@@bobbyshroyer440 Oh! I always assumed that Eric had given the guitar that name because sassafras trees are closely associated with the state of Virginia. Thanks for the correction!

@@kmichaelp4508 Well Eric’s original Stratocaster that had that gorgeous tone was a 1954 model, and in that year the production inspectors of the guitars would sign their name and the date on a little piece of paper and put it in the guitar. Eric stumbled upon this piece of paper when he was changing a pick guard on the original guitar and he pulled off the pickguard and found the piece of tape, and it said “Virginia, June 1954. Unfortunately the guitar itself is a bit of a sad story. Eric Johnson is obviously known for having one of the best guitar tones ever, as the strat had a 500k volume pot, sassafras wood and all sorts of little accoutrements that made it an incredibly special guitar. To the naked eye it would have looked like just any old Stratocaster, but it was a one of a kind instrument. Eric spent a long time studying how to get the level best sound out of the guitar, and so came the songs of “Ah Via Musicom”, like “Cliffs Of Dover”. Point is, the tone on this thing was just exceptional. It was a kind of sustainy, violin type sound that was very natural and haunting and soulful, but kinda cosmic as well. But after the show with Satriani, it was years before Eric would hear this tone again. At this particular show, he tripped over one of his fender amps, took a nasty fall and badly damaged the pickups on the guitar. He himself was unharmed, but the guitar took the brunt of it. He tried so hard to fix it, but he just couldn’t get the tone back, so he ended up selling it off. He kept on looking for other 54 strats to replace it and none of them worked until he discovered that the Strat Virginia was made of sassafras. Bear in mind this is a man who spent years studying every single aspect of what made guitars sound so good to achieve this tone and he didn’t hear it again for years. Only when Fender contacted him about the Stories Guitars EJ Strat did he hear anything as good as that old tone, and still, I don’t think they sound quite as good as the original. They sound fantastic and I’m not diminishing Fender’s efforts to recreate such a priceless sound as they did a great job on the guitars, but they just aren’t the same as the original Virginia. I know it was just a guitar, but I still think it’s a really sad story. If you knew all this stuff about Eric, I apologise for droning on; I just love knowing about musicians’ connections with their instruments.
