Moral of the story: write a relatively simple chord progression and add these extensions. See where it goes from there with the extra notes.

I believe it's the opposite of what you've said. But it's the same anyway. Here's my experience: I did study some jazz theory, but it does not matter how many articles or books I read, I still couldn't sound right. After all that time, I was getting tired and finally decided not to care about it at all and just play what I defined as jazz vocabulary myself. And it works good though I have not much idea what I was playing. I think those theory help understand the material behind the music, but music itself should come out from our mind without any interference. When looking back, we could apply things wrriten in book to refine our playing, but not more than that.

One of the greatest guitar players in history tells us all "I just move my fingers around" ... well no kidding, the problem is most of us can't move our fingers around like Eric Johnson can. The simplicity of genius level talent is memorizing.

Damnit, if the master says to move my fingers around then I'm going to take it to heart and just start moving my fingers around more and see what happens. It will have to be a leap of faith because lord knows I've been moving my fingers plenty and never produced a sound like Eric Johnson.

Wish I could just sit with you and just jam learn by actually playing I find it hard to pick up things without slowly watching and then doing. I don't know if that makes sense but it seems that I pick up things better by being with a person picking their brain. Lol You intrigue me ,Alex lifeson is another one that just hit that spot of how I want to play. I play by ear know my scales but it's that melodic way of playing that sounds so sweet you blow me away by your way of playing and the sound with that hint of delay and echo just blends in notes so forgivingly.

Tommy Leverett Not your fault, as much as I love EJ, this is not a very clear explanation of Chord Theory. Learning intervals is foundational. Look up Intervals, then look up Chord Theory and that should help to clarify things a bit. This video is like Jeff Bezos saying “Making money is easy” and then showing a phone booth with money flying around.

Honestly his new Virginia Signature start is very close to his original '54 in feel and sound, I know cause I talked to him about it in person recently. As for his rig, his last tour before this most recent one (before it was canceled) had his entire original Ah Via Musicom Rig from his original FX rg, Twin Reverb/Dual Showman Heads, & his Marshall Lead 50 and 100. the only main thing that was different was the addition of a Two Rock Traditional Clean to for his Rhythm Drive tones. But honestly regardless or what guitar or amp Eric uses he still sounds like "EJ" no matter what. Heck, a year ago I saw him play a tune using a killer '76 Gibson Explorer that he had picked up on the road during the AVM tour, and it was a sight to see/hear!
@sunburststrats
@sunburststrats 4 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewAmado I'm not going to argue with you because I'm really tired of it. yes he has a 54' but his main guitar was a 56' or 57' (alder) for a very long time. I know because I've played it. I did sound for Eric years ago. I've played his rig and his guitar and I've played all his fender signature models since they've come out....yes and the new one.... and I've played truck loads of pre CBS strats...I mean look at my account name...I've been working in music stores for 20 years. I know what an old strat sounds like believe me...these sound pretty good..but don't hold a candle. But go ahead and buy all the new fenders and leave the old ones to me ...I would love that. a killer 70's Gibson lol ... yeah you know what your talking about... keep walking kid and leave me alone. 99% of 70's Gibson guitars are boat anchor waffle dung piles. I will agree that Eric will always sound like Eric even if he played a Squire strat...but thats not the friggin point. SMH
