The Holton SuperBone is very easy and comfortable to handle and play with the ERGObone trombone support

I started playing trombone a couple months ago (a Conn Director straight tenor, from 1965, bought on eBay). I'm not a big muscular fellow, so I notice the weight of it, especially whiling using a practice mute at home. I removed the counterweight which helps a little, but I find myself sitting with my knee raised, upon which I prop the bell when I'm home practicing. During my lessons I don't use the mute, so I sit normally to play. Playing is a bit rough on my left hand, and the ridges on the bracing bars don't help. Therefore, I believe the ERGObone is exactly what I need to get, the complete set for both sitting and standing. I've wondered how heavy the instruments having the F-trigger weigh, with all that additional "plumbing"! Yes, I agree the superbone is a marvelous instrument.

Judging by comments I see, I suspect us trumpet players, or as in my case, former trumpet players, may find this more interesting than trombone players. This would be great for playing blues, raga based stuff, and just general innovative wackiness.

For that, a valve trombone is more interesting. While it is true that the superbone gives you the option of both, there's no point in getting it if you don't plan on using both. It also doesn't help that it's a quite rare instrument that you're not getting one for less than 5k. If you search up "James Morrison superbone" you should find a video about the intended use of the superbone if you're interested.

Excellent idea, far superior to my crutch approach which only works seated for short periods of time. I love the horn, but it's heavy, twice the weight of normal trombone or valve trombone. I therefore tend to use only the slide or valves with my right hand.

Its a valve/slide trombone better known as a super bone. They're special because they have both.

Theres several different ways you can combine them, whether its adding slide techiques to valve pieces, or vice versa, or you can simply choose to play in a different key up to an augmented fifth down from Bb. Say i decide to play the slide but with the instrument in G, i would simply hold down third valve and play with the slide. Say i wanted to play the valves in the key of F, bring the slide out to sixth and use Valves. Granted, the intonation of each interval would change, and make it a lot more interesting to try and keep in tune, but those are a few examples.

It's probably just a large bore tenor. But the need for a bass superbone is irrelevant because if you put a bigger mouthpiece like a 1 1/2 G on your range would be very similar to that of a bass trombone. In fact you could just use the valves like triggers.
@MDeadcloud
@MDeadcloud Жыл бұрын
It's most definitely a large bore tenor. However, you would not be able to get a similar range to a bass bone. The larger bore size in bass bones (.562-.563 inches compared to .547) is quite signigicant. Additionally, the smaller bell size would make it sound weak in bass range, and while the piston valves would in theory work, the lowest key you could put the instrument in is E, meaning the lowest note you'd be able to reach without going into pedals is C2. You'd only be losing 1 note, but given all of the above problems, it's not really useable as a bass.

i believe that such trombone is the one feature in this video. if you look at the size of the bell, it is evident that it is somewhat larger than a straight tenor for instance.

Hello Jordan, it is much of a personal feeling. One might like the harness better, even when playing sitting down. Others prefer the support tube. Nobody can tell to someone which one he or she might like best!

@joukoantere
@joukoantere 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks for your question! I cannot be sure whether that would be possible. I only have seen it in photos and videos, I should get one in my hands and test but I do not know anyone around here who had that instrument. Perhaps there would be change to adjust the ERGObone for that too, but I cannot guarantee.

Does the ring finger push the first valve and the index push the third?
@BisquiteCat
@BisquiteCat 8 жыл бұрын
You play the valves with your left hand to the third valve should be ring finger. Just because it's used with the left hand does not mean the fingerings are inverted.

No hate but unless your disabled in some way, if you can’t carry a trombone long enough to play a concert, you probably should try something else besides buying a stand
@ERGObrass

Of course most players can hold the trombone with the constant static tension. However, is that really rational to play having the tension always in your left hand, wrist, arm and shoulder..? Less tensions in upper body -> more efficent breathing, and many other positive effects. Can you think any positive effects the weight gives you, even if it is possible to tolerate the weight?

This isn't necessary. See... There's these things that trombone players have called arms, and they learn how to use em really freakin' well. The only need to have more tubing and some sort of valve system is the same need of bass trombonists; hit lower notes with more ease.
