The other day I was playing a gig with a projector which was far too far away from the target, so I had to project huge black borders to keep the image on the screen. But during the show I got bored with that and opened up the borders to let the visuals spill out on to the walls. I was way up on a balcony but I think that people cheered. I'm claiming as a win.

Advanced output is cool, but design, technique, approach, and philosophy are cooler. I think we’ve spoken about similar things as well. Exploring ways to share that information

Excellent breakdown man! One other thing I think of is focal length. Using a wider lens can make something feel far away so when it pushes up close to the camera it feels more 'in your face'.

Yes the blowthrough LED is a major piece, but designing for it is what makes it great. Just any random content wouldn't hit the same just because its on this screen. And you could achieve similar visual effects on other screens too

Thanks Sean, this type of content is exactly what I need right now. I'm just starting out and have no background in art or design (I'm an IT tech). Your explanations of why these effects work is really helpful to me. I'd love to see more content like this but not just for high budget shows. I'll be playing underground (free) parties. I'd be really interested to know what you think works best in smaller venues where people are there primarily to dance and engage with eachother rather than watch a show?

Thats awesome Dave, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Trying to communicate design principles in a fun way thats relevent for our industry, so glad its translating! Thats a great suggestion. Some principles apply across different types of shows, but intimate shows definitely have their own vibe, as do different styles of music. I'll have a think about it, and go ahead and try observing successful small shows to see what stands out to you as well. Off the top of my head I'd say to not be too bright, flashy, or fast if you dont want to steal too much attention. Sometimes it helps to think of your screen as a light fixture, or a physical sign or sculpture, to brainstorm more subdued effects. Video can do anything, but a physical sign might just portray an artists logo and only have some lighting on it that changes to the beat. That could be a nice effect thats much less distracting than a strobing rainbow glitch

@@SeanBowes Wow, thanks for the fast and thoughtful reply. You are right about not wanting to steal too much attention and I will keep that in mind. I like the idea of thinking of it as part of the lighting. But since this is a techno party and we already have lasers, smoke etc. I can probably afford to go a bit bright and psychedelic. Will try not to overdo it though! Have just been to the venue and we have set up two 1080 panels in a 1x2 matrix directly above the DJ area between the two main speaker stacks. Everything seems to be working ok so fingers crossed for tomorrow night 🤞

need more breakdowns like this. is there any way you could explain how they sync the visual effects to the music that’s happening? like for the ‘Repetition’ section ( 6:50 ) i can see how you could model the grid pattern in 3D and illuminate it with lighting, but how in the world do they do all that light flashing stuff to the music??

Either just animating to a standard bpm like 120 (2 flashes per second) and then speeding it up to match the bpm of the music, or they actually animate along to the music and keyframe a light flashing on specific beats. It can be tedious but music is quite repetitive by nature so its not that bad. Do some math and copy paste some stuff and youre good lol. They might also use plugins like Signal which use LFOs to animate which is great for rhythmic stuff like this.

You forgot to mention the cost, this is at least a $100k +, I am trying to set up my own LED screen set and right now my cost is $900 for a short throw projector,and that gives me a 10ft x 6 ft screen for my dj set. But man I would die to have this set up, kool stuff !!!!

A big ass expensive screen helps, but design is free and can work anywhere. Try some of these techniques out anyway and see what happens. Some of the first layered screen setups were done with projection, using a rear projected back screen and a hologauze scrim front screen.

Too bad in some shows the physical light of the diver on screen is out of position. In this video it is also to far above his head. When I saw it at Tomorrowland it was correct right on top of his head.

Yes I imagine this is a difficult production to execute at festivals. The variablility in rigs and space can really have a large effect on things like this.

I think they achieved it pretty well with this one. Great control of ambient light and brightness levels in the content are key to keeping the illusion in tact as much as possible

Could u make a video of lightning and dmx, like how to start. I want to put a smoke dmx machine, laser machine and strobe inside my room for practicing, i would love a video for the best queality/price way to start, like dmx to usb interface etc. Love your content!

Maybe someday, but I dont really do lighting or sfx. Check out Christian Jackson for some lighting / dmx info or try to find some lighting and laser / sfx operators channels
