Know the ledge... What Rakim was basically saying is do you have the "Knowledge" of certain situations dealing with the streets. Get it.. Know the ledge= Knowledge

At the time, I interpreted it as knowing your limits. It's like a fork in the road. If you go left, you'll live a life of crime. If you go right, you'll be on a righteous path.

@@JD-fb6rw Well it's kind of like that if you go left it's jail, a wooden suit or a wheelchair but if you go right it's freedom, taxes, family and a different type of wooden suit.

Anything before Two Thousand was 3 to Four verses. And the track was at least 3 to 4 minutes long. That is a real Hip Hop track. Those verses make Classics.

This song is diected to the movie and doesn't necessarily depict rakim himself. Its in the mind of what Quincy Jones told Micheal Jackson " A song must tell a story".
Now this is a super classic song. You gotta listen to Ces Cru ft Tech N9ne - Juice. A remake of this song

Back then the DJ was the artist and the MC was just the hype man but the MC started getting clever with the words on the mic and of course we started paying more attention to the MC now the DJ's obsolete

It’s not where you’re from it’s where you at. This is a RAKIM verse. But you keep saying “A NY Thing” these things happen in every Hood and every City. Opps, thinking you’re untouchable, and Caught Slippin’. It Happens.
