I really liked them together. She was so very good in this show (Noah too) that when she died, I couldn’t watch the show for awhile. Each time I watch that episode with her last performance on ER, I try not to cry. Yet I sob each time. I wasn’t ever able to not let things bother me as a hospital nurse, I just learned to wait until I went home.

The fact that this couple still gets people to debate - or argue, whatever - is a sign that it could have become something on the show. Always devastated that Kellie was having such a difficult personal time while on the show, I wish she could have stayed and see where this relationship had future. Maybe when she was no longer his student they could work on this relationship. By the way, I never heard Kellie say that Noah hated her or he saying it literally.

But only in Student/Teacher situations. Once they are not working or outside the hospital things get much better between them. I think Lucy would have been amazing for Carter but they met at the wrong time(just after Anna left and broke his heart) and in the wrong situation (student/teacher). Plus they made him way too mean to her sometimes. I really like how much they let Lucy grow up over the time she was there and they could have brought out the best in each other but tragically EVERYTHING was stacked against them from the start.

This was such a waste. Carter and Lucy made such a great couple. The rest of the staff apparently thought so too. I love how they all turned into giggling high school students, teasing them because every single one of them knew. Worst kept secret ever! But for some reason they immediately dropped the whole thing. They put Carter with Rebecca De Mornay and Lucy just kind of faded into the background for the rest of her time on the show. Like I said: What a waste!

No, he complained and said he didn’t think Carter would sleep with a student. Which made no sense considering he already slept with a fellow student, a crazy patient, would have slept with Susan, and slept with an attending. He said sleeping with Lucy would chip away at the characters morals which was a stupid excuse given all the morally questionable things Carter had already done. The fact he had a problem with Carter and Lucy but not a problem with Carter anyone else including his cousin’s ex-wife says a lot. It’s like the producers were testing him by giving Carter an even more inappropriate, morally reprehensible relationship and seeing if he complained about this one. He didn’t, so clearly not being with Lucy was about something else. Must have been a big reason to make him not want such a great storyline especially since he complained of lack of screen time during season 6. If he and Lucy were more involved with each other they both would have had more screen time and more storylines. People said he was very professionally jealous of Kellie Martin because she was already so successful and he himself said he didn’t like that she got her first episode just focused her her character. Eric La Salle had gotten his characters relationship with Corday ended. Maybe Noah Wyle was trying to prove he could do the same thing. There were so many things they could have done and explored with these two it’s a shame Noah Wyle couldn’t get over himself enough to let the producers tell the story they had planned and wanted to develop.

S5E11 "Nobody doesn't like Amanda Lee" 11:14 when Dale introduces himself to Lucy, Carter gets kinda territorial. Maybe first time we see that the writers indeed intended for them to be romantically involved. Too bad Noah wasn't on board. On the one hand, they could've spared lucy's life at least, ship her off to some other hospital to live on, but on the other hand... sobricki's attack and lucy's death are some of the best moments of the show, so i'm torn :/

I love that episode. I like that Roxanne was always jealous of Lucy spending time with Carter or when Carter talked about Lucy. I wish they had let her live. I hate that episode but it was so well done and acted I still appreciate it I just think they could have had that happen but have Lucy survive and then leave. The show was never the same after that. Always tainted by the fact she should have been there but wasn’t.

I didn’t really watch the later seasons but I thought it would have been a good storyline to have Lucy come back and initially unknown to Carter be the one to donate a kidney to him. As a way of saying she forgave his involvement and fault in what happened to them. That would have been very interesting and emotional.

Carter was 100% jealous. He acted like a child. Noah's feelings towards the storyline were absolutely about how he felt about Kellie getting stories, not the appropriateness of the relationship. Its sad that Noah let his ego get the best of him as it was to the detriment of the character ultimately.

@B People need to stop exaggerating stories they don't know about. I read a couple of interviews with Noah and Kellie about it, and it wasn't about this. I read a lengthy interview with Noah about this whole situation - The People thing is very short and they didn't really dive into it- and he said that for one thing he just felt, as a veteran on the set, that Kellie as a new character should progress slowly rather than get the biggest, best stories right away while everyone else, other actors, who had worked for years on the ER had to wait very, very long for a bigger chance. Secondly, as I mentioned before, there was no spark between him and her in real life, as is often the case in life, and most importantly, Noah felt that Carter as a character would never start a reckless romance with his younger student. Noah felt it wasn't Carter, which is why he didn't like it. And no offense, but I think Noah was right. When you analyze Carter as a character, he preferred older women from the start- he had a crush on Susan, then in season 2 or 3 he was in a relationship with this older, blonde doctor - I forgot what her name was. In addition, I agree with Noah that such a relationship in this kind of work would be reckless and inappropriate for Carter. Noah in fact, acted as a grown-up here. So it wasn't about not-well treatment, according to all the cast, Noah was great guy on the set. The thing was, Noah and Kellie just didn't have such a great connection in real life, which actually happens often between two actors, the irony is that even the best on-screen couples in television history, often didn't even like each other at first. For example, that's how it was in the 90s, at the very beginning, on The X-files: yes, even David and Gillian hated each other in the beginning ! - they themselves, said so.

Another good example of on screen couples disliking each other quite a bit off camera is Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic on Castle. Katic even went as far as saying she wouldn't return for a ninth season but the show was cancelled at the end of Season 8.

It's not that deep. Noah himself admitted he acted in such a way that warranted him apologising to both Kellie and Goran. It really wasn't for him to decide who did and didn't get stories, nor how long you had to be on set before getting those stories. They weren't at school. The better actors were always going to be put front and centre. It's entirely possible that he was lovely to some people and acted like a dick towards others. He knows himself better than any of us, so if he thinks he was out of line in his behaviour, he was.

Actually the thing about him not wanting her to have a ‘big’ storyline was about her first episode. ER was his first big, well established role whereas Kellie had been acting since childhood and was already successful and established. He was envious of this. He said himself that he was really tough on her and not kind because she had been brought in and handed an entire episode dedicated to her character. He said they worked hard to be the no.1 show in America so he didn’t like that she got all this attention straight away. But that’s not really for anyone but the producers to say and they obviously thought she earned the role. Professional jealousy was a big part of why he treated her that way. Also if you look at Carters whole track record both before and after Lucy it doesn’t make sense that he wouldn’t sleep with her. He slept with a crazy patient, other students, an attending. Saying Carter wouldn’t have got involved with Lucy because of morals and it being inappropriate is ridiculous because a few months later he slept with his cousins ex-wife. It’s like the producers thought “Okay, Noah said no to Lucy, let’s create the most inappropriate person we can think of and see what he says to that”, and apparently he didn’t have a problem with that even though most people were creeped out by it. For Noah to not want Carter to have such an amazing potentially epic storyline with an amazing talented actress he must have had a very strong reason especially if he was okay with the endless list of others they put him with. Kind of sad he couldn’t get over that reason enough to be professional and do the story as the producers and writers and viewers wanted it. Still at least we know from the producers that they were meant to be together.

I have read somewhere that it was Noah who asked them not to develop Lucy's romance with Carter because she is his student. I love Noah and he is a fantastic actor, but he made some boring choices for Carter. He just shouldn't have gotten involved.

Unfortunately that was likely just a cover for his feelings towards Kellie getting major storylines (being involved with Carter would be the biggest) rather than any concern about the appropriateness of Lucy as a partner for Carter. All of Carters relationships were a disaster and some very messy.
