I'm sorry, but even after watching the video, I don't really get why him waking up early is such a big deal. He still lost *15 years* of his life. He missed out on watching his friends grow and a potential relationship with a woman who was _actually his age._ He still has no middle school OR high school degrees. How much would him waking up later have effected the outcome of the story besides delaying it? As you said, the main reason he wasn't successful wasn't really because he was "too old," but he was too afraid to dig deep inside himself to find truly inspiring, creative stories. The changes he would have made to his life would have been made regardless of when he woke up. If waking up a bedridden husk who needs to go through months of physical therapy 3 years younger than when I started having missed out on the entirety of my adolescence is "wish fulfillment," then I don't think I want that wish granted. It's as if this video was made under the impression that he woke up 3 years earlier in his original timeline, and thus got to redo the things in his adulthood he regretted. But that's a really odd take and objectively not true. He has woken up in a completely different timeline because he saved those girls. He is in totally uncharted territory. He doesn't really have a "reunion" with Airi, because in this timeline, that end scene is the first time they ever meet. The respect and trust she had in him as a friend at the pizza shop no longer exists, because it never happened, so he'll have to start from scratch.

This means that he woke up three years prior to the year that we first see him in the original timeline, so this also means that everyone and everything is also three years younger. Yes, by saving those kids, he altered the entire timeline, so the events in the present prior to his final jump back to his childhood technically never happened. He does retain (or rather regain) the memories of his original timeline though, but everything in the real world developed completely differently. Because he was put in a coma, however, he didn't get to relive his entire adolescence, and we don't know if his power would have made him do that, or would have jumped him forward into the new timeline with new memories of the life he would have led after altering the timeline. For example, he never worked in the pizza shop in the new timeline because he was in a coma during that time and the events that lead him to that job never happened in this timeline. Long story short, he essentially knows everything that we, the viewers, know.

I completetly agree the video objectively discards that satoru relived his past to find a new meaning in himself, by eliminating the things that clouded his mind. Him waking up after 15 years isn't a revival he was in a different state for those years affecting all the people around him, he has detached himself from his tragic past and has become a better person because of it. Waking up at 26 has no relevance to him being "too old" and him working at a pizza shop and Airi is irrelevant all he has left his the knowledge that they are dependable people. Highlighted by his mom he is "an adult now" regardless of minor age gaps. He has successfully became "something" and beaten yashiro's sadistic egocentric persona with his own, due to finding his own and expressing it to other leaving no strings attached to yashiro.

i mean i personally feel like him getting those 3 years back gave him the chance to fulfil his own dream. by living in his past he was able to do what he was scared to do in the real world. he dug DEEP into himself and changed himself as a character. it was development. he learned to be more outgoing, saved murders from happening, and learned a lot about himself and his past too. the manager guy at the shonen job even told satoru his age (29) was too old for their magazine in the first episode. with the few years he got back after his coma, he was able to create a story that the same guy told him was amazing, and he made it in the business. he was congratulated for one of his animes getting some sort of recognition award. by 2010 (4 years after when the show first started) he was the boss of people still working for shonen, and he crossed paths with airi again. she also achieved her dream of being a photographer, which she never told satoru once again, in the first episode. by digging deep into himself and changing/learning things about himself, he was able to open up AND help to achieve his own goal and potentially affect someone else's goal to also be achieved (airis), but thats just my view on it :>

exactly, i was so shocked when kayo walked in with a baby, i was like wtf how did she have sex with satoru while he was in a coma, thats kind of creepy, but it turns out his friend who i thought was a girl for half the show snagged her while he was in a coma. Airi was a really good character but as much as they focused on building cute moments between satoru and kayo and him saving her i thought for sure they would end up together at the end of the show.. :(

I kind of agree with you questioning satoru waking up 3 year younger, however, if he wakes up from coma at 29 again, isnt his mother getting murdered again???? He NEEDS to wake up before 2006 to deal with his old sensei and save mom. Also, near the end of the episode 12, radio announced 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic is starting soon. So my take is satoru woke up in 2003, dealt with sensei, moved on with life, became successful as a manga artist, then eventually reunited with 21-year-old Airi in 2010 at the age of 33

His mother is only murdered because she just happened to see the killer attempt to abduct a small girl in a parking lot while shopping with Satoru at the start of the anime during the original timeline. For all intents and purposes, that timeline no longer exists, or in other words, it was "Erased" by his efforts in the past. There is no longer a reason for Sachiko to be targeted. So Satoru waking up at 29 would be no different than when he woke up at 26.

@@yourstruly33They didn't know each other. Well Satoru knew Airi from his alternative life, but for all intents and purposes it was the first time Airi met Satoru in the new timeline. In relation to the anime. The manga is a different story. As to why they met, it was likely meant to be a fated meeting. No matter what, the universe apparently intended for the two to meet, regardless. It was destiny. In addition, Satoru's reaction to meeting Airi in his new life was supposed to be when he realized he actually cared for the girl. Maybe even loved her.This supports the whole "they were soulmates" thing the creator was going for.

I like the ending. He doesn’t have this hole in his heart. He’s now able to dig deeper into himself. The future we see earlier is no longer relevant. He wasn’t a success not because he was 29, but because he wasn’t able to tell a story that represented the parts of him deep down. Since he changed the past, his present is now in the hospital. Waking up three years earlier isn’t a cop out to me, it signifies that times have changed. Him waking up three years early is what happens based on the actions of the past

He’s going to need those 3 years just to play catch up on relationships he missed out on for the past 15. Not to mention recovering from his coma. Plus there’s the divine intervention part of it, like when the butterfly caught his attention long enough for him to meet Airi in the new timeline. God didn’t have to intervene with the butterfly at that point because there was no murder going to happen, but They did anyway simply to give him a better life. Letting him wake up 3 years earlier could also be seen as an extension of that theme.

Though he is younger I’m pretty sure the author set rules for the power of revival, the way it’s meant to work is you are given a chance to save someone else and the power isn’t meant as a power for personal benefit instead is used to save others in a fatal way. If he successfully saves that persons life, he in turn has to live out the remainder of his life from that moment of which he saves them or was sent back to, but if he fails is sent back to the reality his was at before but changes to the timeline are still made assuming his situation would be the same for the time after he failed

I got to say i didn't see why people wanted Kayo and Satoru together because through the whole show he was all like "Stop your 29" when he saw that kayo was cute and wanted to be with her but think he get kidnapped and drowned only to go in a coma for 15 years man. i wouldn't want someone who i saved to want to date me yea i like her but it basically a reward and his reward was seeing her alive and smiling 2. The ending was really good and i didn't mine the whole part or Airi because if it wasn't for her he wouldn't have tired to hard to save the girls so seeing them meeting again even though he knows her and she doesn't know him is kind of wholesome and honestly i see them being to together more than him and Kayo 3. Also about the ending it really gives the feeling that he won he beat the killer and saved everyone not just the girls or his mom but himself he is no longer the kid that doesn't talk to people. he is also has his whole life together him waking up 15 years later and younger seem better than him being 29 because it shows he can still grow up not be so down on himself

Honestly I've always thought of the theme as "strong changes require strong actions." For example the first time he went back in time, he still followed social protocol and ended up changing nothing. It was only when he had the guts to make impactful actions that it resulted in any meaningful impact to the future.

Maybe I am missing something, but it seems like you may be overstating how big of deal his coming back 3 years earlier is. I think the theme of Redemption is far more pertinent than regret. Regret is his prison, but losing 15 years of life to a coma is no small sacrifice. It is a consequence that could have easily derailed everything that he fought so hard to win back. When he resolutely decides to ramp up his rehab and defiantly tells his mother that he will be living life to the fullest from now on, they are markers that show he must continue to fight for a better future. Plus, while I disagree with the hate that the series gets for not allowing him to be with Kayo, it is obviously a sacrifice that he makes as a result of his actions.

I kinda like the theme of “dig deeper” satoru dug so deep to get so many of his friends how of a hole... but the one person he couldn’t save was himself and at the end when his friends help him get rid of Yashiro that’s shows that his friends helped him get out. Im still angry that Kayo and Satoru never got together but there’s small hints that shows that Hiromi and Kayos relationship was building (reading books on the bus and staying with satoru while he was in a coma) but in the end Kayo is happy and satoru’s mom is not dead. Which brings us back to how satoru was digging deeper to stop his friends from being erased and forgotten

I def see the point you’re making about devaluing the lessons from throughout the series. I’m gonna go ahead and assume waking up at 26 was not only for dealing with the teacher but also for physical therapy and readjustment so that he could be on equal footing when he was 29. Besides his time in the hospital he’d also have to go through all the proper channels to cover any schooling he still needed (or to at least prove he didn’t need the schooling). Get some kind of job and his own place set. And then get come up with his stories, draw them out, get small payoffs but mainly rejections. I just feel like there’s a lot he’d have had to deal with that would have set him back if he had awakened at 29, vs waking up at 26 gives him time to catch up. just finish rewatching the anime with my friend yesterday and at the time i don't really get why i like this anime so much. but i guess it's because the element of escapism. this anime allow me to fulfill the thought of rewinding time and making things right. the whole plotline is to remind us and bring us back to reality. we can't turn back time and change the things we do wrong like satoru and the whole plot in this anime but, we still have time to make things right in our life. even if it seems like it's too late. that's what i get after rewatching it again.

Well i don’t think he wake up being unsuccessful. Now he has more friends that are willing to help him accomplish what he wanted which was to catch the killer. His mindset is different and that’s a plus. He wakes up 15 years before because the killer is just still on the lose. Which means that he still has a chance to change his reality, that’s why he doesn’t return to the original time line. The killer gets caught and now his altered reality becomes his actual reality and this occurs from the very beginning of the show; once he discovers or solves the wrong thing he stays in that time. Now because he has a different mindset and he made friends is that he was able to catch the killer. And it happens that being more opened and thinking differently it in such Age, it allowed him to have a career in manga.

Honestly I didnt even catch the age thing when I first watched it and I figured out who the killer was like 3 episodes in. I dont think its a big deal time travel stuff is messy. Because Satoru's gone back and the timeline for him personally has been altered so much as a result of being in the coma it makes sense for him to experience everything that happens from the time Satoru's out of the coma, and us a the audience to see what happened. It would be random if hes been out of the coma for 3 years jumping to the point in time he goes back in and we dont see Satoru's experiences between then. It would also feel weird having him come out of the coma at that exact point in the timeline after he went back. I think it still give Satoru hardship he has ALOT to catch up on middle school, high school, university. Will likely be in a similar situation except hes wrong as person though out the events in the show.

I am so much invested in their bonding (satoru and kayo) that i wanted them to end up together and y'k some people be saying that Satoru and Kayo didn't have any romantic feelings but if you watched the anime carefully you would've noticed that in one of the episodes, before Satoru and Kenya leaving the bus, they both called her Kayo after that they both were embarrassed and Kenya said he would call her Hina and only Satoru deserves to call her 'Kayo' and at school Satoru unknowing said loudly that Kayo had a pretty face. Also, Satoru was in coma since he time travelled 18 yrs back when he was in elementary school so when he woke up he must be 25-26, the same as Kayo. So they could be in a relationship? When Kayo cane to the room with her baby I literally thought they had sex while he was in coma 😭 and was heartbroken when found out the truth. The times they spent together were so sweet i can't seem to forget. I am saying all this cuz it's been on my mind since yesterday. I completed the whole anime in one sitting. ❤

yea the anime was good. regarding the ending I don't really care as much as I think kayo if rescued has to make her own choices. to me it seems similiar to how many characters in speedgrapher mistake the love of an adoptive father for a girlfriend one. for airi while it is true that she had him in mind he was insecure about her and found out about her genuine interest by chance due to bad luck. if the chain of events didn't happen he wouldn't have learnt to trust her the way he did in the end thus ending up dying alone since we know he didn't really have that many ppl to call friends at that time. he was a loner, just not at the exposed risk as kayo.

Just because she lived her life doesn't mean she's any less grateful for all that Satouru (probably spelled his name wrong) has done. I do kinda agree that it’s dumb that they didn’t just make him the same age but I disagree in the fact that it contradicts the theme. The theme through the whole anime was more that he can change things that he regrets just through the help of his friends and I do think the ending reflected that… A lot of the aspects of eraser’s themes are unrealistic because it’s no like anyone can just get a redo. But it was satisfying to watch a show about it because I always sometimes just wish I could just go back lol. And it inspires to try to be more confident and go for things so you don’t regret things and to cherish the people around you. So the show is what is if you take that out of it..

In this timeline Airi wasn't born yet, because she's 17 in 2006, means 1 year after in this timeline Airi was born (Airi was born in 1989) > Saturo woke up from the coma in year 2003, he's 25 years old, while Airi is 14 (they met each other when Airi help him about the guys secretly taking pic of him) > In the finale, Saturo reunite with Airi in year 2012, means Saturo is 35 years old, and Airi is 23 years old (seriously, in both manga and anime, they made Airi look so young for a 23 y.o) For both Airi and Saturo, at the beginning, each other was just a workmate to a friend, to someone who believe in them, someone who made a great influence for them and someone they can trust. And then we had an open ending for Saturo and Airi, we seen them reuniting, we never know what happened to them next, but this hints that they became friends until them, and there's also the possibility that they end up with each other. btw, I'm someone who finished the manga and referring to it, I haven't watched the adaptation yet, and they said the anime and manga has major differences*

smh all that emotional buildup between Satoru and Kayo, it was not a "we're good friends" kinda buildup, it was "we're literally meant to be lovers" kinda buildup. But what was it that Satoru said? Sometimes when he successfully fulfills the purpose of his revivals? That something bad happened to him? Yeah, looks like the ultimate bad thing that happened to him was his girl got stolen by his best friend. This outcome made me die inside, and made the empty feeling I got from watching a (mostly) great drama anime even worse. I thought that the deadness inside me after finishing this for the first time was because I was never gonna find something so good again, but instead I now realize the deadness inside me is because I'm rightfully dissapointed, broken, and ruined by the ending. 4.5/5 not bad just didn't like the ending
