NOTICE: I Formatted my USB drive. I was under the presumption this would remove everything associated with "Ventoy." However, "Formatting"" the USB drive did NOT remove Ventoy. When Ventoy is placed on the USB drive, Ventoy creates its own partition. This partition is NOT "Formatted" when the USB drive is "Formatted." Apparentlly the only way to get rid of Ventoy from a USB drive is to "Merge" all the partitions, and then do a "Format" of the USB drive. I was going to use MemTest86 on its own - without Ventoy. So, MemTest86 was placed on the one partition that was new and had been formatted. But, when I used MemTest86 it showed up under "Ventoy," even though MemTest was on the other partition.

I learned about Ventoy about two years ago, as I was trying out every multiboot flash drive program around. The problem was some ISO's would work and others not. So far I have found them all to work and work well with Ventoy. I have several Ventoy disks that I create so that if one gets corrupted when you least expect it I have another. I also have a 2TB Seagate Personal drive and have over 80 different ISO's on it. Like you I have also created a folder to put other software and files that I might need. I have started using a larger group of portable applications which do not have to be installed into the system like the normal installs, for working with a computer customer. Thank you for sharing this video. Side note, when you go to install a linux distro like Ubuntu, you need to remove the USB drive before you do the install. It will otherwise become part of the boot process of the installed distro. That corrupts the Ventoy drive and you have to do a remake when you get home.

You should consider adding information about how Ventoy's "security key" may need to be enrolled before before the newly created Ventoy USB can be used to boot to the various ISO options on the USB. I have created some Ventoy USB over the past few years and never encountered the problem I had when creating a new USB to use with my new Windows 11 computer, using your easy to follow guide. Because secure boot was in effect I needed to enroll the key (I did it through the key method, not the hash method) and once I did that the Ventoy USB worked fine. Yes, I know I could have turned secure boot off and used Ventory and then turn secure boot back on, but hey when your are troubleshooting a problem that step could be forgotten.

These are all methods for which computer technicians are usually stuck. Nowadays everything is much more simplified. All you need is a copy, even the free version, of Aomei Backupper, which creates a grub menu from which you can choose whether to enter your OS or Aomei's recovery system. Aomei also creates incremental backups for you to access at boot time, at any time.

Acronis was my go to for mnay years. Macrium went to a pricing model but you can still find the free versions out there online and they work great
@PracticaProphetica Жыл бұрын
I used to use Acronis, but it didn't work well for copying one drive to another (when both drives were in an external caddy)...it kept using the boot info from the internal drive, and if that was different than the external, oh well. I guess this was supposed to be a limitation on the home version to prevent you from using it in a tech environment. I tried Macrium (free) and liked it, especially it's emergency boot USB creation. So I purchased a 4-license family pack on a sale they had. Shortly after they jacked up the price to a subscription model (per machine) that was expensive. I might use more than 4 licenses, so I was looking elsehwere. Since then I've considered Hasleo Backup Suite. It is free and even supports incremental and differential backups (which FBackup does not do in the free version). I'm going to be experimenting with it in the future.
@RobinDale504 ай бұрын
@@AskYourComputerGuy You have to get the older versions of Macrium from before they went pricing-only. The last free version was v7.3.6391. I have only done Windows stuff, but Macrium has worked every time even with modern hardware (newer PC + SSD).

@AskYourComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
Ventoy is better, in my opinion, because you not only have the ability to back up to a flash drive (or external storage in your case), but you have the added benefit of tons of repair tools and operating system installers on the same disk. Just makes sense to wear one took belt vs several. But everyone has different needs ;)

Back in the day, I used Hiren's by loading on a writable mini-CD [you could get versions that were credit-card sized that could pop straight into your wallet for an 'everyday carry"]. There were also mini-distros of Linux, and of course, it was lots of command-line interfacing. So familiarity with bash and DOS shell was important. The thing about read-only installation/repair media is that you can be absolutely sure that the change-rooted environment you boot up in is clean of malware [provided of course your media was clean to begin with!; -)] I suppose in theory you could come across viral code in the CMOS memory, but I never encountered it.

One thing you might have mentioned was the Partition Configuration option, which makes it possible to reserve some space for a separate partition on the flash drive when you flash it with Ventoy. This is great when you use live CD's as you can access the internet and download stuff, save it on the separate partition in case you haven't prepared for something going wrong like having Hirens or whatever. EDIT: As far as I know, since I haven't used Ventoy since version 1.0.78, it's not possible to access the ISO storage part when you boot into a live CD environment - might've changed.
@AskYourComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
I did address this at 11:06, but the reason I chose the folder option vs the separate partition option is because I had difficulty making it work and boot properly. If I had an issue with it, I knew an average user would also. So creating a folder just for personal files (which can also be mapped as a drive letter in Windows, simulating a separate partition), would be a much more user-friendly option ;)
@FlyboyHelosim Жыл бұрын
One thing to be wary of is updating the Ventoy software on the USB stick using the update option in the program's menu. When I did that it wiped all the ISO files from my USB stick and made it so that none of the partitions were recognized by Windows. I had to do a DiskPart format to get the drive back to factory standards and functional again. I think in some cases the Ventoy software has to be updated using that live ISO file that's also available for download on the Ventoy website, although when I last looked into it there wasn't much documentation on it. Since then I just run an older version of Ventoy as am too scared to update it given that I've got about 60Gb of ISO files now on my Ventoy stick and it's slow as molasses writing that much data to even USB 3.0.
@AskYourComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I have not heard of Ventoy deleting anything on the update except the boot partition, which is not where the ISO files should be stored. Maybe that's what happened, you put the ISO files on the boot partition? Is that possible?
@FlyboyHelosim Жыл бұрын
@@AskYourComputerGuy That's what's meant to happen. No I didn't put the ISOs on the boot partition because for me at least that's hidden in Windows.

@FlyboyHelosim Жыл бұрын

The only issue I had with Ventoy was with ISO's that were either UEFI or legacy boot. Mixing the two didn't work so I had to have two Ventoy drives one that was for legacy booting ISOa and one for UEFI booting ISOs. It may not be an issue any longer so I'll give it another try.

@@AskYourComputerGuy I think it may be more of an issue with the BIOS config and the ISOs in Ventoy. Selecting either UEFI or Legacy boot in the BIOS can cause a failure in the opposite one booting depending on which one the ROM uses.

Agreed... had the same problem when I first used Ventoy (with Medicat) a couple weeks ago trying to clone/upgrade a laptop SSD... some of the iso's wouldn't boot until I changed the BIOS to legacy... then others wouldn't work until I changed it back to UEFI. At some point Windows gave errors and I had a mini-heart atack as it looked like something partition related got screwed up. My suggestion is to make notes about each step you try, so you can go back and undo it logically.

The only potential setback with a mult-booting ISO USB stick that contains Windows and Linux installers may be constraints with secure boot, UEFI and legacy-based firmware BIOSes. Some systems may not recognize the USB drive if it's formatted to a system-specific setup. Of course most modern hardware is UEFI but the question is if the installed ISOs will work in both environments. DELL, HP, Lenovo, etc. all seem to be on the same page in respects to pre-boot security constraints. The old days of just tapping a function key, esc or delete to get a USB to boot may be coming to an end, unfortunately...

outdated does not mean obsolete or not workable, I still work on old PC's some people around these parts will dig out their old PC or their Grandad's and want to us it, and of course that means a flash drive such as the 64GB you used here, will not work, so I never get rid of my old tools, "outdated" or not, I was building PC's when many fans here who talk about "outdated" were not born and neither were their PC's. I do think they could all learn a lot by working on older machines the way we did back in the day, the experience of doing it once, twice and two more times is so valuable, as I am sure many of you already know. I find that when someone teaches me something new that is indeed new, I can also teach them some new to them but old to the world, and they do realise how good it is to know. the old tech is still out there and people will still want to use it, technicians should know how to fix it, and no I am not talking about PC techs learning Atari ST or Commodore Amiga, although with home made modern mods even they are are not dead yet.

Hi Scott, Hope all is good. I followed your instructions to a T. I have made my Veytoy USB drive (128 GB) Thought I'd share what I have on the drive - Windows 10 - Windows 11 - Hiren’s BootCD PE - LinixMint (If needed) - FBackUp - VM Ware (Non-Commercial) The reason why I put VM Ware, is That I have some friends and family who may want to try for example Linux now they can. To be honest, I've tried Linux maybe just me but I can't get into it. Not hate to Linux users. Yes, I took your advice about adding software. Thanks again

Been using YUMI for years, but this seems a little more fluid 👍 You can have Ventoy ignore an entire directory, and its subdirectories, by placing an unnamed file with the extension ".ventoyignore" within it (In other words, the file should only have the extension with no name prefixing it). This is useful if you have other .ISO files on the drive that aren't bootable, and will speed up the loading of Ventoy, especially if you have many other files that don't need to be searched by it. (By the way, there a quick registry edit you can do to remove drives showing up multiple times on the Windows Explorer sidebar. Absolutely drives me nuts!)
@AskYourComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
Worth checking into, thanks! 💪

I used YUMI for a bit but one day just stopped booting. Another issue is that it can take longer to write ISO files to the USB stick as it has to actually extract them... which leads to the other issue of having hundreds, if not thousands, of loose files on the disk in a rather convoluted file and folder structure. To remove an ISO you also have to go through an uninstall process, because of aforementioned extracted file and folder structure. Ventoy makes it so much cleaner and simpler, with less likelihood of corruption or user confusion.
@AskYourComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
Good to know. I've heard other people brag about YUMI but wasn't familiar with it. This is good info to be aware of 💪

Couldn't access the C:\ drive (on an HP Win10 Notebook) by using any of these boot images. At best I was able to see the X:\ drive w/ a minimal installation. Linux had no drives under the "mnt" directory. How can you repair or retrieve any files w/ this method, or is that just not possible?

@@AskYourComputerGuy So can you (install &) use EasyBCD from the Ventoy-stick to attempt to repair the BCD/MBR? Is there a better way of doing this? Or all you can do is remove the drive & access it directly w/ a USB hard drive adapter? Any hope to salvage the drive?

What I ended up doing was wiping both my usb jump drives, anad making them both mbr or gpt, and then made sure to change the file system to NTFS. Once I did that I was able to clone. Also prior to cloning I was able to install/add Medicat to the ventoy jump drive....Thanks Scott for showing your video, now I have one drive with all my utilities in one place! :)

QUESTION: Should MemTest86 be put on this Ventoy thing, too?
@AskYourComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
It's a great utility, don't see why not!
@michaelzoran Жыл бұрын
@@AskYourComputerGuy I think I should ask this question a different way. Is it better to have MemTest86 on its own USB card and MemTest64 on its own USB card so that each of these types of small apps has its own small USB card? Or can they all be put on one USB card to boot from? The reason I'm asking is because I have an 11-year-old Dell computer that runs in "Legacy" mode rather than UEFI. This laptop no longer has a DVD drive that works internally. Now, it has an external Blu-ray drive via USB. In BIOS, regardless of whether I select DVD or USB, the disc with MemTest86 on it will not run for some reason. So, this is why I'm wondering if it is better to have all those apps on one USB card or make it so each app has its own USB card.
@AskYourComputerGuy Жыл бұрын
@michaelzoran I don't see any downside to running them off of one usb drive 👍

@@AskYourComputerGuy, I have a Dell Latitude 6420. The battery it had that was relatively new stopped working last week. The connection was acknowledged, and it gradually ran out of power; however, the battery would never charge again. So, I bought a new battery. The new battery started out at 80%. The connection was acknowledged, but the new battery would not charge. Instead, the new battery simply ran out of power the way the old battery did. This made me think the batteries were not the problem. I read possible causes such as viruses and malware, but I don't think that is the problem. I've used Microsoft Defender, MalwareBytes, and a couple others. All of them say there are no viruses. I read about how you should go to Device Manager and use the tricks for reinstalling the driver. And I used the trick of selecting "Uninstall," and then removing the battery and unplugging the laptop, and then reiinstalling the driver. None of that worked. I also used the "chkdsk" and "sfc /scannow" and ""Restore Health" stuff. I even used a USB card to do reinstall of Windows 10 Pro so I could keep all my apps and files. But, nothing allows the battery to be charged. The connection is a bit "loose" in back, so perhaps that is why. But, the connection still powers the laptop without the battery connected. One thing that is very unusual is the computer is now very slow at random times. Sometimes it might be okay, but other times apps and even Chrome will take a super looooong time to work. This makes me wonder if the CPU is not properly being powered as a result of a "loose" connection - if that is possible. I also used System Restore to go back in time to before Updates were installed. But that didn't work. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think the lack of battery recharging and the slow CPU at random times could both be caused by a "loose" connection of the AC Adapter?
