What a character, what a mind! Smoked like a chimney, worked a hard physical job and wrote some of the most insightful analysis of the human condition ever. He lived to 85!

A true working class her. In the halls of college I see a bunch of people walking around with their noses in the air acting as if they are the intellectual elite "the chosen ones". Then you get in a class with them and 70 percent are only capable of regurgitating thinks they have heard before. They sicken me with their conformity of thought. I may be incredibly dumb or incredibly smart but my thoughts are genuinely mine.

Having grown accustomed to the cool, rational style of his prose, it's surprising and delightful to see him as he was in "real life" here -- a true ecstatic in every way. The world could use a whole lot of this wonderful guy's sensibility right now.

Especially a decade later - during a global pandemic ripe with fear, rioting, vaccines, and mandates - when a majority of people will comment/post as if they are all-knowing, yet unable to admit their own ignorance, or that of the people who share their political or ideological agenda. We are divided with few rational, empathetic thinkers like this impressive, yet humble man. Conquest of the people is on the horizon, unless we can remember our shared humanity as Hoffer is able to do here and in his daily life.

I have followed Hoffer since I was in college, I’m 64 now; My curiosity has always been with his insight along with his “commonality” but it recently came to me?! It’s his passion for life for people for understanding from the dissection of a sentence to the power of the mind

The True Believer by Eric Hoffer. "In the book of Job satain did rightly say that 'a man would give all he has for his life' but what he failed to say was the a man would give his life for what he does not have". I not only read this book twice I took my time mulling it over at a snails pace, consuming it. I thought it was his only book some kind of a fluke, but now I see I have more joy ahead of me. What a mind.

If I recall rightly, Tom Bethell, in his book "Longshoreman Philosopher", opined that Hoffer's strong German accent points to his not having grown up in New York but to having immigrated to the USA after childhood. All we know about Hoffer's life before 1940 is what Hoffer saw fit to reveal about it. He has not been found in any US Census before 1940.

Im a conservative who ADORES Hoffer, but would never claim him as a conservative. He was TRULY unique. He critiques both views. He denounces the leftist ideal of intellectualism and the rightist ideal of the upper class. He BELIEVED with every ounce of his being, in the working man, and in America. Thats why we can both claim him as our own! Thats what makes him so wonderful.

Mr. Hoffer's wise and precious words are wasted on you then. What is wrong with you....."too late now." Apathetic and submissive, that's not an American citizen, YOU are becoming the real problem. Someone has to tell you. Why can't you get out there and be a great example of a good and decent American. Prove the point by example. Do things in you community, protect your children from leftist teachers. Regards.

If you could only find the interview they did outside in Golden Gate Park where Severeid asks, "What is the difference between Nazi and Communist?" Eric Hoffer replied, "Red and Black! The Communists choose Red then Black, The Nazis - Black then Red. Other then that they are the same." My understanding is that those video tapes were removed from the CBS archives and reused to record the 'Dating Game' in the early 70's just before the revolution in recording technology made those old tape systems obsolete. Such a crime against humanity.
