Sounds great. You've got the gear dialed in well, but the most important part is how you evoke that EJ sound through your playing. Phrasing and technique are critical for this stuff, and you nailed it. That alone got you most of the way there; having well-selected gear and dialing it in right is just the clincher. Well done, sir.

There's an MXR compression pedal in the chain too, sometimes ... Also, the specific transistors used for a particular version of the FuzzFace can have a significant effect on the tone that's produced; you'll probably want one with germanium transistors if seeking that Eric Johnson lead tone.

@@mexistratman1 no, sincerely. I'm recovering from shoulder surgery and using the time to rethink my approach to tone. I'm going with a wet/dry/wet setup and this inspired me to play with two delays and use a gain stack that I can build up in stages.

Thanks for posting this, appreciate it and sounds good. Which of the moon settings do you have the Giggity in? You should consider getting either a Hermida Dover Drive (check out Mowat-Smith's YT demo of it), MXR FET Driver (less expensive), or an actual Butler tube driver for your EJ tube driver lead sounds and run that into the Giggity, perhaps. Then the fuzz can be the dirty rhythm or an alternate lead sound. Cheers, and keep up the good work.
@mexistratman19 жыл бұрын
No problem at all I'm glad you liked the video :) I think the moon setting was at its very darkest for this but one closer to the sun still sounds pretty good, the trick is to keep the master volume on the giggity down :) Thanks for the comment!

I dont have the same delay pedal but how do you set the delay to 420 ms? Ive heard thats around what Eric uses
@vintagepipesnightmares3 жыл бұрын
If you really want that Eric fuzzy tone you should put the tube screamer before the fuzz. Like he does. You will immediately hear that weird fuzzy tone. And the delay before distortion.
@mexistratman13 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip Silviu, I was never able to make the delay before distortion work for me, never got it to sound good. I will try the tube screamer before the fuzz, I didn’t think of that.
@vintagepipesnightmares3 жыл бұрын
@@mexistratman1 your welcome ! That is the secret of that weird fuzz tone. Tube screamer into fuzz face. But the level of fuzz should be about half. And the tube screamer more level less gain. It will give you that buzzy fuzz. But play with them you will get there

Awesome and informative! Two delay pedals, never thought of that. What are the settings on each delay pedal?
@kaiutube2 жыл бұрын
One is a very short single delay and the other delay (in this case DD-3) is a longer delay that will also delay the delay of the shorter delay so its delaying delay and adding more delay. DELAY

In first place, congrats for your amazing tone. Im a EJ lover and you illuminated me! What amp are using? Im a JCM800 Owner, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier and Blackstar HT Soloist. I don't know if with these amps, the tubescreamer, the fuzz face and a tc electronic flashbakc delay x4 (with my american strat) is enought to get close to this tone. What do you think? Any advice? Thank you for your time!
@mexistratman18 жыл бұрын
Hi Andoni thank you for watching! Firstly I have to say I don't have much experience with other equipment but I'll try my best to give you advice. For the lead tone I'd pick whichever amp has an FX loop, dial the amp so that it is very slightly distorted, put the fuzz and tube screamer in the order I have them here. Set the tube screamer quite low in level and half way in gain. Put your flashback in the FX loop and mess with the settings to get something you like. Turning the fuzz on should give you the lead sound, turning it off should give you the crunch rhythm. Reverb is also very important but I assume your amps have that built in (set it high!) I hope that helps you in some way :)

Great job!! At first, when I saw that the blue fuzz face with the fuzz knob fully clock-wise I thought, "this is gonna be an absolute shit-fight when he switches THAT on!" But it sounds pretty damn cool. Any comment on that please? Perhaps the winding back of treble AND volume of guitar when using fuzz face . . ?
@mexistratman13 жыл бұрын
Haha! I know what you mean.. two things on that. First, as long as the volume of the fuzz is less than about 1 O’Clock I don’t find it too bad. Secondly, and most importantly, run it through other pedals to take the harshness away, in this case TS9 and Giggity. Volume on the guitar is all the way up but treble is wound back slightly. Hope that helps!
@walthompson82103 жыл бұрын
@@mexistratman1 - Thanks Conor. Yes the order of the pedals in the chain would be really helpful. Presumably the first thing the guitar "sees" is the FF, then TS (I see the the tone is nearly fully ACW on the TS. Refresh my memory pls. Is that tone nearly off or nearly full on?) then Giggity. Choruses and delays later than that then into amp. Is that a 4 x 10" Fender Bassman? The other thing that would be handy are where all the knobs (on the pedals) are set but I guess one can see most of these in your video as is . . ?

good day sir. i just bought a Giggity because of your video :) can i just ask if your giggity pre amp setting is turned into moon or 2nd from the moon. thanks a lot. im having a hard time getting the tone.
@mexistratman18 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for your comment, I usually have mine set at the second from the darkest moon, it's also important to turn the loudness (gain) up but keep the volume of the pedal at 9 o'clock or around there. Sometimes I even use the second sun setting and turn the air way down, that works too. Make sure you are running some heavy enough distortion or fuzz into the pedal or have a distorted amp because the pedal alone cannot make the tones. I hope that helps you and congrats on your new pedal! I think you'll love it once you get used to it :)
@micahreyes43578 жыл бұрын
+Conor Sullivan wow. that helped a lot. im kinda catching up, but still working on it.. may i ask again, is the chain supposed to be Guitar > Fuzz > Dist > Giggty ? Thank you so much kind sir.

@kalebyoung44436 жыл бұрын
80% is his hands. You have that backward
@kellydonnelly78283 жыл бұрын
Actually EJ doesn't use Deluxes most of the time unless he needs a quiter amp. They don't have the headroom. Usually Twins or other various Fender Amps. Lately 2 Rocks for dirty rhythm and early Marshalls for lead. 90% of Eric's tone is in his hands. This I know well. I've been his studio engineer since 2008 here at Saucer in Austin TX. Echoplexes and the CB Epoch in heavy use among other things. Memory Man when what it does is needed. I usually don't pay attention to his boards all that much. It really doesn't matter what he uses. I concern myself with what is coming out of the amp. 😎
