The game is so different.. the men back then were tough as nails to deal with hits that today get you ejected… I prefer the old days..Awesome interview..Thanks Eric!!

The game is VERY different. The rules changes helps the offense: defenders can only hit receivers in the first 5 yds, QB's can simply throw the ball away without penalty as long as they are outside of the "tackle box", receivers cannot be hit if they are "defenselessly" looking for the ball and unable to protect themselves from the defender, pass rushers can only hit the QB after he throws the ball if it happens from only 1 step away from the QB. All of these changes enable the offense a TON and are what has turned the game into the passing affair that it is today.

Awesome interview. He provided great anecdotes and terrfic insights. Kudos to him for the work he is doing with regards to depression. Sad that he lost his son, but he is trying to turn tragedy into some good. Much respect for him.

"Wilber Marshall by far." Indeed.

The 1986 Bears were statistically better on defense than the 1985 team. The 1986 team lacked offense and ran into the Skins with Flutie Flakes. 1987 Green turned out the lights.

Why couldn’t the Bears replicate their defensive dominance of 1985??? Did he actually just imply that offensives figured out the Bears after 1985??? 1984 - Bears had #1 Defense in NFL 1985 - Bears had #1 Defense in NFL 1986 - Bears had #1 Defense in NFL 1987 - Bears had #2 Defense in NFL 1988 - Bears had #2 Defense in NFL It was the Offense that was the problem with McMahon being injured. Defense dominated for 5 YEARS!!!!

Wilbur Marshall sprinting and using his helmet as a weapon used to scare me when I watched on television. I'm surprised that no quarterback got killed by that guy.

Man, what an amazing team that was. It truly was one of the greatest teams the NFL has ever seen. People give credit to Ditka, however, Buddy Ryan was the true architect of that team.

Both of these guys were great football players who understood the game and had skills to cause fumbles, intercept passes and run with the ball in addition to their tackling ability. Also, both Florida Gators.

Yep.. Fencik was the brains of the beast and not typically the play caller.. Now it’s the linebacker most of the time..I hope the Bears draft Jack Campbell to be the Fencik of today..

The 85 bears couldn't replicate the 85 season success because the 3 dominant NFC powers the 49ers ,Washington ,and Giants were either retooling their rosters "49ers Washington " or obtaining the psychological makeup to become a SB champion "Giants " which left a void in 85 that created a chasm that could be occupied by the bears .Once the 3 dominant nfc superpowers were equipped properly they all won multiple SB titles ,all defeating the Ditka coached bears in post season . In life sometimes a rare opening creates opportunity for achievement in which under normal circumstances wouldn't be available ,and the 85 bears succeeded at maximizing the moment adequately . The eventual supperior coached nfc superpowers inevitably either reclaimed " 49ers Washington " or claimed "Giants" their crown once fully stable ,thus erradicating any opportunity for the bears to duplicate another nfc championship victory . The bears lethargic offense " essentially all Walter Payton or nothing " didn't possess the primary ingredients to assists the bears great defense against the 3 nfc superpowers ,leading to continous playoff failures against those opponents , consecutive loses to Washington ,a home NFC championship game blowout loss to the 49ers ,and a playoff loss to the Giants . The bears would lose outstanding personnel on defense as well as the great defensive coordinator ,yet they still maintained a excellent defensive nucleus that allowed them to be a playoff participant throughout the late 8O's till 1990 ,all organizations lose excellent talent but replenish through the draft and properly nurture existening backups to become productive starters .The bears appeared to accomplish that deed ,their pronounced problem overall was that the 3 other nfc superpowers were simply better with exception of that 1 incredible season . No stellar wr's , inconsistent QB play to outright bad production at that position by a multitude of members , a defense that despite it's elite ability had severe problems with quick passing offense who utilized the RB inthe passing game and you get the narrative for a 1 year only SB team . Arguably the greatest 3 year defensive run in NFL history from 84,85,86, arguably the greatest season, most dominant year 85 in NFL history ,,,,,,,,,but also in terms of complete team, elite production the most overrated SB team in NFL history .With Walter Payton being the vast portion of the bears offensive strength ,even with that awesome defense ,what SB Championship team would that bears had defeated ?? Maybe the 70 colts ,but they had a monster defense to counter Payton who actually only avg 2.8 yds per carry in all of the 85 post season ,and that colts team had the hof great John Mackey at te, probowl Roy Jefferson wr Hof John Unitas and former league MVP Earl Morral tossing the ball ,Tom matte a 100 yd rushers in SB 3 . Pittsburgh in 74 ? But they had a young hof wr core in Swann , Stallworth ,Preston Pearson to throw to out of the back field ,Hof RB Francisco Harris ,Hof QB Bradshaw and that incredible steel curtain defense . My point being those teams were more rounded then the bears . Nevertheless the 85 bears were a historically dominant SB champion ,who in terms of pure single season excellence dosent have to merely concede anything to any team in NFL history ,that's their legacy .

Great interview. Seems like a good guy. What he said about Barry Sanders is what I’ve been saying for 30 years almost verbatim. I love Barry Sanders but if I was an Offensive Coordinator he would drive me nuts. Give me Walter Payton and constantly moving those chains. Rarely negative yards.
