the name "Nyx" I think refers to a nothing - a cancellation , a void >> as in not 'light' > Night , as opposed to "day" >>> so by that contrast perhaps Erebus can be seen more clearly as personifying , the darkness .. and all things that exist in that 'realm' .. rather than the negation aspect of Nyx > seeing as Nyx is only carrying Erebus's curtain of darkness due to marriage >> and the negation aspect perhaps makes more sense when you see one of the children of them both is the personification of "day" or daylight , which is kind of the 'negation' of darkness **** or maybe I'm completely wrong ? - it's just a theory

As with most primordial deities of Greek mythology, Erebus represents a rather abstract concept, or a facet of the natural world. Those "gods" *weren't really worshiped* (with temples, animal sacrifices etc.), and don't really participate in mythological stories. They are just mentioned as the origin of other deities, who also personify (somewhat less) abstract concepts. Rather poetic, IMO :)

Because Erebus is a personification, a literal part of existence. He isn't the God of darkness, he IS darkness. The Protogenoi are beings that represent an era before order, when Chaos was still awake (I guess); they cannot be good nor evil, as they uphold the very universe. The reason why Nyx protected her son, Hypnos, from Zeus is because Hypnos IS sleep, dreams, and all that. If he were to die, a fabric of the reality would die. Thus disrupting the order.

I've pasted it below for those who've never read it, enjoy! I looked on that prophetic land Where, manifested by their powers, Presences perfected stand Whom night and day no more command With shine and shadow of earthly hours. I saw them. Numberless they stood Half-way toward heaven, that men might m ark The grandeur of their ghostlihood Burning divinely on the dark. Names had they none. Through spirit alone They triumphed, the makers of mankind, Whose robes like flames were round them blown By winds which raved from the unknown Erebus of earth's ancestral mind. What I like to think, and it’s a part of something I’m writing, is Erebus was the original god of the underworld. He and Nyx created it to act as a retreat when day came and to judge the souls of humans. When the titanomachy came to an end, Hades came to underworld and explained that since he drew the shortest straw he was to rule the underworld. Erebus was weary of this but decided to allow Hades to live in the underworld as long as he (Hades) remains respectful to Erebus and Nyx. That’s what I have at least.

I’m writing a story based around gods and I was wondering what makes the Primodials different from the other gods. From what I read on myths including those form other cultures from the god’s that could be considered the same, it almost always sound like the Primordials are a completely different class of beings from gods and mortals to the point that they seem to be neutral most of the time and can only be defeated by clever trickery or help from another one of their kind. If I remember correctly Zeus would hunt one Nyx’s sons down for forcing him to fall asleep during something important or for embarrassing him but stopped because the son would always run into Nyx’s realm because he feared angering Nyx and entering her home without permission would only end in his death or something far worse.

We do fear the first, as Carbon and Oxygen are required to live, they are essential part of the world, while Fire is a manifestation/result of their interactions, which can be both useful and dangerous. And so, we fear the first, while only slightly realizing that those two basis exist. In the same ways, Gods and similar do interact with humans, and so they were respected and feared. But neither humans or Gods would have existed if the Primordials weren't a thing. In our modern view, it's the same for us with other things. I do not fear the nuclear forces at the basis of the atoms, I fear humans meddling with them and creating nuclear explosions.

@@Hyperversum3 So basically, Primordials are reality incarnate....Neat but come one, I like greek mythology and all but in my honest opinion. Shouldn't the stronger gods be the ones who rule the cosmos?? Especially if the mortals have you to thank instead of your gandson claiming to rule your domain.

@@lionspride4821 not if they don't want to rule. The primordial don't care what happens. Only Gaia gets involved and even then she ends up causing a lot of problems rather than helping out of spite for the gods(most were descended from her so the gods obviously got it all from her and the other primordial uranus). They all just exist and lay the foundation for other stuff to exist on them but they don't do much but exist. They are basically locked in place. Gaia for example can't actually fight or do anything to the gods so she sends or creates others who can.
