​@@reponrepnation3004 No. Imagine the local Mean Sea Level pressure is 30.02"; 1" difference = 1000'. The standard atmosphere which is used in the US above 18,000' is 29.92", and is referred to as FL 180 (to indicate use of the standard datum) In this case the datum zero is 100' above sea level. If you freeze time and instantly turn the knob clockwise to reach 29.92" the pressure indicated in the window will decrease 0.1" and the needle will go anticlockwise by 100'. So if the local pressure is greater than standard, the true altitude is greater than that indicated, and vice versa.

ERAU = Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. They started as a flight school with their roots in the 1920's (still active), but they are a STEM-oriented University with many other degree opportunities other than traditional pilot. Many graduates go on to work in Aviation related industries. Fun fact, JFK learned to fly at Embry-Riddle.

This takes me back. Years ago I had to animate an altimeter for the RNZAF, for student pilot training. Being given schematic drawings and being asked to produce a working animation is always a great learning experience, and prompts a lot of research. What's not mentioned is the amazing and minute planetary gearbox that allows the needle to rotate so much relative to the tiny amount of movement generated by the expanding and contracting wafers.

I though of the acronym “CLAPS VAA” to help me remember this. “CL” is calibrated leak and goes with v (vsi), “A” is aneroid wafer and goes with a (altimeter), “PS” is pitot static and goes with a (airspeed). All you have to remember is that the last a is airspeed since it’s the only instrument that uses the pitot tube. Hope that helped!

Interesting video, even though I don't fly airplanes. Knowing how those parts operate must also be helpful in any situation where those instruments malfunction. For example if the Pitot tube gets frozen, the airspeed indicator will read zero. So then you can troubleshoot that problem by having the heater turned on the tube.

Amazing video, everyone references it at my flight school. Question for VSI: I understand that during a climb, the casing has higher pressure (more air) than the pressure in diaphragm. Why does the high pressure casing “squeeze the diaphragm and make the VSI read a climb?” @6:25 I’m having trouble making sense of that because for the Altimeter, at lower altitudes, the high pressure casing squeezes the wafer, which reads a descent in altitude. So why is it that the high pressure casing contracts the diaphragm of the VSI and reads a climb, not a descent? Can someone explain this part to me? Hope my question makes sense, thank you in advance 😊
