Many of the Aussie cars I grew up with would confuse just about anyone. They didn't have 4-way hazard lights at all. And no clear/white reverse lights either - instead, both rear turn signals (always amber lenses in Oz) would turn on solid, not flashing. But not the front turn signals (which were sometimes amber, sometimes, white), so they must have been wired completely separately. There's weird stuff everywhere if you look hard enough.

Of course it never occurred to check the handbook especially as one side is a clear reversing light and the other is a red lens, it must be there for a purpose? I'm in UK and this type of lamp configuration is common but I have changed all my cars with this configuration to have two red fog lights and two white reversing lights, possible by mixing RHD and LHD components. It means one or other of the systems has to have auxiliary lamps below the rear bumper, but that is no hardship especially as the positives outweigh the negatives. This means that I can use a LHD or RHD car in other countries safely and besides two lights are better than one, whatever the use.

Great vlog as always, I spent 47 years in the motor trade in the UK, so as soon as I saw the rear lamp in the video, I worked out immediately. Europe, which the UK was a member of , required vehicles after a certain age, to have a rear fog (high intensity rear) lamp on the centre or drivers side as a minimum, some cars had them on both sides, but, some manufacturers (for the sake of aesthetics) fit a white lens on both sides, with a red bulb in the drivers side for the rear fog lamp. I worked at a Austin/Morris/Rover dealership for a number of years and found one of the cost cutting tricks that the manufacturers used was to sell a lamp complete with bulb holders, which when fitted did not work, because it was devoid of bulbs!, caught many people out including dealership fitters. Keep up the brilliant content.

I work on buses in the UK, and it's not uncommon for bus & coach manufacturers to borrow lights from cars or vans. For example, there's a Berkhof coach which uses FIAT Tipo rear lights (as in the 1990s Tipo). A coach from Irisbus used BMW E46 headlights. An example I worked with was the Wright Solar body on the Scania L94 chassis, when they first came out in 2000 they had Peugeot Boxer tail lights. You needed to be careful when swapping a tail light unit on those, because they came supplied with 12 volt bulbs that would be used on the Peugeot Boxer, but the bus systems run at 24 volts, so you needed to swap the bulbs.

Thank you Eric! I have been watching you for years. Your videos, your efforts making all of them, have always been much appreciated and always cheer me up…especially when I have some tough days! Thank you buddy 👏

17:24 WOW those Germans are freaking smart man, look how these connectors come apart, I'm gonna turn into a euro shop at the end of this. I laughed my heart out 😂😂😂 What the frig! It's lit up red 😂 Easily the most funny and hilarious video you've ever made hands down. I just love it ❤

i was practically screaming at my computer screen, the moment you showed the rear lights off at the beginning of the video, i saw the passenger side had a clear lens and the drivers side had a red lens - meaning it could not be the reverse light. mistakes happen to the best of us though, keep on keepin' on.

Takes a big man to show a mistake and take ownership. Good job, experience and mistakes are the best teachers. We always remember when we mess up, just the part of life that teaches very good lessons. Keep up the great work!!! Very good video!!!!

I saw the difference in those lenses way back at the beginning of the video when he did the 10-second test but I thought... no way could I be right and Eric wrong, no way.
@blueboats7530 Жыл бұрын
I noticed it too, but I got caught in an endless loop of "why would the lens look different?"
@richardguse3410 Жыл бұрын
Exactly my thinking. However, I've had a rear fog light on my Volvos forever. Poor Eric kept saying no backup light while looking at a red lens on the driver's side.

Me too but I thought it was camera angles

Eric great job. Nice troubleshooting. You found that there was no reverse in the light.

Lol.. Enjoyed this a lot as all the others. I once heard that good judgment come from experience but experience comes from bad judgment. This is the finest of evolution in the making. Take care Eric...

I’ve said this countless times Eric. You’d be the ONLY Mechanic/Electrician I’d EVER let touch any of my vehicles, if I lived up there.

That's not a mistake, it's a learning lesson for the majority of us that watch this channel. I have never heard of one reverse light, outside of my truck because I'm too lazy to change the bulb.
@johnhpalmer6098 Жыл бұрын
Not too uncommon for European makes to do this. I've known of this of this for a while myself. It comes from seeing videos from across the pond from time to time.
@robertgad3269 Жыл бұрын
Unless I'm missing something (always possible), having only one reverse light doesn't strike me as strange as having no reverse fog light function on the dash switch but actually having installed a working bulb in the (never to be used) reverse fog light socket.
@tonychalmers9867 Жыл бұрын
It's also not uncommon to have the bulbs fitted but no wire to the connector. Many, non-North American, cars are build to accommodate both left and right hand drive so a standard harness is built. This is just a cost saving as it means they don't have to make a different harness for different markets. The rear fog has to be fitted to the driver's side if only one is fitted and the opposite for the reverse lamp. North American cars don't require a rear fog but Europe does.
@Sean006 Жыл бұрын
@@tonychalmers9867 the wiring to the rear fog light was there. Question is should the car have a working rear fog light....and if 'Yes' did Eric do anything to the car to stop it working? Eric probably needs to find out the answer and get the car back if he thinks there is a problem with the rear fog light.

Hi Eric! Dang! I've been a subscriber/watcher for 2 yrs now and really enjoy and learn alot from your videos! I'm an old school fart "brought up in the old, educated in the new" guy. But i was really pissed off this morning as i found your channel removed from my list and it appears i was never subscribed. Ahh, f YT but i still want to watch and learn something new every day! I hope you, Mrs O and family are doing well. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your content....cause YT sure ain't payin your bills but they love charging you for the service while bombarding the playbacks with advertisers! God bless! Dave Lewis and family, SW MI❤

These videos are the best of yours because it shows that when one of the arguably most experienced mechanics, especially when it comes to diagnostics, on the internet is struggling to figure out something like that, you know its an absolutely stupid design. Euro cars come up with the dumbest designs on stuff for no reason. You show your effort to try to provide the customer with the best service, even if it leads to a massive dead end like that. The guy who can do it cheaper would have just jiggle the connector until it somewhat worked and sent it, wouldnt have cleaned it or greased it or tried to find why the light wasnt going.

Hey Eric no big deal.... didn't take you that long to figure it out !!! 👍🏼 As an old aircraft tech who used to troubleshoot a lot, I enjoy your videos ! Now I'm working on my cars and using your tips all the time!

Great video Mr. O. nothing to be ashamed of, and it proves your troubleshooting skills are excellent tracing the wires and reading the schematics. Plus the scantool also wasnt reporting correctly and it was showing right and left reverse lights. Strange that a north america spec car would have the fog light lens.
@Sloposse Жыл бұрын
You can also buy a right hand drive left side rear cluster (which will have the reverse light instead of fog) and wire the reverse light to the other one with a seperate fuse

Loads of cars in the UK and with that Europe these days only have one reverse light, for some unknown reason. Probably has something to do with saving the planet one bulb at a time lol. Great diagnostics as always Eric. Keep em coming :)

You have nothing to be embarrassed about. You’re not a euro guy, but you learned something about those goofy Germans. Sprinter vans have a rear fog light AND two reverse lights. I never woulda guessed it either. Can’t believe I missed this one, thanks for posting it anyway!! Blessings to you and Mrs. O!!
