Glad you mentioned the eyes. I rarely see anyone mention the look in a horse's eyes, but that was always one of my best guage of the horse's thoughts. Also, pay attention to their "wrinkles" and "frowns." A horse in pain, fear, worry, etc creates facial expressions just like people do. Notice when they wrinkle their nose or frown, or get wrinkles around their eyes or forehead. They're just like people when using facial expressions. If you're mad, you frown. So do horses. If you're worried, your crow's feet wrinkle up. So do horses. Thank you for mentioning their eyes though. Almost nobody ever mentions that.

I do not currently own any horses, but I used to spend weeks during the summer with my uncle who owned two horses, a white mare named Daisy (who was blind in her right eye), and a brown and white paint stallion named Thunder, who was extremely unpredictable and deemed unrideable. I was only 7 when I met Thunder and Daisy for the first time. Daisy tolerated my presence, but didn't seem to care much at all. Thunder on the other hand, for reasons no one has ever been able to explain, fell madly in love with me and absolutely refused to leave my side! He was so gentle and calm around me that my uncle even let me handle him by myself, which of course meant that I tried to ride him while no one was watching, even though everyone told me it was a bad idea. I was 9, I had no idea what I was doing, and I absolutely nailed it! 😎 Thunder had ZERO objections to his best friend riding him, and he could not have been more of a natural at following my simple commands. My uncle and mother nearly lost it when they saw us, but after it became clear that Thunder was totally fine with it, I was allowed to continue riding him. After a year of only allowing me to ride him, Thunder finally let my uncle ride him for the first time. After that, Thunder started letting my aunt and my mom ride him as well, and my uncle started jokingly calling me Thor. Thunder and I remained close friends and riding buddies for several years, until he passed in his sleep at the age of 29 back in 2017. He was a good friend and I miss him dearly. He always used to play with the back of my head, neck, and hair with his lips to get my attention. He also used to flip his ears back, stomp his right right foot once, and plant himself if he just didn't want to go anywhere. He could be quite stubborn sometimes, but he was never aggressive or violent with anyone after we became friends. To this day I wish I could be a kid again, just riding Thunder in the Florida sun until we both got tired and lay down for a nap in the field 🥲

awww. yeah, stallions are normally more aggressive because of hormones. (that’s why we get our male horses nurtured and so they don’t have any problems or get any mares pregnant) not all stallions are aggressive, but we still have to be careful with them in the equestrian world. and yes, 29 is about the life expectancy for a horse. (one of my ponies died at age 30.) I’m glad you had a great experience with Thunder! 🌩️❤️

Years ago, one of my friend’s horses accidentally stood on my unprotected foot. It hurt like hell and he got off straight away. But after that, either he got a taste for blood, or he was trying to apologise to me, because he kept following me around and looking at me with his head lowered a bit, eyes almost as if he was telling me he was sorry and he wanted to know if I was doing ok. Dunno if I’m reading too much into it, but he was such a sweetheart.

My horse accidentally stepped on my foot, once, she was overly excited and got ahead of her self. As soon as she realized what happened, she didn’t leave my side, nuzzling me, while I sat on the ground making sure nothing was broken. He most definitely could of noticed what happened, and wanted to make sure you’re okay.

My favorite mare sometimes did a strange thing : while I was grooming her I was feeling something heavy on one of my feet. It was her, she put one of her hooves on my foot. Not to do a bad thing, to hurt me or it would have been more violent. I put my foot back. I do not really understand why she did that.. We have a special bond for 2 years. She is a school horse, a former racehorse, a pure English thoroughbred. Sometimes only a tiny little light in her eye makes me know she 's asking me for a little hug too. She is what riders call a difficult horse but to me... she is a princess who chosen me . She also keeps her head on the hay, to eat non stop, when I was absent for a too long time. Biting others, less than before, never myself except nipping my thumb skin if I 'm speaking too much, according to her, with another rider. When I leave, my sweet mare is anxious, swinging her head from side to side. I reassure her til she stops. One horsewoman said to me she, my mare, was behaving the horse belonging to an owner. I 'm sad to never be able to be her owner one day ! 🐴❤ Other riders are jealous... 😕

So pleased to see your horse "in your space"! I loved my horse in my space, meant he wanted to be with me. I didn't mind his antics either, licking me, nibbling me with his lips, resting his head on my shoulder or top of my head, rubbing his face on my chest or back (scratching himself), sometimes he would lean against me without pushing or knocking me over. Most of all I LOVED to play with him in horse play! Chasing him, chasing me, racing on foot to a barrel, stall with treats, and cheering when he ran in pasture! When I had my Cody, there was something adorable he would do. Whenever I would be beside his left shoulder at times, he would turn his head and snuggle into my arm. He was always gentle about not pushing me over. He was a sweet boy❤

So I work with my neighbors horses and the one who’ve I’ve been working with is named scarlet. She’s an Arab and when she was little a man abused her so she is very scared timid and meek, which is not like most Arabs. Anyways I’ve been working with her a lot bc she needs a friend( my neighbors other horses aren’t particularly nice to her) the other day I was just sitting in her in the barn and everytime one of my neighbors other horses would look at me on scarlet, she would put her ears flat back and get defensive. She never did that any of the times I was with her on the ground in the barn. My neighbor told me that she is saying to t he other horses “back off! She’s mine!” Anyway it was just cute and nice to know that we rly are bonding

I’m kinda doing the same thing but the lady I work for is a little farther away! Anyway I also just started going so she said we have to find the horse we wanna work with and stuff so we’re doing ground work and so I’m walking him around and he was broke last year and ridden two times, I’ll have to ask what breed he is, I know hes supposed to be a short breed but he’s pretty tall, again I’ll have to ask how many hands he is but my guess between 14 and 15 hands maybe taller, his name is legs, so I haven’t ridden him yet but I’ll update you when she lets me ride!! But the lady sends us out in the pasture by ourselves! So she trusts us

our mare wouldnt stay in the barn to eat like I wanted her to, when we first got her. Then one night i had Simple by FGL in my head so I was singing . That night, she stayed in the barn until she was done her pellets. So now I sing when I'm around her and it has done wonders for our relationship. In fact, other horses at our saddleclub seem to apprecitate my singing too! They whinny at me when they see me coming now. Love your channel too btw.

I rode a very nervous horse for about three years. (I don't ride her much anymore but visit her at the stables) and she often got very anxious when standing still. She also had problems with wither soars and needed extra the saddle. If she was ever feeling pain in her withers or was anxious while I was riding her she would turn her head back to look at me, and bump my foot with her nose. I'm glad she was easily able to communicate this with me so I wasn't causing her any pain, I know some horses aren't as visible with their body language so I always felt grateful that she let me know before it got to painful and then she would just buck me off instead!

My late horse used to start pulling the reigns with a timing only when she was afraid of something. She was a great horse not a single mean bone on her body. RIP Quimera 🐎 She died from old age she lived amazing 26 years

I have watched this video before, but felt I needed a refresher, just to make sure I'm being diligent in watching my horse's cues to how she is feeling & thinking. Thanks again for this video. As my skillset has improved (thanks for your help), my relationship with my mare has improved. She's more trusting, curious, & has learned that her new owner(me) doesn't need a bite or kick to understand her wishes, but I still watch for cues because she could have a trigger we have yet to explore together. We are still building our relationship of trust & respect & I appreciate trainers such as yourself for sharing tips that work. Keep 'em coming please.

This is very helpful! My neighbor’s horse is very nervous, and I’ve been working with him while the neighbors are out of town. My horses are very calm and old, but my neighbor’s horse is very VERY nervous and spooky. I’m not used to his behavior, so I’ll catch when he’s about to really lose it, but I have a hard time telling when he’s moderately uncomfortable. This was very in depth, thank you.

I've not been around horses a ton, but do see them at a bit of a distance very regularly, here in Arizona. My best friend as a kid was horse obsessed, owned at least one, and her parents worked a track, father was a jockey trainer. I think I managed to learn more watching my friend mimic horses, to a point where actually being around horses had me pretty confident. It was a nice feeling to know most of the things explained in your vid, though the bit about the tail tuck was new to me. One of my favorite behaviors is probably eager lip flapping, when they want to play and get moving, or lots of loving or appreciative head bumps to their handler and gentle nibbles of clothes, pulling them to hurry up. lol

My sweet babygirl is doing her SSL hours on a 400 acre field with stables and farms next week and she's excited to help out in the stables. It's absolutely amazing because it's nonprofit that works disabled individuals. My babygirl want to learn all she can about horses because she want to own one someday. I have been spending every session working to understand Bill and help him regain trust. My horse Diesel is prone to itchiness due to bug bites. If he gets fidgety in the cross-ties, it's because he has an itch that he's desperate to scratch. I briefly undo the cross-ties so he can bite/scratch the itchy spot and then reattach the ties. Some people might think fidgeting is "bad behavior," but I've learned to recognize it as discomfort.

My paint mare has been showing her teeth more but her ears are very perked up. She seems to be very comfortable around my daughter, my daughter lays in the hay by her while she eats and the horse just eats around her. She also laid down and let my daughter pet her. You have told the definition very great! But it feels like i know all of this information already because i observed many animals and people! And a horse is like a open book showing its emotions because a horse articulates very good! I have befriended together with a horse breeder 5 young stallions who have just seen people a few times! And i had the my mind set to make friends and approached the stallions patiently and transported them to another fascility! But in the moments of stress i did not dare to stand between those stallions and the horse breeder who is a professional kick boxer! The only thing i could do was giving calming eye contact because i trusted my leader that he knew what he was doing!

I am very much new to this whole equestrian thing, and while I know that horses have feelings and all, it's still hard for me to understand them. I just started horse riding class at school and instructor does not teach me these things but just expect me to know like a common sense.
