I’m 70 years old raised in Kansas so I’m somewhat partial. Eric is a great actor. He brought back a memory/story my mother you to tell me. Evidently being a single mother she left the car running with me and my older sister in the car got out for a moment. We were living in SO cal at that time. I got in the drivers seat and put it in gear and she ran and grabbed the bumper and was dragged slowing down the street. A passerby rescued her and us and jumped in the car and stopped it. I’ve got to go check out that episode again.

Eric says something important in this that I think has gotten overlooked. Especially in earlier seasons, a lot of people thought the Cam/Mitch couple was the best couple on the show and a big reason for that was that they didn't portray the couples as "overly gay" so that even straight couples could go "I'm a Cam" or "I"m a Mitch". It "humanizes" them for those who may feel gays are "less than" so when they turn around in later seasons and do the occasional "gay issue" thing, it impacts people more because now these characters have established they are just like everyone else. That allows people who have spent years saying "I'm a Mitch" and "I'm a Cam" to think how they would feel if their parents didn't approve of them or they were looked down upon for certain things. It's a formula that worked especially well for black TV families in the 80s and 90s like the Cosbys and the Winslowsm (and yes for others before and since then but that was my main TV watching time)

I was shocked when I found out Eric wasn’t gay. And then I found out he based it on his mom. He was easily the best part of Modern Family
