Same here. It was in the late 90s when I think he might have been touring for Venus Isle. The only problem was that he had 2 opening acts. It was some violinist as another band as well. That was too much. Give me 1 opener if any. Eric was good, though, and I was up front real close.

I was so blessed to see him in the little clubs, where all the guitar players would be in the audience, like me, looking at each other, smiling and shaking our heads. By far rhe most influencial artist for me. Ill bever forget those nights .

I remember hearing Eric Johnson on a Hot Licks Total Electric Guitar video and it was just on another level the tone and chord voicings I was hooked on his style ever since
@Scorchinscotty8 ай бұрын
Some of the most beautiful things-chordally, and tone-wise-that he’s ever played, are on that video @johncoster1975! I watched it so many times that I can replay some of it in my mind-especially the intro improvisation. Just heavenly sounding tones… 🤯

Yeah that was nice to hear you two just talking about those ‘aha’ moments. I’ve followed Eric over the years and been able to attend several of his performances. From small venues to large. Indoors and out. Some of the smaller venues I was able to stand so close to him while he was playing I could have almost reached out and touched him. That is right before security would have pinned me down. Ha. Wow Rick, you have interviewed a lot of guitarists. Any chance you could some how manage to get Hendrix and/or SRV? Nah. Oh well…. Sigh!

George Lynch has a similar sound with the way he recorded his guitar parts back in the '80's. He trimmed off a lot of treble high end and brought up the mid's to make his sound more appealing.

I was in Rockin a Robin Guitars in Houston when they were on University Blvd, (this was before they moved to S. shepherd Dr.) one day in the late 70s, Bart showed me a heavily played 68 gold top LP that had black coil humbuckers, the top was covered with weather checking and the fingerboard looked like it had been heavily oiled. Bart said it had belonged to Eric Johnson. I passed on it and bought a near mint 68 a gold top, I’m kickin myself ever since. Eric said in an interview later that he wished he still had the LP. Sometime later I saw Eric Johnson when he opened for Stevie Ray Vaughan at the Music Hall in Houston, this was on SRVs tour he did right after Texas Flood came out. Eric Johnson was unbelievable and I felt bad for SRV, although SRV was just awesome too, but he was in a league all his own and totally different from Eric, but Eric showed his stuff to the max. 🇺🇸🎸👮🏻♂️

I don't know if I can really respect his opinions anymore, seeing as he's fallen to only 205 on Rolling Stones Greatest Guitarist List wheras Joan Jett is I think 76th - so she must be a lot better... maybe you should interview her, Rick. , , This is sarcasm, folks - Eric is a huge hero to me and has been for decades.

I always thought his tone got mislabeled as a "violin” tone. To me it’s a more rounded cello sound. Violins can get trebly and screechy at times. His sound is always rounded and mello…like a cello lol

Didn't Eric use a single amp set-up with the Electromagnets? A Mesa Boogie?? You need to come back to the UK, Eric. The quality of the 240V, 60 Hz supply is second to none.
