I met EJ after a show on the Ah Via Musicom tour. I told him I’d never had a lesson, but was fascinated by his chordal approach. He explained exactly this, just learning the major scale all over the neck and mixing up any and all notes from it. 30 years later, and it’s still how I approach chordal improv LOL! Thanks Eric, you are a genius!

Being aware of what intervals you're using, interchange, borrowing from parallel keys, modulation, alterations, etc are going to be a lot more sensible with a full knowledge of note choice. Modes are just patterns and are 1 pixel in the whole landscape of theory.

When he's moving around, listen to the lower voice, listen to how he moves the bass line. That's the key to making it all flow together cohesively.

Yea, it is this counterpoint-like voicings. Melody and bass each go independend directions. Think you need to have two brains for improvising like this. Joe Pass did it. And Bach.

If you listened to everything that Eric says all the way up to 02:22 , stopped there with that clear assignment and went off and learned every note on each string.. you would be far better than those that never did and who are still living inside of that "box". ric I’ve performed and taught guitar since I was a teenager. I’m 55 now. Started guitar after hearing the Hendrix Monterey recording. For whatever reason, many (most?) guitarists skip learning the most basic thing of all: knowing the notes on your instrument. As anyone who took band, strings, or piano in school can tell you, the very first thing you learn on any other instrument is what the notes are for any given fingering. I guess a big reason is because of the dumb-dumb dots on the guitar's fretboard. You can get dot overlays for fretless instruments like the violin, but these are for absolute beginners and are only meant to be used for a short while; using them at all is usually discouraged. Fretboard markings allow guitarists to skate by using only positions, shapes, and patterns.
