What a fantastic interview. Deep respect and admiration for Eric Avery's commitment to artistic integrity. He is accurate is his summation to the "people that were there in 91" & in my case earlier. Jane's was the sound track to my LA youth. We have moved on but listening to the old albums or watching early footage brings back that dynamic surge of energy & I am transported in time. JA never did get recognized for the pivotal band they were & the path they paved for so many to follow in their wake. Their early body of work speaks for itself. Too bad money & ego can be the death of true art...

Oh, yes they are. Perry turned into the guy he used to hate. How ironic.

A weird part of me didn't want to watch this. I knew that this would be like a funeral speech for Jane's... and it is. For so long I was so frustrated with every lame album Jane's would put out after Ritual. Why could they not re-capture the magic? I'd watch the old live footage and no, it wasn't my imagination, they were the greatest band in the world for a period of time. I'm so happy that Eric's musical integrity and description of the 'comeback' really allows me to be a peace with it. Its such a shame at what Perry has become... in many ways, I don't even understand it. How could someone so amazing, creative, and controversial turn into what he is today. It just makes me sad. Kind of reminds me of watching Mike Tyson fight after you knew he was done. You wanted him to rekindle the craziness and each time you were deeply deflated. Thanks for doing these interviews, Eric and Xiola.org. It puts everything in perfect and logical perspective.

Nothing can last forever! Even if they still got Eric, they would probably still making music not so great, comparing with the first albuns. Time and age are a bitch.

I'm glad you hung in there till the Perth show Eric. I was so excited to see Jane's with you back on bass. It was a fantastic show. I hope I get to see you again when Dave is ready to rejoin you on tour. It's really good to get your insights into the whole thing. Thanks for doing this!

This whole interview is great! Was so glad to see the NINJA tour bc all the diehard Janes fans KNEW it would be the last tour with Eric & also why it was so important to see him. Lots of us still expect great music from Janes & I think most of us will take what we can get! I've been with you since 1990 & have 3rd row for Austin this May. I have no idea who they have on bass now?!? Thank you for your amazing work Eric & for going back to the circus for us 1 more time. You would for us and I wou

He had me with 2 points: didnt want to play a paycheck show & wearing a Basquiat shirt. A killer musician trying to keep it real. Thank u for sharing this interview.

It really comes through this interview that Eric has finally gotten his head around the whole circus that follows Jane's Addiction. Since the first time I heard them the bass was the stand out vibe in the band, at the fore, unlike most bass guitars that understudy lead guitarists. They had depth at a time when most music didn't. I have always attributed a large part of that to Eric Avery. Jane's simply don't sound the same without him. Only Perry and Eric really know what's going on between Perry and Eric. Here, I listen to a version of events from a man who passionately cares about his art, whether it be with Jane's or anyone else. He certainly paints the picture of the established members (mainly Perry) being scared of what made them great in the first place; pushing boundaries. I was sad to see the photos of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame pictures with Chris Chaney instead of Eric for the reasons I lost above. Ultimately you have two genuinely great artists who just clash as people. But for us out there in the world, we have two albums where that clash gifted us with two of the best albums I've ever heard. Peace and love.

I wonder in 2022 what Eric thinks about Perry and his bandmates and the entire situation now that he's back and on tour with them?

Great introspective look at Eric's experience with Jane's, Down to earth & honest about it... I saw the Sydney show & could see the lack of band chemistry on stage... It's a shame how someone's over inflated ego could blind them from the creativity they once wielded (I'm referring to Perry) Jane's Addiction was at one time, one of the most creative & influential bands of all time... Their latest material is very lackluster & has lost the spiritual nature of their brilliance...

I flew across Australia to see Janes in Sydney and whilst i fufilled a dream it was so sad to see my favourite band turn out a shadow of itself (perry's voice was way under par) - i think eric sums it up here and says we early fans have moved on - especially after The Great Esape Artist which is really devoid of anything that resembles the creativity of the ritual, XXX or Nothing Shocking. I don't think for one second Eric A has his own part to play in not letting Jane's be what it could be with the original lineup but that's life, Martyn Le Noble coule have been a greta replacement had Perry not farked him over as well. RIP janes & porno's for pyros - you were the best.

Such integrity is real good to see, I loved Jane's with Eric on bass, judging by Eric's words there could have been some more great albums with the original four but Perry put pay to that.

Listen up kiddies out there in Musicland... ^ This Man, Eric Avery is a musical Genius! Eric Avery is the "Mingus of Indie Music". Most "Innovative: Players of the Past 75 Years are as Follow... James Jamerson Charles Mingus Jaco Pastorius Bernard Edwards Larry Graham Eric Avery Jack Bruce Willie Weeks Paul Chambers Peter Hook Gary "Mani" Mounfield These are the foundations of Bass. There are many great ones but these are all you need if you want to get going. Start here and find the rest. (Yes, I did leave out Paul McCartney...He's a great songwriter!) Honorable Mention to Kim Deal, Cliff Burton, Geddy Lee, Jack Casady, John Deacon and Geezer Butler... * John Paul Jones was a great musician.

It's sad that what he said about the NINJA tour came true. NIN absolutely blew Jane's off the stage the night I saw it. Eric and Steven were solid but the others...not so much. Very disappointing. Why he left is legit. Artistic integrity. Their shelf life was 5 years and that was it. Unlike Tool who just put out their best work. Eric A thanks for having a conscience and not wanting to put out sub par music. Much respect!

Compelled to opine one last time. Help Wanted is the BEST post-Ritual release any of the boys ever created. For real. That said, I will always be curious about what the original four might conjure.

Love the band. Eric's demise was in his own words wanted to make the experience "better". He answered his own question. Nobody is expecting them to surpass '91. JA are plenty good as is.

It's really convenient for Eric to claim artistic purity and cash those checks from the "others" selling out 😉

Sure but those other acts were not his own. And he didn't get along with Perry. Jane's had become a shallow image/money train and he didn't want it.

And I'm sure the Jane's members (that's what "others" referred to) no longer made much cash on album sales. So, yeah, easy for him to claim purity.
