Always love how Carter totally misses that Benton has enough faith in him to assign him to help the others and also cover the ER. Without having to test his knowledge, or with any dismissive comments. Notice that Benton tells Gant that the nurses won't let him kill any one. On the face of it, it feels like Benton is dismissing Carter, but really, it's because he knows that Carter can do the job assigned to him.

It had a few - I remember one from either S1E2 or S1E3 where it follows Greene and Benton from the access stairway to the roof, to a waiting helicopter that's in the process of touching down, offloading the patient and the helicopter departing as they rush back in. I was hooked from the get-go.

@@panda5122 That applies if you were a serious theater actor in New York City. Many actors who primarily worked theater got their SAG cards on that show. I read that those who did the casting for the show franchises said it was a joy to cast because they had some of the best theater actors in the world auditioning for bit parts and it was actually hard to choose because they were all so spot on.

I don't know, I didnt think it was that bad. It's one hell of a ride. I enjoyed my whole residency, including intern year. You learn more about medicine in that year than the entire 4 years of med school.

the thing i found about benton annoying was that he was so shocked that carter eventually switched specialities and i was like dude you rarely let him in OR and had him covering ER all the time when he was a med student and resident. of course he switched haha

There's a lot of truth in this presentation of what internship is like, but at the end of it, there's something magical too that just can't be described. I remember the 48 hour shifts with no sleep and dealing with crashing ICU patients. But I also remember the fellowship of my co interns, and I can't help but look back on that experience and smile. "Welcome to Hell" is an accurate description of internship, but I'm glad I went through it because that's what made me into a REAL doctor.

Agree here. Internship is hell with the long shifts, little sleep, dealing with a gazillion patients, all of whom are very sick, and having more tasks added onto your already extensive to-do list, but it also brings out the best in you and forces you to go beyond what you thought your limits were. Just as strong steel is forged in the fire, good doctors are created through a gruelling internship and residency.

Surgical ICU has the most critically ill patients in the hospital. Surely there's a PGY-2 supervising the interns covering that unit. I'm assuming Benton is a PGY-5 covering all units of the hospital simultaneously as well as OR cases.

Dr. Benton discovered Edson was thorough and knew what he was talking about, and that's why he got the peak seat (in the OR assisting Dr. Benton). These days internship is a joke. When I was an intern, we had to do overnight call every 3rd night, meaning we’d be there from 7 AM till at least 7 the next morning. In fact, it was more like till 10 AM the next day because we had to round on patients, do our notes, and sign out before we could leave. Now interns don’t even do overnight call. Just short call every few days, which is a few hours at most. The upper levels (second and third year residents) do the overnight call!

Nah not really. This entire scene is hyperbole. I was a surgical intern once. Yes, we had a few long shifts like those described here, but that certainly wasn't every single day of intern year.
