EXPLAINING HORSE GYMNASTICS

›› Today's vlog and voiceover is all about gymnastics and grillwork with horses - with examples from my horses Khal and Dali. I hope you find this interesting and are inspired to do some grid work with your own horse.
To create this grid at home, the dimensions are: 3 meters between bounces and 3.5 meters between each pole to fences after that. This will vary depending on how big your horse is and how big their stride is so adjust accordingly.

Holly you are such a pro - your form when riding compared to many is just outstanding - your entire body is great but your leg and heels are outstanding - I love how you use your hands to balance and get Dali into a really good frame considering how big he is that is a talent - I notice you keep a steady outside rein and half halt a lot w/the inside rein which works really well - Dali 's form is really progressing beautifully he is very talented and like you say will just take longer to really mature - you are training him perfectly for his age and size and safely for both of you Khal as always is the "man" so beautiful, smart and talented - love his style!!

Wow Holly those boys are brilliant jumpers!! As for Khal tho, OMG he is just amazing!!! He just finds those huge jumps so easy!!Love them!! Well done for doing such an awesome job bringing them on and getting them to the point they are at now hun. Looking forward to seeing some more of your training vlogs, take care hunny. 🥰 🥰 Ps. incredibly exciting to be following the relationship between horse and rider and the progress of an exceptional horse or two as well 🤗 I feel really invested in your horses, and you, in a way I haven’t felt since the 70s. It felt like Something happened in show jumping akin to premier football. Big Name riders were getting all the rides with the most expensive horses…. It felt like the personal long term horse/rider relationships were on the decline at the highest levels. Big yards, more staff and high stakes - a lot of The hard yards put in behind the scenes by others and the Rider becoming more of a jockey 😑 Thats very harsh, sorry. I love grass roots, Boys Own, Jill Enjoys Her Ponies stories. Yours is a great story being written in real time. Big hugs for your horses and Thank You 🙏

I just wanted to say again, that the work you have done, not only with Kahl but also Dali, is so impressive!!! I try to follow the jump training that you do with my own horse, and it is not easy with mine, he spooks quite a lot and rushes fences, so the work you did with Rocky is mostly what I focus on, but I will defiantly try this grid as well, as I never really do two jumps like this after bounces! So very well done to you! You make it look so effortless and so easy, but man is it hard!

Your explanation was soo helpful, thank you so much for the voiceover and the analysis! I've been watching your videos since you got Welbeck and I absolutely adore how you ride and jump your horses. I wonder if you have any tips on finding the good distace. I've been doing the polework exercises you recommended a gooood while back and it worked wonders on smaller courses but my horse and I are slowly moving up to jumping 1.10-1.20 classes and I kinda "lose" my eye as the jumps get bigger and the tempo more forward. Do you have any advice by any chance? Good luck on your next show, the boys look amazing!

Hi, a little tip my coach told me. As the jumps get bigger (round about 120/130 height) you start to feel as if you are getting too close to the jump. Even though it may feel like it, it is because the curve of the horses jump ends up being more up rater than out. This helped me a lot, because I used to get my horse too far off the fences and end up causing her to jump flat, which would end in a flat canter after the jump. Hope this helps

Could you give some tips on how to see a stride to a jump? I’ve really been struggling lately! As well as any tips on a stable/still lower leg?

Where wereyou when I was riding? I would have learned soooo much from you! But then in the '90's when I finally got my own good horses you were but a twinkle :) You are such a good teacher/trainer and your horses are very special; looking forward too Wellbecks new foal.
