for the first time when it was new was such an experience. The banger music, the new villains , vinyl scratch being an important character, Trixie getting her own song, sunset’s character development. It was an amazing era for this franchise, especially since it was new for me along with season 4. An experience you can only have once. Where did all the time go?

Rainbow Rocks is my favourite EG movie after Friendship Games. I love the development of Sunset. When I watched the movie for the first time I felt really bad for Sunset because I know exactly what she was feeling. Stepping out of he rshadow and becoming part of the elements felt so rewarding and the perfect ending for this movie. I enjoyed your little music analyse and understood it. I never paid much attention to those kind of things. I'll pay more attention to this in he future.

You dropped off real early then, it got nine seasons, and the show really went places. Kinda crazy, really- Sweetie Belle went from making basically macaroni art to enjoying experimental blackbox theater, Fluttershy grew a spine, (and is apparently a huge weeb, and likes classic anime like Utena and Sailor Moon) Pinkie Pie fucked Weird Al in the time skip, Scootaloo gets adopted, Queen Chrysalis has a quite entertaining villain trajectory, there's a Friendship cult, Twilight has a friggin DBZ-tier brawl that had to be censored in the storyboard stages, the apocalypse happens like a dozen times... Man, it was a wild ride.

Honestly, the best quality piece of EqG media IMO is Sunset Shimmer's Backstage Pass- I feel loke you could just show that to anyone who enjoys cartoons and they'd have a good time. Its a solid take on the Groundhog Day scenario, with a lot of great rewatch value, (lol RD's reaction when she smacks Sunset's ass with a paddle and she says "thank you") and it has great supplementary shorts, to boot. But Rainbow Rocks? I still gotta give it to this stupid movie, its so much fun, and I don't blame anyone for having this as thwir favorite. I got to see it in theaters. It was my first IRL pony thing, even though I was a fan since 2010, it was great. Its when we all realized that EqG wasn't fucking *garbage* and finally was better than it has any right to be- the true hallmark of G4. And yes, I do appreciate you covering the supplemental shorts- they're a big part of the experience/hype, and everyone who actually consumed this media in a meaningful way would probably have watched this stuff Now, my personal most disappointing EqG "movie" is Spring Breakdown. Its technically better than, say, the first movie, but its conceptually the Mysterious Mare do Well 2.0 with a side of Feeling Pinkie Keen, with human Rainbow Dash trying to be a superhero and then going Chicken Little everyone else telling her being a hero is bullshit, and outright gaslighting her about magic. AND they promise the EqG girls in Equestria, and they just... fucking sit around and eat fondue like a couple of lazy fucks. (tbf, I'd loooove to sit around like a lazy fuck eating fondue in Twilight's castle, but its not good tv)
