Danny Flowers is from little Henderson, NC. Met his dad in 1984 at his funeral home, sadly, to bury my wife's 18 yr old brother who had been killed in a car wreck Dec 28, 1984. Mr. Flowers mentioned (I can't remember why) that his son had written Tulsa Time. I leaned over to my friend and said "Clapton covered that song". Mr. Flowers heard me and said "Yeah, Eric was over at the house not too long ago." What a shock ! At a funeral home in a hick town in North Carolina.

Nowadays Eric is a great guy. I'm reading his autobiography and you wouldn't think this nice old man, rock and roll legend would have done some things that he's done. Earlier in his life he would have been a real bastard but now that he's clean, what a man!
@evanguy17 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Hell, Clapton played all the guitar parts for "Bell Bottom Blues," "I Looked Away" and "Keep On Growing" (before Duane joined in on recording). Except on maybe the "Layla" solo, he didn't do anything Clapton couldn't have done himself.

Blackie was his primary, Brownie was his backup, and he used a Gibson Explorer every now and then in the 70's. If that isn't Brownie it sure as hell looks like it (notice the wear on the neck).

I read in 1978 that Eric Clapton was a fan of Don Williams. Don Williams' version of this song came out in 1979. Clapton might have heard "Tulsa Time" on the radio, called Don up, and asked him, "Can I do this song?" I think I prefer Don Williams' version of "Tulsa Time" as well.
@LRGDuran15 жыл бұрын
it's a 70's start with bold lettering fender started using the large head stock in 1965 an I looked into it some more and found out that he used this guitar as you see to play slide in live concerts when he recored he used a resonator guitar or his es 335 to play slide
@guitarbob6316 жыл бұрын
I have not seen EC live since '83 and just on TV. Has he given the slide up altogether. He had his own style but I never see or him play it anymore.

Clapton mostly played lead, Duane mostly played rhythm. I love both guitarists, but you cant dispute facts. Duane was the main reason for the success of Layla, but people seem to demean Clapton while putting Duane on a pedestal. Clapton played most of the leads and Duane played the individual leads on "It's too late" and "Layla". Duane mainly uses his slide work to set up Clapton's solos.

Actually Don Williams introduced this song to EC. Don was touring Oklahoma and they got snowed in in Tulsa. While they were there, Danny Flowers, DW's lead guitar player wrote this song. Then EC called DW if he could open a show for him in Nashville, and Don played Tulsa Time for Eric. Eric found this a great song. Then it became sort of a race who of the 2 would release it first. It became a #1 hit for Don, I haven't figured out for Eric. Also #1?. Eric's version is good, but I prefer Don's.

Yeah your right. In all the concerts I've seen of him I've never seen him play that one, even when he played with the domino's the sunburst was not large headstock. Most his early strats he used during the 70's were from the mid to late 50's and Blackie I believe was make from parts of other guitars.

He basically used three electric guitars in the 70's-- Blackie (primary), Brownie (backup), and a Gibson Explorer. I don't think I've seen him with anything but those from 1970 until like 1985.
@gustav487110 жыл бұрын
CooManTunes Clapton was born in 1945, this live version of Tulsa Time is from a concert in 1979. That means that Clapton was 34 in this recording, not 16. Still, Clapton is a beast at any age.
@CooManTunes10 жыл бұрын
Are you sure? I could've sworn he was only 18 here.
@gustav487110 жыл бұрын
Yup, Tulsa Time is from the Backless album which was released in 1979. This video is either from 78' or 79, making Clapton around 33-34 in the video. If you want to see Clapton when he was 18 look up some videos of him when he was in the Yardbirds which he joined in 1963.
@CooManTunes10 жыл бұрын
***** I was only kidding around. It's pretty evident that Clapton was in his 30's here, and very fucked up at the same time. Thanks though!

CooManTunes not evident or very fucked up... couldn't do this on my best day.
@CooManTunes9 жыл бұрын
jmack619 Yes, evident, and yes, very fucked up. He was on something everyday from his time with Cream to his sons tragic death. Everybody got fucked up on something or other in those days....it doesn't mean they couldn't still display their huge talent. Substance abuse actually increased the quality of music for many, especially when it came to live performances. It would make them far more animated.

He's so good in this song. Especially being only 16 at the same. IncredibLE.
@starqz517614 жыл бұрын
I'm not judging the quality of Clapton's performance solely on whether or not he played Tulsa Time when he came here. Its more of the fact that he barely talked to us or acknowledged us as an audience and just played through his hits and then walked off the stage. ONE song for his freakin encore, ONE song? He should grab a clue from Roger Daltry who opened for him. THAT is how you entertain a crowd when you come to town!

Shakey, wow I didn't know that was recorded in Japan. Very few music groups can do as good if not better with a live recording. But I think Clapton is one of those guys. Actually, now that I think about it, it seems like most of the ones that come to mind with me that are better on a live album vs. studio album are the guitar greats. Clapton, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Almonds and George Thorogood all seemed to be as good if not better in live recordings, to name a few.
