Equipotential surfaces have equal potentials everywhere on them. For stronger fields, equipotential surfaces are closer to each other! These equipotential surfaces are always perpendicular to the electric field direction, at every point.

For anyone struggling to understand the last part about moving along the equipotential lines with no work being done; Work (positive or negative) is only done when the force has a component in the same (in this case work done by the field would be positive) or opposite (in this case work done by the field would be negative) direction of the motion of the mass/positive test charge. However, since the motion of the mass/positive test charge is along an equipotential line (e.g. 7V), the force exerted by the field does not have a component in neither the same or opposite direction of the motion, therefore, no work is being done as the (component of the) force and the motion of the mass/positive test charge are perpendicular to each other. Hope this helps! x

Oh my god! I was almost on the verge of crying because i have to finish a lot of my portion in a very short time because i couldnt study during covid. All the other videos on youtube are so long and they barely manage to explain things that i was looking for. Your videos are so precise and they absolutely make me understand every single concept so vividly. This video really gave me some hope that i can maybe figure this out. Thank you so much.

1 ) becouse of redius the equipotential surface is perpandicular 2 ) becouse of strength of electric field the line of force is further and father away from each other 3 ) supporting at every point is same or equal is the definition of equipotential surface Am i right ????????????????????????

I have a theory y we equipotential surface are perpendicular to field. Imagine a point charge . So, if equipotential surface is not sphere and some other shape , the angle at most point with respect to electric field varies . So,if field varies then the potential also varies place to place ( bcoz , force by field varies . So, velocity of charge varies. So, kinetic energy varies .so, potential also varies) . Just my theory not sure its crct or not

Summary Of The Video *Equipotential Surface* * *Definition* - Surface at which potential at every point is equal. *Equipotential Surface By A Single Point Charge* * A Single point charge creates a spherical equipotential surfaces. * We can draw as many equipotential surfaces as we want. * Where Electric Field is Strong equipotential surface are close to each other. * As we go far away equipotential surface go farther. *Equipotential Surface Created By A Infinite Plane Sheet* * In this case we get a plane equipotential surface. * Also In this case equipotential surfaces are equidistant from each other because here Electric field created by plane sheet is uniform. *Properties Of Equipotential Surface* * Electric field is always normal to the equipotential surface. * When we move a test charge in equipotential surfaces from one point to another we do zero work. * Two equipotential surface never intersect.

Also would it be safe to say that if field lines weren't perpendicular to equipotential lines then there would be a basis vecto parallel or tangent to the potential surface that would produce work therefore change the potential energy of the surface hence making it not equipotential which by definition to remain equipotential requires perpendicular field lines...

9:24 what about the work we would do to move that charge?
@Stalker-im8ke
@Stalker-im8ke 10 ай бұрын
That is not along the equi-potential surface... The qns we come across are either telling us to move the charge away or towards the source charge which ends up not being zero... If it is along the equi-potential surface, it'll be zero

What I thought is ..say those parallel plates wont be parallel but at some angle inclined from horizontal... simply tilted than all the point at that surface wont be at the same distance from the source due to which E.dr ..will change that is potential will change but as it is a equipotential surface it should not change ...😊..the equipotential surface has to be perpendicular to the field

@lafudge2929
@lafudge2929 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! The answer to your question is that only the work done BY THE FIELD is zero. If we were to calculate the work that WE do on the charge, it wouldn't be zero.
