ER Nurse Reveals the Dangers of Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke | ER Nursing

In today’s video, we talk about the differences between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. We talk about the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of both heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat exhaustion is characterized by things like headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, elevated temperature, diaphoresis, sweating, and nausea and vomiting. This is in contrast to the symptoms of heat stroke. Patients with heat stroke will have hot, dry, and flushed skin and a core body temperature greater than 104°F. They may have headaches, confusion, delirium, seizures, and even coma. They can have tachycardias, arrhythmias, and hypotension, as well as oliguria or a low urine output. Treatment in both instances includes hydration, cardiac monitoring, and cooling the patient’s body. During the cooling process, special care is taken to prevent shivering in patient’s with heat stroke.
