Thank you for providing this video. Thank you for the cost analysis of the the 27 year old Morgan on Pergolide. I have a 16-yr-old Shetland I just had to start on Prascend. Pergolide Mesylate. She doesn’t have any rotation. The one flare up of laminitis in the whole 11yrs that, I have had her, that alerted me to have her tested. She is also IR. (EMS) I plan to spent the next year pampering and preparing my heart. 😢. I won’t put her through more than a year on this medication. I own it to her, and myself. She was not overweight. A competitive driving pony up to the time of her diagnosis.

Both my horses have cushings! Both are 20'years old and both on expensive pergolide. One is a mini and the other is a Morgan. Mini has been doing great on pergolide for few years now. She foundered couple years ago. I manage her diet and exercise with trims every month. She has insulin resistance and prone to getting fat with cresty neck. Her metabolism very different than my Morgan. Morgan had very high cortisol levels, bad thrush, lameness, trouble shedding, muscle wasting and bad temperament (angry, crabby, stressed). Hoping he improves. No mention here about chasteberry. I give him that too because I'm desperate to get him better. Good video with lots of info. Thanks.

My TWH is 13 yrs old and had 'sudden onset' if severe laminitus, xrays showed that he had foundered and blood work came back showing IR and high ACTH count. No clinical signs of PPID other than the sudden onset of laminitus ... 3 blood tests, first extremely high numbers, 2 1/2 months later the 2nd test came back much closer to normal numbers, kept him on the Pergolide because we were coming up to the dangerous seasonal time for increased ACTH counts, 3rd test was during the season for increased ACTH and sure enough his numbers had risen dramatically! Good thing we didn't take him off of the Pergolide! I am extremely careful about his sugar intake and soak his hay as well as no more treats. If you have a laminitic horse and a limited income, the very least you can do is to take your horse off of pasture or to limit pasture time especially in the spring and fall, or during draughts or extra wet seasons.
