IT WORKED! At first it seemed like it was a failure. Then after a few minutes the external disk showed up as the name I had been trying to give it! It's now USABLE!!! Thank you Tech & Design! So, if there is anyone out there who is seeing an error even after following the steps exactly, it might take a few minutes for your computer/laptop to recognize the changes you've just made. Chriszson CBI I had to take mine into a shop. They told me there is a problem with some mac hardrives that lock you out when you try to reset it. He had to take my hard drive out and manually reset it. Hope any of this makes sense, I don’t know much about computers

I had a different error, saying that there isn't enough space. The command you've shown doesn't fix it, but you gave me the idea to use the terminal and i've managed myself to fix it after some commands i've wrote in the terminal (using the diskutil help). Thanks for the idea!

When I try to erase the disk it appears the same error "couldn't modify partition map. (-69874)" Anyhint on how to fix this. This flash drive was used on a Windows computer. Worked perfectly - you don't need the `clear` command, as it makes copying the /dev/disk* easier if you leave the output where it is.

For anyone that’s stuck on the utility drive and aren’t able to erase. Easy fix! Plug it into a windows computer, format it there, plug it back into the MacBook and erase. I just did it and it worked.

Hey thanks for this. But had to go one step further. I Had the issue whilst booting from an OSX Catalina usb Drive that I couldn’t format the main SSD in my MBP. Needed to use ‘diskutil unmountdisk force /....’ then it worked!

Sometimes USB C ports on the recent Macs are not as reliable as USB A ports. So if you still have some old Macs, try too format your external dives on the USB A ports as well.
