Nice list. Mine would have included The Road to Escondido, Pilgrim, and There’s One In Every Crowd. I know there’s very little love out there for TOIEC and I don’t care. (I guess the title is appropriate). After all these years I still enjoy listening to it. The Give Me Strength vinyl box set is one of my prized possessions.

Including From the Cradle is a great choice, in my opinion the best blues album ever; awesome musicians essentially live, wonderfully enriching all those old blues songs with more modern technology and techniques.

Superb isn't it, he really sounded like a man with a new lease of life on that album.

I appreciate the approach you took to include the complete Clapton catalogue for consideration because I always found his best work was when he was not the front man. I disagree on ranking any of the pure blues albums so high, it always makes me go to the ones he drew from, i.e. Albert King and Otis Rush. 1. Eric Clapton, the 1970 Self titled album, almost a Delaney & Bonnie album because of the musicians and many songs co-written with Delaney Bramlett (Let it Rain, After Midnight, Blues Power, Lonesome and a Long Way from Home) 2. Blind Faith, (Steve Winwood being his co-star this time) 3. Delaney & Bonnie On Tour with Eric Clapton 4. Layla (this time Duane Allman challenges him, would be #1 if it were not a double album - much of it has a session feeling to it which is nice but not for 4 LP sides) 5. Backless (You had Slowhand which has the same band and concept, I find Backless has the stronger song list, but you can swap those albums as well) 6. 461 Ocean Boulevard, this time he is confident enough to need no co-star 7. Another Ticket, (Gary Brooker of Procol Harum and the legendary Albert Lee on this) 8. Journeyman 9. No Reason to Cry 10. Cream - Disraeli Gears

No Reason To Cry and Backless are wonderful records.....as is Delany & Bonnie - can't really argue with your choices! A great list.

"Play the Blues: Live from Jazz at Lincoln Center" from 2011 is a live-album with Eric Clapton and Wynton Marsalis. A album people should give a chance. It is sort of an oddball album but a very well executed one. Highly recommended! Nerd-fact: The band Thin Lizzy got it from the news-paper Eric Clapton is reading on the Beano-album in which there is a character called "Tin Lizzy".

Yes I have that Lincoln Centre album, it's an odd one..I find Clapton's pentatonic playing a bit out of sorts with more experienced jazz players, but it's still very listenable. I think there a few bands who got their name from the Beano comic books...! :-)

I'm a big Clapton fan. Well said, I agree on the choice, though maybe in a different order. And thanks for reminding about that recent live at MSG that I've never listened to, shame on me!

"Pilgrim" should be among his very best. A delicate collection of great songs.

Which album would you recommend to get into Eric Clapton for the first time? Layla, 461 ocean blvd or just one night?

It depends if you like his mellower stuff (unplugged and 461) his classic rock stuff (Cream's Disraeli Gears) or his bluesy strung out emotional stuff (Layla)....all of them are great, and show a slightly different idea to him. Enjoy!

@@rockrecordsreviewed1880 an AMAZING career with so much great music, unlike some, I love those mid-'70's solo records and they hold up really well and better than lets say, Behind the Sun (which I LOVED when it came out). Spot on about Journeyman being the beginning of the comeback, here in America it might've started a year or two earlier with his reworking of "After Midnight"- for a beer commercial, -that became a huge deal and garnered significant radio play circa '86/'87.

I thought after Layla in 1970 he became overrated. From the cradle was great but even then Peter Green was the better blues player
