From a strategic point of view this makes little sense. The Russians have already built the new Siberian pipeline in anticipation of this eventuality and they will just increase the flow to China. Russia will take an economic hit sure, but Ukraines failing economy is losing approx 900 million a year from this move and its already only propped up by Western governments. On top of that, its going to increase the cost of living all over Europe which will only speed up the sharp decline in Western Europe of support for continuing the war and further antagonise those Eastern nations that oppose continued support for Ukraine. If there is an upside to this move from a Ukrainian point of view its not obvious.

After all the russian economy is doing better than ever (higher taxes, high inflation, labor shortages, lack of civilian investments and Gazprom posting losses can only be signs of the greatest economy in all of russian history). The reason for building Nord Stream is not only that the Ukrainian pipeline, built back in the distant USSR, is outdated, but also that Gazprom had constant problems with the Ukrainian side due to gas prices, transit prices, unauthorized gas withdrawals from the pipeline... The Russians were simply tired of all this fuss and endless disputes, so a decision was made to build new pipelines directly to the EU.
