Such an audacious gambler Erebus was that he had to teleport away from his duel with Kharn the moment he realized he was going to die.

But he didn't die. He was sent to Calth to die as well by Lorgar, but he lived because he secretly learned the art of opening pathways in the warp. He is a gambler who likes to have an ace up his sleeve. The scene where Kharn beats him is very cathartic, but ultimately Erebus doesn't care. He got close to a very dangerous scorpion, hurt him, and survived his sting, painful and humiliating as it was.

Because at that time Erebus knew he was meaningless. During the Heresy he viewed himself as an orchestrator of the whole civil war. He believed to be too important to risk his life like that, let alone let himself be killed. And he was partly right. He played a key role in Heresy

40k has such a cast of characters, big and small. Many of them are evil. Some of those didn't start out evil; some suffered as children, some were changed later in life by hardship and loss, others made mistakes that took them down a dark path... and then there's Erebus. Bad from the start, and he only got worse, because he knew how to hide it.

Great man, erebus. Saw what he wanted and took it like a man. Not a child soldier in big boi clothes like 99% of astartes. Saw how easy it was to bend primarchs to his will, and some things were gambles like signus prime. He was in the game not quarterbacking it but doing it. Taking the amethane and rigging horus friend Timba into killing horus. He was dead when they placed him in the davin temple. Only the pantheon gave his body life again. Later when trying fight chaos god in the trances he went in Malenhurst came into the warp and told horus you can't be the master of chaos you made a deal with them, your soul is theres. Russ's strike with the emperors spear briefly drive the 4 from horus but without chaos gods that wound would not heal.
