Eren's Founding Titan design has got to be the best character design from an anime I've seen, period. So much symbolism and yet makes SO MUCH SENSE from the narrative perspective as well. Symbolism - Eren's massive rib cage looks like a giant bird cage. Obviously, Eren = Bird seeking freedom from a cage has been symbolism that we've been exposed to for the entire series. And yet, Eren himself is dangling like a marionette on the side of the birdcage, tied to it with strings of destiny - all he ever wanted to is freedom, but even now that he has all the power in the world he is still nothing more than destiny's pawn, tied to his fate, unable to fully leave the cage, following him everywhere and restraining him like a massive shadow. Narrative - This titan is the true form of Hallucigenia. Hallucigenia is a worm that has no creativity on its own, it was always dependent on Ymir for the titan designs from the very start. Now that Ymir is free and she refuses to make any more titans, Eren's Founding has to look pretty much like a default form that would be more natural to the Hallucigenia worm - so it just replicates itself, and combines it with a human form in a weird, mutated way. This is why Eren also looks like a giant, massive worm walking on hundreds of legs. It's perfect. Saying THIS MUCH to your audience/readers through a transformation... Isayama is a freakin genius. I mean every other anime just makes their characters more cool looking, buff or changes their hair color... AOT really is on another level with its storytelling.
@ddiiaannaa64352 жыл бұрын
It is also worth mentioning Scandinavian mythology, from where Isayama drew his inspiration (the ancestor of Ymir, Yggdrasil => Paths, 9 worlds=>9 Titans, 3 walls=>3 levels of Yggdrasil, Ragnarok=> Rumbling, etc.). The titan form of Founder Eren is a Naglfar- a ship made of nails/bones of the dead, going to the last battle against the aces (gods).Eren is a huge ship made of bones

are you kidding? this story is fucking bullshit! Eren Jaeger is a walking grandfather paradox, alternate dimensional nonsense out of nowhere\

@@spookytown7963 then explain 1) how ymir ended up in the alternate dimension upon death, and 2) how anything she does in that place is supposed to affect the real world. When your story contains fictional science, magic, etc, the more important to the story it is, the more the story suffers if you don't properly explain how it works. Consider Gandalf's magic vs Harry Potter magic. The former can pull off random bullshit with very little explanation, but it's fine because it's not super important to the plot. Harry Potter's universe utterly relies on magic as a storytelling engine, so it's very clearly defined. Attack on Titan suffers as a story because it just pulls new bullshit out again and again rather than convincingly explain the stuff they already introduced.

One of the scariest things about the rumbling is that Eren's transformation was SO fast that the rest of body separated from his head hadn't even completely fell to the ground. If you want to see it 0:08

Fun fact (A little spoiler) As the centipede acquires Eren's head, it also captures Zeke who then starts the Rumbling, because Zeke has the Royal's blood who can activate the power of the Founding Titan. Meaning that Zeke not only survived the wall collapse but he is inside Eren's Titan.

The defining feature of Eren’s Founding Titan is a huge, snaking spine. This look is because Eren was decapitated by Gabi when he transformed, which caused the spine to grow abnormally so it could reconnect his body.

My favorite part about this transformation is the soundtrack. As soon as the camera cuts from Ymir's face, we get this menacing sounding string, and you instantly think "This doesnt sound like a hero just won, this sounds like a villain is just getting started" Then the INTSANT the transformation happens, the sky turns a blistering red and you think "Uh oh, I dont think Eren is the good guy"
