Funny story: I remember my riding instructor was helping me with my positioning while transitioning from a trot to a canter, (I took a 4 year break from riding as a teen and hopped back into it) and she said pretty much all the things you did! So while I was cantering, she saw that my knees started to pinch the saddle as I struggled to hold my balance, she then said, “Ok Meg, you gotta ride that horse the same way you would ride your boyfriend !” She then followed up with, “HIPS DONT LIE” And I was SO taken aback, she was always so serious - I halted and we both started laughing. 😂 But I took that advice - And it WORKED. My positioning improved so much. My Legs were relaxed, core strong and hips-a-movin. 😆

Another idea for staying relaxed: singing a song while riding. It makes sure you have to take deep breaths and it gives a different feeling, fun instead of worrying about your riding. Helped me a lot. Great video!

I was 18, in my second show ever, riding in English Equitation. Problem was, I hadn't had lessons in 5 years, and had NO IDEA what the class even was. I asked a young girl, maybe 10 years old, in the warm up ring, and she filled me in. In we go, and it went pretty well. I was so happy when we finished, I sat there patting his neck and telling him he was a good boy. I hear someone clear their throat next to me, and there's the judge, standing there. He pointed... at the riders, all lined up nice and neat, FACING THE JUDGE AND I. I didn't know about that part! I was so mortified, instead of just going to the end of the line, I rammed my horse right through it and took a spot, trying to melt into the arena dirt. FYI, I didn't win. 😂

My embarrassing moment was also one of my most fun rides. I was pretty green but rode bareback that day anyway. While cantering on a trail I lost my balance a bit. And I rolled right off the front. 🤣 I wrapped my arms around her neck and held on, so I didn't actually hit the ground. And she stopped, of course. Then I had to get back on. No stirrups. No mounting block. I managed using a small mound of dirt but it wasn't graceful. Lol. That was actually a really fun day.

Aa I love your videos! I have a bad habit of bouncing, especially in the canter and a sitting trot, so this is going to be very useful. I'm unsure what's my most embarrassing moment because I have a lot. One of them is definitely falling off at jumping a super easy line (just 3 strides between a crossrail and a very low vertical) because the horse overjumped them both and I just slipped off. My friend also fell off at the same lesson so as I was falling off my instructor was half yelling "oh come on, you've gotta be kidding me". Definitely a super embarrassing fall😂

My most embarrassing riding story was when I was volunteering at the barn a couple of weeks ago. They have several ponies which are used for children's rides, but hadn't been ridden for months because of the lockdown, and needed to be ridden because the pony rides were starting up again. Since I am really small for my age, they picked me. I had never ridden a horse so tiny before and I was bouncing all over the place and looked rediculous, especially around the normal horses! Then at the end of the ride, I had to ride past the little kids camp and the pony decided to use the bathroom of course all the little kids went wild. Although it was really emberassing, especially at the end, I think overall, it was a fun experience and the pony was really sweet.

Awwh hahha! I had a similar experience when I was a pre-teen riding a miniature. The pony felt like I was riding a donkey. I’ve ridden a donkey once too and they are not fun to ride 🤣 I can’t recall whether I fell, but I certainly bounced around the place. It’s embarrassing when you have people watching you

Well, my riding instructor would tell me to keep the upper body straight, my hips and buttocks loose, but my knees grabbing the saddle. There even was an exercise where she would put leaves under my knees and I had to keep them there for the hour. I have, for years, struggled to achieve and maintain this position - which is really bloody hard! On trail rides, I would usually be more relaxed with my thighs and knees, because I knew the instructor couldn't be watching me and it felt more comfortable. I came here precisely because I have been having such trouble achieving what I thought was the "good position". And learning I have been trying so hard to do something that is wrong? I could honestly cry. Btw, I ended up hating horse riding classes and eventually stopped with them, now I only occasionally do a trail ride where no one is shouting at me all the time. (That is also something that doesn't exactly help staying relaxed.)

Have enjoyed this video. Have never had problems trotting in the past but am now working with a Percheron that I swear, all four feet are dancing, but they are all doing a different dance. When I'm on top of him at the trot I can't get a feel for what the heck he is doing down there, and to watch me I'm that guy that looks like he's never trotted before. The level of frustration just makes it worse. I think it always helps to hear what we already know as we can tend to get in our own way sometimes. Thanks for such great videos

Omg, I'm in shock, viewing this video. You know why? Because you just said something that it's completely the opposite of what they teached me at my riding lessons. I've had 9 lessons so far, but from the very beginning, they told me that it's very important to squeeze the saddle with my thighs and knees. Cuz it's gonna be more easy to make those ups and downs when I'm doing jumping trot. It's very hard for me to keep my concentration, doing several things at the same time: squeeze the saddle, sit straight, look forward ect. I find your lessons very interesting, and you explain it so well. Thank you. But, what about this now? I'm so confused...

I never had an embarrassing moment on a horse but the first time I was at a gallop was the horse's decision, not mine. I wasn't ready for that. It was kind of scary for about 5 seconds and then I realized it was fine. I relaxed and allowed myself to enjoy it but I knew I'd have to bring him to a trot very soon because we were coming up to a road to cross. Both for reasons called "cars" and the possibility of the shock of a shod horse foot striking pavement causing a broken leg, I had to slow him down in time. Which I did. A nice little test, actually. This was when I'd been riding for only a few months. I was 47 at the time.

I would say bouncing, especially repeatedly and ongoing, will damage your spine, if not right away then as you age. Don't set yourself up for a painful, debilitating old age. Low back pain, peripheral neuropathy, slipped disc, pinched nerves, numbness, tingling. Don't let yourself bounce. And what do you think it's doing to the horse? Can't be good for them either.

Love your vids and my funny story was getting bucked off a Pony that I had called Dusty! At the time I was wearing glasses and was riding out in our paddock in the Fall so all the leaves were on the ground. I fell off and so did my glasses and there I was pawing around trying to find them amongst all the leaves! it tool a few minutes but I finally did!

Try having someone lunge you on a circle. At a trot, raise both your arms up towards the sky and breathe. You'll find sitting the trot improves. Relaxation of the lower back is super important so let the air out of your body through the lower back.

When you trot or cantering, do you have to grip your legs on your horse or should the legs be relaxed?

My embarrassing moment was: when I was ridding a random horse(horses are my fovorite animals) I didn’t know how to ride one so someone was leading the horse and I told him to make the horse trot, then suddenly I found myself falling. :I

A couple years ago when I was about 5 or 6 (I'm fourteen now), I was at a summer horse camp. At the end of every camp, they have a mini-show where you get a chance to show off to all the parents. I was walking a horse named Marilyn around in the round pen waiting for my turn, and there were some kids watching from outside of the round pen. I was so desperate to look cool that I asked one of the kids if they'd like to see me trot. The thing is, I wasn't hardly advanced enough to switch gaits without supervision. But I did try 😅So I got her going in a nice, steady trot. For about 3 seconds. Forgetting to STOP KICKING, she went into what must've been a trot/canter type deal, all I remember is screaming for help and my instructor coming over to calm me down. I was deeply embarrassed. Well, there's my story 🤣

One embarrassing moment I had when riding was recent. I was dismounting after my lesson and everything was going good. Whenever I got on the ground, I realized that my shirt had gotten caught on the saddle horn.. yeah 😅 I’m glad nobody was looking at me at that moment.

Not me but my riding instructor, we were hacking with 2 other people and her horse slipped and fell which caused her to fall off, my best friend was also hacking with us and also managed to fall off but she landed on her feet. Meanwhile me and my horse are practically galloping away, overall it was probably my favorite hack ever

What would you say is the appropriate stirrup length? I always feel like mine are way too long.

When your feet are dropped the bottom should be at your ankles, and make sure they're even. if they feel long, move them up a hole and see if they feel any better.

I jumped a fence at a horse show, but it was a flat class, no jumping. My fault, we were crowding another horse a bit. My pony shied at the wrong time. We jumped it quietly and kept riding. The judge wasn't looking. We still placed third. I didn't live it down for months.

Great vid. I’ve just completed a Natural Horsemanship course, where I was taught move my hips side to side ( like a washing machine) in the trot. It worked well, though I’ve never heard it anywhere else. What do you think? Also, she was very much against kicking a horse to go and squeezing your legs instead -which made sense to me, though there have been many voices against it. What do you think ? Thank u 🙏🐴

Wow! You got 10k I don't have a horse yet, I'll probably get one in 20 more years, but i just love all animal training kind of videos. By the way, do horses get along with other animals like dogs, cats, cows and birds or do they always need another horse?

Horses are herd animals so they prefer being in a herd. I’ve seen horses be best friends with other animals but I’ve also seen horses that hate other animals. I think it just depends on the horse

Hello EquineHelper, can cows and bulls be ridden like horses, with buckling or bouncing, just calmly and gentle like horses?
@catstakeover1272
@catstakeover1272 4 жыл бұрын
It takes a whole lot of trust to ride cows and bulls like horses. I’m not sure about the bounciness, but there are some videos, especially with highland cows, with people riding them. I’d just compare a cow being ridden with a horse being ridden visually. If the cow/bull is calm and trusts you then you can probably ride them about the same way

I have a few embarrassing moments... Couldn't pick between these two so enjoy: First one, a horse riding camp, a thirteen or so year old le me taking part in the "style jumping" competition. It's basically show jumping, but instead of penalties and time your'e graded on how well and beautifully and correctly you ride the course. I rode a pony, that was supposed to be a sweet one, but also was an ex-cross country pony. In the middle of the course she just took off to the corner of the field, and I was so unsure after that that I walked her back to the course and of course the whole thing was filmed and I still have the clip... The second one, I promised to ride my friend's horse one day. Tacked him up, did a few spins on the field and then joined another rider for a hack. My friend's horse is pretty easily spooked. So the first lorry that comes, my horse does a 180 and I slip WITH the saddle to the side. I had forgotten to tighten the girth before getting off the field and ended up looking like a total loser hanging off the saddle that was askew on a horse that was already ready to go home...
